    In this video I walk you through the techniques used to generate the floor plan for a modern barn studio and currently on the boards at 30X40 Design Workshop. The project was to design an outbuilding, a folly, that is deferential to the existing structures on the property. A simple, but flexible space is required, adapting to a variety of needs from guest quarters, to play space, to gathering, and study. A scaled down barn seemed the perfect starting point, and the schemes developed show how we take the traditional notions of the barn typology and morph them into more contemporary readings.
    I discuss the four plan options and two variants that were developed, describing how I arrived at each of the solutions. The video ends with a look at the SketchUp model I've created alongside the plans to begin studying the three-dimensional ramifications of the plan decisions. I use this to refine the design with my client as we move forward.
    I have simple, modern house plans for download on my site: thirtybyforty.c...
    Thanks for watching.

    For someone who is thinking about studying architecture and/or architectural engineering this is a really fun and interesting insight into how it is to design buildings and their floor plans! Thanks!

    Very Interesting,
    I have been designing small projects for years. Did'nt realise how set in my ways I had become. Love seeing you working on paper and diagramming. So easy to go straight to CAD these days. I also like your reference to Form Space and Order by F.D.K. Ching - I have just taken it down off the shelf now.

    I've really been enjoying your channel! I've even passed on your web site to others I know looking to build a home office space. I'd like to see a two-story design sometime if the opportunity presents itself in your work. We are trying to decide whether building over our garage and out would be the best way to accommodate a multi-use photography studio or do a connected two story structure.

    I enjoyed watching your video and I am not an architect, but in my opinion you haven't considered one of the most important aspects of a barn: its height. Why not developing idea with two levels (an upper floor) and double ceiling sections?
    I also think that your best concept was the third one (with glazing on both sides). It would conceive more the idea of spaciousness that you were chasing.
    Cheers

      @30by40  9 лет назад +4

      Prophet86 It's a reasonable question and one I didn't address in the video. First, there's a subdivision height limitation governing accessory structures (two stories wouldn't be allowed). Second, and more importantly, it wasn't part of the client directive; they didn't want two stories.
      This actually helped to achieve the barn-feel. A one story structure with a taller plate height mimics the interior height and volume of a barn more closely than adding a second floor. Adding a floor would reduce the apparent scale indoors. Cheers...

    Series: "WE..."
    We ascend from trust...into truth,
    More often, those journeys are filled with stumbles,
    Motivated by emotive energies; our intent can only become clearer with time and experience,
    When faced with the enormous responsibilities of so many, the weary and doubtful waiver in their steps,
    Without clear guidelines or procedures our choices are experimental,
    Maturity can only emerge from deep and focused practice...we will get up when we fall;
    Our common goals must be negotiated and clarified as an open invitation to agree to an equitable exchange,
    Without a structured framework or formal operational agreements,
    Mutual trust is the only basis on which we can stand firm;
    Each point of concern must always be met with unquestionable integrity,
    otherwise we all will fail to meet our minimum of expectations ;
    We will always return to the table to try to learn and correct our mistakes,
    if we are to truely progress as a family, a community and as a nation;
    We are not perfect...
    But we can and will learn to make better choices about our common future on this earth.
    John Ferraz Architect.
