Sad the translation was deactivated. Sometimes it helps non English speaking people
Thanks in advance
It also helps English speaking people, also.
I do agree with you
Agree... Nor even captions for deaf ones.
The people at DUST frequently leave the CC disabled. And they know it pisses of the viewers.
Captivating storyline and the acting is incredible. I completely forgot this was a short film.
Same here. That was a intense "short" movie. Forgot to it was a short movie and wanted much more.
I hear you
There is this video on RUclips about why short films look the way they do compared to features, and it's clear the creator of that video has not being looking at a lot of the work independent short filmmakers, especially those working specifically in genres like sf, have been producing. Just like this short, there are lots of short films being made today ( and for a while) that more than rival features when it comes to the skills exhibited in cinematagraphy, sound design, and production values.
Do you recall the content uploader? @nelsonsmith
@@Uathe The channel is MovieLUTs, and the vid is titled "Why do Short films look like that?". It's an analysis of the short film that inspired Whiplash, and the difference between it and the feature, but seems to miss the point that the creators of the short had the ability to create the look of the feature had they chosen to. Color grading for example is becoming pretty standard for even low budget filmmakers today. Also the stuff Vincent Laforet was doing in the early days of DSLR certainly looked as good as any feature -- how "professional" a project looks depends a great deal on how skilled you are, not the format you're working in.
@@NelsonStJames oh wow thank you! Now I got more film fodder for the weekend, thanks again!
Just came across your comment. Thanks man. Means a lot. After working on several other writing projects I'm finally working on the feature length version of this project. Story is a little different but I'm hoping it's going to hit home in the same way with everyone who liked the short.
Finally a good short on this channel. I was beginning to think the only films on here were 1/2 written, lazy pieces where writers could begin a film, but couldn’t figure out how to end them so they left it up to the viewer.
The utmost act of humanity: create a sentient AI just to give it SORROW, GRIEF and PAIN. This is so very probable.
Yes plan ได้
Perfectly captures the callous indifference of humanity
Thanks for that comment cos I didn't get the story at all until u said that.
Acting, images, camera, lighting, audio are excellent!
The story twist is a bit bumpy in my opinion, and overall does not make much sense to me (I.e., what benefit would a robot experiencing loss have).
Grief never leaves a person, and she has become everything that makes an AI human in that way - which is why they shut her down.
@@ksnax Well, I'm a computer scientist, and I know one or two things about making AIs, allowing this behavior to happen from the conceptual side would be pretty incompetent :-D
I think the idea was she's supposed to be a caregiver, and a caregiver who knows and understands loss and grief on a personal level can better relate to the patient and their family. Not that it's necessarily true or a good idea to do this, but I think that's the direction the therapist/developer lady was going.
Excellent acting. But we need a second part to understand everything. :)

Agreed
Certified Gold!!!!!
Uniquely original concept. Superbly done.
Okay, now that was freakin' awesome! Total package and immersion experience - from the auditory to the video to the writing and the acting. Such a unique take on such a common riff becomes harder and harder to come by - thus making a GEM like this a true piece of art. Bravo!
Why disable captions?
Tough one to watch. A mother's bond with a child can be very strong. Altering her, or anyone else's reality just doesn't seem right.
Amazing piece of work indeed, intriguing on so many levels best 18 minutes I have come across lately
Definitely one of the better ones.
Well, there's 20 minutes I won't get back.
When I think about the possibility of androids with AI, I'm not afraid of them. I'm afraid for them.
Really good, really horrific
SOOO UUUUMM Are we getting more Parallel Man or what ?????

So this was about.......what? Some sort of psyop? A story writer who's angry at someone/something? Sorry, I don't get it.

A "murderous, overprotective nanny bot".
Agreed.

@@anthrabed I would think it is the psychological course being evaluated on a robot. Can the psychologist enable the grief-stricken robot to handle her rage at the supposed murderer of her child? If not, the grief therapy course being evaluated has failed. Of course, that is quite a high bar to get over ... and it doesn't.
Story is very obvious like duh....
I think i have seen this before.

Always good content DUST! Thanks so much for good videos always.

Sorry, I didn't get it, too. The first part was ok, but the end? What happened?
Anyone?

Look at earlier comments.
Seemed like it was more about the grief, experienced by an artificial intelligence in a future where technology is advanced, but age old questions have still not yet been answered. Just a bit of science mixed with a bit of fiction.
An interesting video. Honestly could not figure it out though. Left me with a lot of questions.
I couldn't figure it out either but some of the comments have helped me get the jist of the story.
We can only hope AI will have more mercy on us than we will likely deserve.
This dude is afraid of computers 😂
What do you mean "we"?
What have you done? We all have done different things. Do you believe in collective punishment for something someone did? For a bad apple, throw away the whole basket of apples?
Nonsense homie
@@Aurinkohirvi I mean "we" in the same sense as "AI" was used in the sentence, not any particular or individual but as a class, a group, or, in our case, a species. I certainly didn't mean for you to take it personally. It's nice to know I won't be the dullest person at the party.
LMAO
this has been posted before.......do you keep recycling these?
Hard to follow, watched twice still not sure what ts really about?
My take: Scientists testing a sentient AI, how it copes with grief.
Apparently she's a murderous whack job.
@@Webfra14 Looked more like engineers (working for a corporation to create a commercial product) than like scientists (working to solve some fundamental question, no matter whether from the field of psychology or from the field of computer science) to me. There was even a company logo featured at multiple places. A scientific research project - for example hosted by a university or by a consortium of universities - would hardly invent such a logo...
Then again, maybe the distinction matters little: what research finds is usually exploited commercially as soon as that becomes profitable, and commercial application rarely gets along without having scientific foundations first.
Maybe the distinction matters in so far as much of machine learning research is already done at commercial corporations right now rather than at universities, where it would usually be easier to access for public scrutiny. That part, that machine learning research is shifting out of the public sector, isn't science fiction any longer.
Mesmerizing. Also, what a beautiful actress!
Rule #5 do not carry live weapons near A.I.
Wow. I know this f'n with people's reality goes on, but I fail to completely grasp the why. Perhaps the best answer is because they can.
@just1certifiable: Power over others is the ultimate high. Just look at individuals in government. Not to mention the monitary gain these individuals acquire.
it's a shame what a
crappy ending
Judging from our protagonist’s hairstyle and colouring, this film must have been filmed in something like 2015 or 2016?
Ahhh what a weird piece of info for my brain to have latched onto.
(p.s. love the short film. 👏)
It was. I saw it about 7 years ago.
I love DUST. I always feel like these sci-fi shorts are missing a Serling-style epilogue.
Would have liked to watch this production but with bad hearing and no captions it would have been a waste. Thanks for nothing.
That was a messed up little flick !
CC subs pls.
Well, that was cruel as hell
I’ve already seen this on Dust more than a month ago. Why is it reposted; indicating that I haven’t seen it before (no red line)??!!
Read the video description mate. Every Friday, DUST re-posts a video from their archives. “Refresh Friday” is in the title too. They got to feed the RUclips algorithm monster with a certain regularity, even with repeat content, otherwise their new film uploads on the other day(s) won’t be shown to as many viewers.
@@qzbnyv Great. Thanks for the info. 😃👍🏻
Well that was intense. I bet money within 10 years this will be a reality. Close to it anyways. 10/10.
Enjoyed it watching it again after months. Thanks!
what does this have to do with scifi?
Probably it had machines which didn't exist when it was made.
This one seems a little weird
didn't she die in that outer space movie

Like a bad penny....
Awesome twist!!
The only thing that was techno was the orb, everything else was implied.. loved that.
Then the twist that came at each turn was elegant!!
There was insufficient explanation as to what was going on. Consequently, I was left with more questions than answers. The purpose of a film is to tell a story, and this film did a very poor job doing so to the point that I just wish I hadn't wasted my time watching it. Disliked.
Kiss a lot of frogs....
Being left with more questions than answers might actually be a good thing... Do you really want everything to be spelled out for you, leaving no space for your own mind to grow into?
@@dayegilharno4988 There's a big difference between spelling everything out, and adequately telling a story. In this case, being left with more questions than answers was a bad thing because it means the film maker didn't adequately tell the story, as many of the commenters have displayed similar complaints.
@@joker102877 There's a big difference between adequately telling a story and telling the "whole" story without leaving anything to the imagination. Finding the perfect spot to end one's story is an art, and we can certainly debate wether that spot was missed with this short, but you just made an incredibly broad-stroke non-argument based on your personal needs, not on the quality of storytelling here.
I don't know if that actress has ever really felt the broken debilitating pain of true loss, but I have, and she has me convinced. Truly good acting.

A LOT OF THESE SPEND 4/5s OF THE TIME SETTING UP THE STORY ONLY TO REALISE THEY LEFT NO ROOM FOR CONTEXT OR A GOOD ENDING...
Brilliant story, fantastic cinematography, and the pacing was perfect! That actress is not only stunningly beautiful, but incredibly talented.
Thank you to all involved!
