Gloria Buckman Yankson in Asante culture, the bride’s family bears the cost of the food and decor for the engagement. They believe the groom and his family are guests on a mission and so they must prepare for the groom and his family’s welcome. However, if the groom and his family are well to do, they may offer to cover the expenses if the bride’s family may not afford such expenses. The groom’s family usually seems it an honor to cover the expenses and a chance to prove they are well and able to take care of the daughter in-law.

I'm a Jamaican-American, and my Fante husband and I already had our court wedding. We planned to return to Ghana for our traditional wedding, but the pandemic caused us to delay it. Now, we are ready to start planning, so your video was beneficial as I need to familiarize myself with all the customs and traditions. Knowing that the Fante people are part of the Akans, could I follow this same format? I'll chat with my husband's mom and sister, but it would be great to hear from you. So informative. I love the symbolisms. I love the symbolism of the Etor. I didn’t know that. I am not going to expose myself on these streets and tell you I know how the Ewes do it. 😃😃 But it’s similar. I have a funny and unique story about my dad and my list. He has put a value of at least £10 trillion pounds sterling on my bride price and my partner is reminded every time of the balance.😂😂

Wow, I didn't know about the etor, I just thought it was a special meal on birthdays.
I find my routes with both the Ga tribe and the Ewe tribe. I will say there's not much difference. What I have noticed is that, the elderly men in the Lady's family do not mix with the gathering. After the dowry and engagement items are presented to the woman's family, the okyeame together with the elderly women present the items to the elderly men in private I.e. away from the gathering. It is at this point where she gives her consent.
Also souvenirs are given as a sign of appreciation to the guest for sharing in their joy and honouring their invitation.

Thank you for tuning in, Serwa! It is usually a respected member of the family who speaks on behalf of the parents. Eg. An uncle or close friend of the family.
How would a traditional wedding process go if the woman is non-Ghanaian and the man is Ghanaian?
Thank you for tuning in, Erica! It really depends on both families. But the best way [and what I usually recommend to clients from multicultural backgrounds] is to incorporate elements from both cultures so each family feels represented and celebrated.

Wow!🤩 this video is very informative. How will things be if the lady is Ghanaian but the groom is not. How does the celebration go and please can you show a video of a non-Ghanaian man marrying a Ghanaian woman traditionally 🙏🏽
Thank you, Jessica. It really depends on the two families and where the celebration takes place (usually the bride's home in this case); but it's always nice to introduce easily recognisable aspects of both cultures so neither family feels left out.

Thank you so much for watching, Richeal. There is very little difference between the Akan & Ga Traditional Wedding. The process is the same, except the items in the marriage list differ ever so slightly and vary from family to family.

Please traditional marriage is it composure to be held in the family house
It is not compulsory, Victoria. However, many Akan parents will insist on this as it signifies the woman is being married from "a home". Where the bride's home is too small to accommodate the event, the event can be held in a close family member's house. I hope this helps. 💕
Hi Gloria, is the signing of marriage certificates in court the same process of getting the registerer general involve the same day of the event or you can sign a day before the event?
