    "Pure Imagination" For Beginners
In this lesson we create a beginner-focused arrangement of the tune “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory.
We first arrange the tune using simple root-3-7 voicings and we pay attention to the major and minor 251s so that we know how to identify and navigate this common progressions. We then go through the form again and enhance our voicings with chord extensions and chord alterations.
    Suspended Harmony
An interesting aspect of this tune is that it features a lot of suspended harmony; also known as sus chords. We will analyse the role of the suspended voicings and discuss how they fit into the harmonic framework of the tune.
We have created an advanced arrangement of this tune and whilst this is a beginner-focused lesson, we will hint at some of the more advanced arranging techniques. If you’d like to learn more you can check out the full advanced tutorial here:

Do you post videos of you just playing these? Like not the lesson part. The lesson is great, I'd just like to be able to listen to you play

  • @guyedwards22

Wow, I learned so much just from this video alone. Deliberate voicing construction, how to choose nice scale tones to nest into the chords, and the biggest aha of all: the harmonic utility of 7sus4 chords, how you can fall/rise into altered extensions when you resolve the 4th down to the 3rd. Thank you so much, I'm definitely going to subscribe and watch more 😊

I think at the one F to Bb, I kept wanting it to have a diatonic descending bass there. But maybe that would have been a bit too much, especially with the craziness of the reharm.

Wow what a beautiful tune and interpretation!! I will look at your jazz standards course. Also, would you consider doing this kind of jazz interpretation to a hymn, e.g. Amazing Grace. I see many people doing it, but not sure where to start. I’d also like to use the ‘real book’ to play tunes on the guitar- melody and chords! I love and play some classical but hard and often tedious.

The music with the chords, the piano with light-up keys to follow, and the actual keyboard being shown played by the instructor. The instruction is good and I absolutely love the musical arrangements in these videos.

I am very new to jazz piano. Can someone explain in the first measures, why the first Fm7 does not include the C, but the second one does, and not only that but also include a G? Like, how would someone know which notes to drop or add if the chord sheet just says Fm7
