- From Aug. 14, 2003, here is news about the incredible, widespread, and historic blackout that affected parts of the Northeastern US. and southern Canada. The blackout affected 45 million Americans and 10 million Canadians!! I had a friend in Florida tape the news for a couple of days, since, having no power, I couldn't....so here it is!! This is part 1 of 5, with news from NBC and Brian Williams.
I distinctly remember where I was when the lights went out at about 4:15 PM that day...sitting with my wife in a realty office, going over paperwork trying to buy a house...the one we bought that Fall, and that we're still in!! It took us 2 hours to get home that day, without any traffic lights...nomally a 20-minute drive!
This is my first time watching coverage of the blackout, so this is fascinating to me. I was one of those people stuck on the train in a darkened tunnel. There was an eerie silence and then the sound from aboveground of police sirens. Our conductor told us he had no idea what was going on so that added to the sense of unease, and of course our first thought was that it was another attack. Everyone kept calm though until MTA workers with flashlights got us off the train and guided us out of a pitch black subway station
I remember people thought this was another terrorist attack.
I think the real reason for the blackout may have been due to a type of software failure and/or computer error that wound up causing a domino effect.
Malek Masoud Actually, all of this happened because a tree fell on a High Voltage cable in Akron, Ohio. Now that's what you call Butterfly Effect!
To be honest that was what I was thinking. At first I thought it just a normal blackout, but when I got my radio and turned on the news they were saying the blackout was all the way to New York and Canada. I initially thought terrorism because there's no way a blackout this big could happen on its own, but apparently it did.
MarioDeSanta97 they thought that because of the timing of it was so close to Sept 11 2001,,during bush presidency while we was at war..so you never know...
@@stefanobonetti1 The biggest thing was that the grid monitoring system at FirstEnergy in Ohio failed, and when the trees fell on the lines, tripping them, they couldn't see the lines tripping until over a minute after.
Man, this was a new childhood experience back then. I remember it being like Silent Hill going up the stairs to my apartment with my dad. It was at night and all we had was a single flashlight.
I met my wife during the black out, we now have 5 kids
Gabriel X wow god bless
That’s awesome!
God bless y’all, man!
Damn, no power for two days only and 5 kids🤣🤣🤣
Gabriel X I guess the lights never turned backed on,huh?
I met my girlfriend during a blackout too. Well, it was a different kind of blackout (alcohol was involved) but it was still a blackout 🤣
I remember this one well. I was eight years old at the time, and I was going into the third grade. My friends and I were lucky... much of southeastern Connecticut never lost power - the major generating stations in that part of the state were able to "disconnect" from the grid. For those that are curious, this is considered a prime example of a _cascading failure_.
I was eight at the time walking home from the store in New York I saw a lot of people outside I thought we were having a block party lol.
I was 19 back then In Brooklyn.i was in a c town supermarket with my mom and sister when the lights started to flicker and then off. We walked the 4 blocks home in that fucking heat and everybody on our block was outside we bought about 8 big candles so we can have light and cook (with gas burners) that was the hottest night ever could not sleep thank god the power came back on at 2:15 pm the next day
When the blackout happened,I was scared because dad told me about the NYC 1977 blackout on how they looted stores and I thought it was going to happen in NYC but thank goodness nothing happened.
It was some break in but not a lot like the 1977 one only they had in the 2003 some guy broke in a store in fell the roof in he die. But 1977 was a lot looting in riot in arson...
Oh my god stores getting looted how scary 😱
Seriously how would that endanger you
@@KufLMAO Have you seen any lootings in the 2003 blackout?
@@jasonpalacios2705 No, I haven’t. I’m sick of people pretending that looters are an equivalent threat level to roving gangs actually looking for violence.
@@KufLMAO When did I ever made that comparison?
I was eight years old, and in my hometown in southeastern Michigan, our cable went out, but we didn't lose power. I have no idea why I remember that.
we lost power down by dundee
16 years ago today! I remember this day. I would love to hear your stories 😊
I lived in Woodbridge, NJ when this happened, I was on the cordless phone talking to my mom when I heard a weird zapping sound in the earpiece and my phone went dead and my computer shut off. The way it sounded in the phone was horrible, I literally HEARD this blackout through the phone & what a horrendous noise it made, never heard anything like it. I think our power came back on a few hrs later.
Remember this day, I was stuck in Manhattan luckily I was in Chinatown the bridges to get back to brooklyn was not far at all. I walked all the way to the williamsburgh bridge to get back to Brooklyn. Took me about a hour and a half to get over that bridge in that weather and it was really crowded. It was about 3pm. I had to hurry and make my way back home before night because it was very bad in my neighborhood. Made it home around 6ish. Corner stores was giving out sandwhiches for like2 bucks. Ice creeams were free sodas were like 50 cents. I racked up on some food and went home to find out my family that came all the way from long island city was over which was about 7 of them. We had only 2 rooms and it was hot as hell. Boy what a night in brooklyn, shootings robberys, a stabbing, etc. It was hectic me and my cousin stood on our stoop at night around 11 and it was so crowded out side nothing but gang members lurking back and forth. Boy that was a crazy day!
Kind of the same in my Brooklyn neighborhood Brownsville
I remember this as well, it happened on a Friday night luckily I was home at the time so I spent my weekend listening to my DX-440 radio listening to the news
WOW! Thanks for posting this. I missed seeing the news about the Blackout because we didn't have any power, LOL.
I was at Strider Records in the West Village section of NYC when the power went out. I had to take the NY Waterway ferry to Hoboken, then a diesel-powered NJT Morristown Line train (because electric power wasn't functioning at Hoboken Terminal) to Brick Church (East Orange, NJ), and finally had to walk back home to 28 Bedford Street. Took a very long time, too.
I lived and worked just outside Detroit back then. It was less than 10 miles between work and home and I drove home around dusk. It took about 2 hours with all the traffic lights out. Was an eerie, surreal experience. Funny, in the first 15 minutes or so of the blackout we all thought the company I worked for, which had begun bankruptcy proceedings, hadn't paid the electric bill.
Same here. Lived in Warren and worked in Sterling Heights. Took about an hour to get home. Remember plugging in an old corded phone and called some friends out of the area to get news on what was going on.
@@mschwes5376 My fiancé's family lived in Grand Blanc and they had power so we corralled the cats and spent a couple of days with them until our power came back on. We were also able to put gas in the cars - none of the gas stations by us had power
I remember where I was that day too. I was just heading back home across the street from brighten beach where I was with my mom n brother for two hours it happened 10 minutes before we headed back. We were crossing the street n we notice the traffic light wasn’t working. We eventually made our way back to the building where one of the porters had said there had just been a blackout. Mom is like no way up until when the guy the pointed towards some electrical equipment nearby n they were all offline. So we looked down at our cellphones n they were all suddenly dead also. Couldn’t even make calls receive calls at all. No even texts could be sent. We then started hearing it was citywide. A few other states up n down the east coast n even parts of Canada. We go upstairs to our unit. The TV, internet electricity out. That’s when we realized this was a whole lot worse then what we initially thought. We thought we were getting hit with another terrorist attack at that point with the fresh events that occurred with 9/11 just less than two years before n the officials couldn’t even figure out where it first started. We couldn’t cook so we ordered pizza. I had to run two blocks away to pick it up n the workers there were working still in the dark obviously with back up generators I assume. There was a line with some ppl being impatient or not feeling having to wait knowing what was going on. My mom’s husband who was the super of two buildings including where I lived at the time. Unfortunately had his hands full with trying to rescue a number of ppl stuck in the elevators of both the buildings once the blackout occurred he was at it for a while. He had most of the porters stay for the night since they really weren’t able to drive back home n extra manpower was now needed to deal with the blackout at hand. The security guard was back n fourth over the radio walking around to see the super or the workers were having problems throughout the buiding. I tell u it wasn’t fun for the ppl who had to work through that shit especially the public safety agencies or my mom’s husband who had rescue ppl that were stuck underground or in elevators. For me on the other hand I enjoyed it due to the fact once I made it back in one piece later on from the pizzeria with nobody trying to mug me for my pizza pie. We were out on the terrace listening to the radio only able to keep up to date info on what was going on around the city n the country with this blackout. There was nothing else to do so I just stood on the terrace for the rest of the day into late in the evening listening to the nonstop coverage of the blackout n looking on into the pitch black sky cool but frightening a little bit too cause u didn’t know if there would rioting or looting going on where the national guard would be needed in an already dire situation. The only thing I could c was a few ppl below on the ground who were still out or wandering around with flashlights shining in the air. It was cool went to sleep really late in the hot room unable to use the AC for the night with the outage.
I was 6 when this occured, We had plenty of candles & flashlights, we stayed in our building with the door locked witch the exception of going down once. I remember when the power did finally come back on in the Bronx all you heard below and in the terraces was clapping cheers and joyful screams. I will never forget this forget this what an experience, Thank god with todays technology we will have communication.
It was my 40th birthday, I remember coming home from work after working a 6am-2.30 pm shift. I was watching "Millionaire" when at 4.12 pm the power went out. I'm glad I had a radio and plenty of batteries.
i remember when i was at my god mother's house n i was tryin 2 cut on the fan n it wasn't workin then i found out all the power went off. There was no electricity what so ever
We live in Ann arbor, and we had a lot of fun during the blackout. I had a table and brought out Uno and the portable radio and just listened to WWJ. The next day we went to my aunt's house in Canton and she had power. It was fun despite no TV.
I was in Toronto and it had been a very hot muggy day. My baby son was dehydrated and we had just taken him to the hosiptal. I was still in the waiting room of the childrens hospital just after 4pm when the power went out. The hospital had generators so we spent the night at the hospital while my son was being given fluids through an IV.
The power in Toronto came back on the next morning so around 9 AM we left the hospital and walked home through very empty streets.
As for food - I purchased food from the vendors outside - they did a rip roaring trade that day. Shops selling icecream gave away icecream cones for free since it was starting to melt with no refirdgeration.
How are they suppose to watch t.v and its a blackout
The NBC Nightly News was and is a national news program, not just for New York, but for the whole of the US.
@@johnking5174 You've reminded me that I was in a suburban Philadelphia shopping mall when I saw images of New York without power. (The Independent System Operator for most of Pennsylvania was able to hit the switch in time to dodge the onrushing failure.)
@@floydjohnson7888 In Los Angeles we looked on in sympathy but also a little bit smug.
Thanks Raymond Kenney!
Fucking Ray
This was 12 years ago today and I still remember what happened on that afternoon. I was watching Pokemon like I did every afternoon (on WBNX TV in Akron) when the TV screen went snowy. Flipping through the channels I saw only 17, 23, and 67 were still on and I thought that at least Cleveland had lost power since those three were the only channels in the area not broadcasting in Akron. About a half hour later channels like 3 5 and 8 were back on and national news had interrupted regular programming and said that much of the Northeast US and Southeast Canada had lost power! I live in the southern half of Akron Ohio and our house never lost power.
I live in Cleveland. @MarkJWeather
August 14th, 2023 will be 20 years since the blackout.
NExt one will make this one look like a cakewalk
I live in Toronto, Canada--population 5 million people. There was no power in Toronto. I was just about to press the SEND button at 4:12 PM when the computer screen went black. The first thing I thought was how big this power outage was. I walked out of the building and the guy sitting on the porch of his house listening to his portable radio said that the power was out in NYC. I love watching the news and I couldn't. I was part of this story. My family in western Canada were all watching the news.
thanks for this upload.
This was the first of NYC's blackout to affect NJ as well, though we had a 7 hour blackout on our own in 1967.
I was 9 at the time when this happened me and my family was checking out this apartment in Brooklyn that afternoon we but we still lived in the Bronx that was the longest walk back
Christopher Agurs from BK to the Bronx! Damm bro
Damn man! Brooklyn to The Bronx!
I remember when this happened. I was 9 years old and luckily I was at home playing video games. Its also a good thing I live in upstate New York. I never realized how bad it was in NYC!
Cascading failure due to lines hitting trees; it began with the Eastlake power plant in northeast Ohio going offline, and as the grid moved power from other areas, it caused more and more lines to fail. Wikipedia "Northeast Blackout of 2003" for specifics.
I remember. Back then I was like 7. So I lived with my grandmother by that time. I was down stairs watching Jerry Springer. In all of a sudden the TV cut off and I thought the reason why cut off because it was old so after that it wouldn't cut back on so I just went outside lol
I was on vacation when this happened thank God
I remember that I had just got out of work , it was VERY warm that day- the power was off 14 hours in Buffalo, NY and Western New York
I was living in the Greater New Haven, CT area at the time...because we were on a different grid, we weren't affected. The same went for areas that had smaller, independent power services (here in CT for example, Wallingford has its own generation capabilities.) Anyone else have the same experience?
I was at work in the stockroom, and the next thing I remember, the lights went dim, then brightened, then out. We all gathered to listen on a battery operated radio to see what was wrong, and that was how we got the details about what was going on.
I remember this. Wow 10 years it will be next month, I remember i was playing my ps1 when the lights went out. I didn't know what was going on lol
I remember back in 2003, I lived in Kingston when it happened during the blackout. It happened after coming home from a trip from Lake George and had ice cream and then, the blackout happened. The power had restored after 9:00 PM.
Musicradio77 Television Network BLACKOUT '77 WAS WORSE
+Edward Koepke BLACKOUT OF NOT A FUCK GIVEN WAS WORSE.

That cell phone was a Motorola Startac lol I had one
I was 17 when this happened. We lost power at about 4pm, and didn't get it back until 6am the next morning.
Goodness I was 16 and remember watching this live.
Up here in Boston, I didn't lose power.
I was at a local beach and it wasn't 'til I returned to my then-girlfriend's house that I found out that there was such a huge blackout.
I was born 5 years after this but it's very interesting and I think that in the future this will be taught in schools.
I remember that. I live in detroit well 30 minutes outside the city but my power went out around 4pm. I unloading the dishwasher and I notice that lights were out. I kid you not I thought it was y2k three years. The first night was interesting because my brother's friends were over and had flashlights and lanterns and we play monoplay. then I got miserable because it hot and nothing to do so my mom sent to my uncle right when the power came back on.
and it was friggin hot! Thank God Hoboken had juice when I got home at 3 am
LOL...I was off that day and using it as a training bike ride - in my own zone until I was ready to cross the street and saw no lights. Didn't realize at first since it was still daylight. I learn... keep ample tea candles on hand.
I understand this was all started by a malfunctioning ice machine in BL's Tavern in Schenectady, NY.
Most people who drink too much have blackouts too. The only difference is, they don't remember what the hell happened. lmao.
That was right, the lead stated Brian Williams was substituted for Tom Brokaw during the worst blackout disaster of 2003.
Watch Dogs somehow bring me here
In the game the '03 Blackout was explained as a terrorist attack.
+Blake Childers Yes, I know.
Were it now for circuits being tripped to prevent the blackout from spreading further, all of North America (from the Canadian Arctic to Panama) might have lost power!
What time did the coverage start.
I remember watching the news coverage of the blackout.
remember this like yesterday used to live in pontiac michigan we drove all the way up to grand rapids so we could have power
I wonder what the effect was on the stock market.
I remember when this happened I was at the fair in my hometown in Ontario Canada.
I was at work and was already working with huge ovens baking glass and was Happy it happen cause I lived up the street and was able to go home...hell it was hott
I live in Waterloo, ON. I remember this day it dragged on for hours. Got kind of boring after a while.
i had to go to a hotel for 2 days when this happened, i was just a little kid. now i know why we had to go to the hotel for 2 days.
I remember being in brookdale hospital because my mom thought I had the mumps but turned out to be mosquito bites that were scratched. I was only 5 watching cyberchase on channel 13 when the power went out. I had my Gameboy Advance but was low in battery. My mom shopped for flash lights and I told her to get more batteries and used them for my gameboy and got in trouble lol
I was on the NYC subway at the time. Luckily, my train was in the station, with the doors open. The conductor made an announcement stating that the train lost power. The subway car emptied in a matter of seconds. My original thought was that it was another terrorist attack.
I was stuck in traffic on Long Island God that day sucked getting home hot as fuck too
What time entered special edition was until hours.
I remember that like yesterday. I was in Detroit and I couldn't even see my hands in front of me that night. We had to flash flashlights to see our neighbors. Lol.
I was 19 and living in Sussex NJ (VERY north jersey) We did not lose power. I drove to Johnson NY (about 45min) to buy very dirty weed, and they still had power there too.
My dumb ex and her mom were in the NY city that day seeing that stupid movie Freaky Friday and they got jammed up for a while but I eventually remember her coming home that night so must not have been that bad.
I remember this the power was off for more than 14 hours-and it was hot here in Buffalo.
i was born august 14 2003 10:40pm Hamilton, Ontario, Canada St. joseph's hospital

Honestly, Americans overly dramatize everything. Totally hilarious.
Happy Anniversary Blackout of 2003! :-)
I was in Coney Island i just had got there i was at the food stand on the board walk at 10th st and i heard the cook said that their power went out so i paid it no mind, i was on a date then we went to the beach and laid out a blanket and i had my radio with me then i heard on the radio that the city is in a big black out this was about 4:15 pm and then they kept saying it then i told my date that we are in a major black out she said whatttttttttt, so we stayed a while because i had my jeep to get back home so people on the beach found out what was going on and they started to gather around my radio to hear the news, most of them was stuck at Coney Island because they came on the train so i told my date i think we should leave because later on things might get worst and i have a good way to get back home to the Bronx she lives in Brooklyn so i gather up my stuff off the beach and went to my jeep the good part about it was that i had a big cooler and a lot of ice and water so we was good, i took her back home then i had to take that long journey back home the only bridge i can get across was the Manhattan bridge i had to show my NY Sanitation id to drive across it took me about 4 hours to get back home and i had a little bit gas left, when i got to my apt people was out side grilling their dinners, it was a crazy night.
I thought it was another terrorist attack. Every time something happens in NYC i always think that it is a terrorist attack. SMFH
My family wasn't affected, as we lived in Kentucky, which wasn't affected in the blackout of 2003.
ITS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU OVERLOAD THE GRIDSSSS
I couldn't watch this. The power was out.
I remember this i was about 14 i also had a opointment with my eye doc that day, he put those damn drops in my eyes with pupils so wide open i couldn't see shit for the rest of the day or even the breaking news text bar on TV XD. And our first but brief major outage on Sep 8th out here in the southwest I feel for you guys.
To think i was celebrating my birthday on that day more then a decade ago in 2003.
i was in high school when this happened

I even remember the episode haha it was the riddle episode and the episode where they spoofed Alice in wonderland haha
I lived through this 5 Days of Hell and eating pop tarts because my stove was electric.
American news reporters always try to finger point to Canada first in any major incident that covers both countries.
No dont find blame with the area with the one of the largest western population centres in the world, blame a small Canadian town. They said southern Canada, so southwest ontario
Seems like yesterday. Sop
Luckily I was in California during the time.
@Gary7Gann dude this was only 2 years after 9/11 the were still recovering then
I work for a newspaper. We were just finished up the latest edition when the power went out. We sort of puttered around for a bit before deciding that "Gee, the whole block must be out!" and went home. I didn't realize there was a widespread outage until I got in the car and turned on the radio. Fortunately, by the time I got home my power was back on. My sister wasn't so lucky; she lived in Detroit and they didn't get their power back until late Sunday night. She ended up coming down to my place for the weekend, I had had lights and air conditioning!
the day i turned 18 go figure lmao
thumbs up if came here after seeing "Watch Dogs 2012" trailers
Wow I remember the black out
I was 6
I was 5. I remember kind of being scared, and I think it kind of conditioned me because I still feel an unsettling sense of helplessness when a minor power outage happens at home.
I feel old lol. I was 23
