Dear Francis Pelletier, now there is a person in Russia who loves you very much. I just found the song I've been searching for over 25 years. When I started watching the video, for some reason I knew for sure that I would hear it. It was like a sign, like some kind of miracle. And in the next second it sounded. And this is just the event of the year. I have a personal holiday today! Words of gratitude are not enough here, but thanks thanks thanks anyway!🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

I was looking forward to this one. Thanks for this Francis. 13 weeks for 'My Heart Will Go On' in first?! Wow! It is a good song and Celine sells it to her abilities. 'Perfect Day' was more of a UK type hit so not surprised it didn't do well in Germany. Perhaps that Smurf version of Barbie Girl should have been included on the upcoming film soundtrack instead of Nicki / Ice Spices terrible version? I prefer 'Amnesia' to 'Tubthumping'. The female lead singer looked like a school teacher I had at secondary school! Cleopatra.....I was crazy over those girls back then! Ahh...Guildo Horn revived interest in Eurovision for the Germans. I preferred the runner-up to him in the local heats 'Herzensshoner' (which is on here) which had an Eurthymics vibe. The year we lost Falco, but 'Out Of The Dark' is a classic. The Tamperer track is used when the players come out at the football club I support (Birmingham City). Dana International, of course she won the Eurovision and the first transsexual to win. I won't say what a relative of mine says about Loona as it's rude. That's definitely got to be expat Englishmen buying 'Three Lions'! My favourites are 'All My Life', 'Out Of The Dark', 'Viva Forever' (my #1 of 1998 and such an emotional song), and of course Madonna's singles with her big comeback. Too many to list!!
1998 is a favourite year of mine musically. So many great songs and one of the best of the 90s. Just takes me back to a time of change and many happy memories. You need a special award for your excellent uploads. Good to see what other countries are doing and what was happening in this year's. A+ grade upload as always 👍 A golden time for music.

I must say I'm only 15 minutes in but I don't know as many songs as I know from 1999. 1999 seems to be stronger than 1998. Still a lot of great songs here, I grew up with this music. Thanks for your work, I'mma make a great nostalgia playlist with my fav tracks (and I have to check a lot of tracks if I like them). ❤

Thank you Francis for another great German chart video! 1998 was probably the weakest year of the 90s on the German charts, there were just too many bad cover versions. But there were, of course, still enough great songs. The most underrated ones in my opinion: 'At the Beginning' by Richard Marx & Donna Lewis (from 'Anastasia'), 'Somebody Turns on the Light' by CB Green & 'Come to Sin' by Bananafishbones (both have great choruses, I remember the latter being played on German radio quite a lot) as well as 'Man in the Rain' by Mike Oldfield (sounds like 'Moonlight Shadow' part 2). Looking forward to 1999! 👍

Ironically 1998, both versions of Last Christmas was in the German chart, the only other irony appeared nine years later in 2007 with Cascada, whereas one original every Xmas and the other notably being a cover version, technically most of the U.K. and U.S. chart-toppers in the German chart were All Saints with two, most notably Under the Bridge and Lady Marmalade released separately and Boyzone with two chart-toppers were in the top 100 in Germany and Five having missed one out, had 3 out of the 5 songs charting over as well, with MOR veterans Eric Clapton and Joe Cocker, with Manic Street Preachers coming their distance in to the charts.
Whereas the video started with a ballad from a Oscar-winning film about a fateful cruise liner which sinks and ending with The Everlasting, sadly Germans couldn’t promote Steps anywhere in to their top 100, since they were are only a U.K. and Ireland act, with
newcomers Cleoparta, Fatboy Slim (alias Norman Cook) making his first appearance since Beats International in 1991, The Moffats, Another Level, Emilia, B*Witched, Melanie B and Melanie C (solo after The Spice Girls’ split) and Divine (a different name to the drag queen actor) which were a R&B group.

Compared to the years before, 1998 was slightly better, but it is still hard to watch until the end with so much Eurodance, Boyband stuff, Techno, Rave, Hiphop and so on. It’s revealing that the year ended with Manics‘ fantastic The Everlasting which only peaked at 88. I would also say that there has not been a year with more cover versions. Must have been about 40. Some okay, most of them totally uninspired.

Back when I was young, I was 11 in 1998, I didn't know the originals. Now I have probably heard them all. 1998 it seemed you have to take a well known melody and either use it as a sample and in the chorus (the EuroRap era) or you take the melody and sing something different (interpolations, like David Guetta's Blue). Way too many cover versions.
In the end, only a few percent of the released music is good. If you look at the 1998 charts, there are a lot of similarities between tracks and a lot of stuff wasn't good and the people behind the projects are long forgotten...

Hi everyone, can somebody please help me finding a song I've been looking for years?
In 2022 I've seen a short clip of the music video somewhere in this channel (at least I remember that way) when watching old Top 100 videos, about 1990s (1994/95, 96 or 1999 probably?), unfortunately they're deleted/hidden now. If I remember correctly, that was about #99 or so. A man sang the midtempo song, the chorus of it went sort of like 'the sky of night I wonder why' or 'the fly of night I wonder why'. I always misheard the lyrics, anyway every time I heard the song, the chorus reminded me of sunny day. Can't help singing the tune out tbh, but if I'd hear it somewhere, I definitely recognize it from the first notes.
I would be so much grateful if someone'd post at least 91-100 places of the 90s there, I would try to find the song myself from the list. Big thanks in advance! peace everyone

  • @SavedByGrace_CitizenEmperorユウ

I think 1999 something happened. In 1998, a lot of the music still sounded very 1990s, not of super great quality if you listen to all the songs there. You can think about the plastic pop acts like Britney, Christina and BSB whatever you want - at least their songs weren't using already existing melodies or just took the entire chorus from another song.
So many covers, so many cheap remakes. I like only a few but most are just trash. So many trashy lyrics. I'm not complaining about pop lyrics, but some songs just have lyrics I could write in 10 minutes. Embarrasing. You can clearly see that there are a few hit producers and a lot of wannabes who just make it on the charts by accident. And I want to point out who pointless music videos are. Yes, I know that in 1999 and a few years later, they were the easiest and also the only way to see the artist. In general, I don't care for most music videos, they are boring and just there to exist and to sell you the sexy looking artist and show you a lot of dancing and cool posing and people having fun. Many videos are even totally random.
And you can think of a track like "For An Angel" by Paul van Dyk whatever you want, it's an original composition (as far as I know), it has a nice melody, it uses sounds that I don't hear on the charts. I hear so many copycat BSB clones and other sounds where the producers clearly tried to copy the success of BSB etc. but a) they sound like cheap copies, b) the artists have no personality and soul, c) I personally like diversity in music. I don't wanna hear 50 Max Martin sounding tunes when only like 10 are good and the rest is maybe okay or not. Overusing a sound isn't good.
