- In an article by Political Reporter Thando Maeko, FF Plus has called on the ANC to recognise the Afrikaner-only community of Orania. The FF Plus argues that the re-election of Northern Cape Premier, Zamani Saul, opens a pathway for their request regarding Orania's status. Notably, the FF Plus voted alongside the ANC in the provincial legislature to secure Saul's re-election. Orania Representative Council's Carel Boshoff says what is happening in Orania is freedom of association.

We need to move away from exclusion towards inclusion. If we do figure out how to do that with our laws, we will keep on repeating history over and over again - then excluding this group, then excluding that group, and we will never be united.

This is a trend which is not specifically just true for South Africa and it is idiotic. We need all hands on deck, doing as much as they can, to try to get this dying horse to walk. If you want to exclude people, at least give them an area where they are not excluded: it is complete nonsensical not to be willing to do that. I am an Afrikaans South African, but I undoubtedly and staunchly disagree with the notion of Orania. It’s far more than the perceived segregation of race - it’s self appointed superiority of culture and religion to ‘conserve’ traditional practices.
Everyone is allowed to their values and beliefs, yes. But as mankind, we should at least respect one another (not HAVE to, but WANT to), irrespective of indifference, religion or tradition.
There is no place, reason, validity or view that in my opinion, justifies the notion of EXCLUSION. It flies in the face of ‘embracing thy neighbour’, as a principle Christian approach…ironically so…🤷🏻♀️ It’s time to revaluate the historical ideologies of discriminate thinking, as symbolised by Orania. it’s unacceptable and an embarrassment to me as an Afrikaner, purely by virtue of cultural association. Orania’s allowed existence is not conducive to the growth and development of progressive democracy.

Summary - Afrikaners are a mixture of German, French, Dutch and Porteguese people that rejected Europe and formed their own culure and communities.
TL;DR - The long version
VoC established a trading post which eventually became Cape Town. There was a major class problem. The higher up snobby rich people spoke pure dutch. The workers consisted of a mixture between German, French and Dutch. Why do you think we have a place called Franshoek? French were very skilled wine farmers. Usually French refugees was being put to work on those farms. The VoC also pulled in labour from Malaysia, since they knew how to farm certain malasian fruits like bananas and it was cheaper to grow certain fruits from the settlement instead of going all the way around to Malaysia and back.
*Fun fact:* in Namibia there are still a German group just like the Afrikaners. I only discovered this last year when I met someone from that place. They are called 'German Namibians' or 'Deutschnamibier'
During that time, some of the people had many conflicts and infighting regarding the European government and VoC, later they decided to just move out of Cape Town to get away from the European governments and VoC to form their own community. This was the origtinal Voortrekkers, a mixture of various European nationalities.
As the voortrekkers were moving up North East, the British popped in and took over Cape Town as British people do. Since Cape Town was taken over by British rule, a lot of Dutch people likely left Cape Town or stayed around. The Bristish had a very strong Navy during this period. This is why you see a lot of coastal towns with Britsh names. The British also started a small settlement somewhere east, now known as Durban named after "Sir Benjamin D'Urban". I haven't checked the British history, but I have a feeling they imported a lot of people from india to do some labour. Reading up on it now, according to the History books, the British had a hard time expanding because the Zulu tribes made it hard for them as Zulu people do. xD
As the Voortrekkers went up North East, somewhre there was a disagreement in which direction to move. So the party split into 2 different groups. One went North, the other continued North East. For the group that went North, they discovered Diamonds. After building up a town and a community which surrounded a diamond mining industry the British got a wiff and decided to just take over the town by force as British do. This town is today known as 'Kimberley' in the Northern Cape. Note the British name, and let me tell you, people did not hold back on the mining.
As for the Voortrekker group that went North east, they met the Zulu's. According to the history books again, the Voortrekkers found some land not occupied by the British and then asked the Zulu's permission to settle for a bit. The Zulu's agreed, however sometime after the agreement the Zulu's attacked the group, not sure if it's because of their interaction with the British or why. These attacks happened at "Drakensberg foothills at what was later called Blaauwkrans and Weenen". This was around 1838. This betrayal resulted in 3000 Zulu casualties.
As I'm reading, aparently there was no conflict for Xhosa people allowing that particular voortrekker group to settle and move on through the Eastern Cape.
After the Zulu encounter/attack the Voortrekker group went north and then discovered a place with copius amount of gold. There was so much gold that the rivers were white of it. This is where the Afrikaans/Dutch phrase came in "Witwatersrand", meaning "White waters edge". (Take a note that the word 'rand' eventually became SA's currency, because it was first based on gold) The discovery was made in 1886.
They built a town and started mining gold. This town became known as Johannesburg (The city of gold). Once again the British got a wiff of it, but this time the Voortrekkers now known as the Afrikaners were prepared, since they got some information about what happened to the other group in Kimberley.
Between the Zulu's giving the British a hard time, even though it costed many lives and the Afrikaaners keeping the British away from Johannesburg, but British people placed Afrikaans people and their children into concentration camps to scare them. Some of these documented wars were called the "Boer wars". First one happening between 1880-1881 and second one happening between 1899-1902. The only thing that kept the Afrikaners sane and well adjusted was religion. Due to past beef with the British this is also why even today Afrikaans people use a derogatory term for English people known as "Soutpiel" or "Soutie". It means salty genitals, because the British came with one leg in Britian and one leg in SA with their balls hanging in the ocean.
Even after the 2 wars, the British still had rule over South Africa. The British also made citisens in SA get involved in the First world war, around 1914. Keep in mind, a lot of people from VoC also seen as Afrikaners likely still stayed and did business in Cape Town during this period. Those Afrikaners that pussied out on the voortrekker journey was not happy to join the war efforts in EU. Around 1912 ANC popped into existance as a black only group.
Only around 1961, the British government realised they did a bad and decided to make SA a Republic. A lot of British people either left or stayed once again. This gave the Afrikaners a chance to build things. Eskom was founded in 1923, but between 1960 and 1994 (34 years) they scaled up electricity from 4000 MWH to 40,000 MWH. Today our max capacity is only 44,000 MWH. ANC only built 2 power stations between 1994 and 2024 (30 years)
Since as far a I can see, there was no base constitution. There was only a mix of British and new Afrikaner laws. Since there was no base law, this meant racist people from both the Afrikaner and British side started enforcing appartheid law around 1948. The government spread fear and propaganda to mostly the white people, making them believe that they are in danger and black people will overtake the country, crush the white people and everything they built. Fear to the white people combined with oppressive laws to the black people. This is how appartheid came into fruition and how the laws that was introduced slowly became more and more suppressive. This was known as the "Swart gevaar" - "Black danger".
*Another fun fact:* Today South Africa on average have 70 daily murders. That is nearly 25 000 murders a year that we know of. To give you a perspective, the current Hamas war at the Gaza strip in one year had around "38 000" murders.
Anyways, the Appartheid government once again generated a very familiar elite structure in the government. Although lots of smart ballsy people, of all ethnicities, both outside and inside the country eventually stood up against how stupid the fear is. Between 1984 and 1990 Americans and Europe sanctioned SA to relinquish these laws and stop appartheid.
Funny thing about one of the sanctions: They sanctioned the oil, but that just forced South Africa to develop the technology to turn coal into oil. Even so, in 1990 the government felt the economic pressure of the sanctions and then their fear of an economic collapse overpowered the fabricated fear of black people wrecking everything and killing them. They then released Mandela and end appartheid.
As for the voortrekkers, some of the Afrikaners/Boers group that went North also never stopped going North, some ended up all the way into Kenya.
