I'm not sold on 3.0 yet. I already have my linear arranger in MPC 2 with a 999 bar sequence and 8 audio tracks. Not impressed. Recording track mutes and chaining in song mode is the MPC way. Linear arranging is the PC way. Why break a classic workflow that made so many hits, to create a workflow thats available on any laptop? Creating a DAW like environment might seem like a good move to get beat makers to buy an MPC, it's actually a bad business move because energy takes the path of least resistance, which is the DAW already on their laptops. The MPC needs to also be its own thing, not just a midi controller on a mobile DAW. AKAI: Please at least make a CLASSIC MODE switch for the old MPC WAY. If we now cant load the beats we've made for the last few decades in 3.0, but could in version 2.15, I'd say its a bad thing.
Because having separate programs & tracks made zero sense and was incredibly confusing and Akai is doing the right thing here by pushing people to up their music writing game. We can do better than merely writing 4-12 tracks / programs in a single sequence and simply muting different tracks for each sequence. It is lazy and unfortunately, become the normal operation for any kind of electronic music, be it rap, EDM, Trap, etc. Sure, maybe we dont merely mute tracks, maybe we make small tweaks, but we are not writing unique sequences, we are merely copy and pasting 90% of the song. As to not being able to load beats from prior versions, this is not true, it works just fine with a few caveats and workarounds to adjust for the new direction the MPC is going. First off, the newest line of MPCs (MPC One, MPC Live, MPC X and their later iterations) are not compatible with prior MPC projects. Decades? No. You havent been able to load an MPC 4000 (or earlier) project on a modern MPC. Second, you CAN load projects from 2.15 in 3.0 just fine, with one caveat, you must be mindful of the fact that tracks and programs are merged, so in those situations, where for example, you might be using a VST instrument twice, or, where you have a duplicate track that you were using the same audio sample for, you will need to bounce the track to an audio track. An overwhelming majority of users will have almost no issues with 2.15 tracks on 3.0 firmware, I have hundreds of tracks I wrote in linear form and using the "MPC way" as you call it, and only had two tracks that required about 20 minutes of tweaking to get them functioning just fine on v3 firmware. Like it or not, this is the direction MPC is moving, new plugins, features, VST's etc will require you and other users to update, as the Akai platform evolves, you will eventually update. Beta 2 brings the firmware very close to 2.15, and in alot of ways, does it better than 2.15. They will further improve and enhance stem separation, probably in the next update, and provide event-based track muting, which is the only two complaints I have heard with the current beta (and the bizarre way Splice is integrated now). We don't need a "classic" way, it already exists and works just fine, aside from event based track mutes, and I have no doubt that will happen next update. The MPC needs to be a MIDI controller on a mobile DAW if they want people to use it how it is intended; the centerpiece of music production. I NEED the ability to edit notation in a piano roll and to route audio to different sends, and that is exactly what a DAW is. Take that out of the MPC and it loses its appeal, everyone goes back to using a computer... I really dont understand people asking for less features and functionality, sometimes, I have to wonder whether people are thinking about the devices they are using. If I didnt want a DAW, I could just buy a Poly or Roland sequencer, but the Akai and Maschine+ platforms sold me precisely on this because they are standalone platforms that allow me to write without a PC.
This is great news. I feel like we need another setting on Track Mutes which allows us to set the Mute style to Audio or Midi. Audio Mute would cut off immediately, and Midi Mute style would allow the audio to trail/fade out with whatever tail is present on that track. What do you think?
