Thanks for your works, both the Yale Romanization for the Cantonese as well as the English subtitles. Generally it's a great English translation. I learned those smart adaptions of yours. However, I also made some adjustments as I deemed appropriate, for some simplicity purpose.
    Here's the outcome:
Xiao Kan Feng Yun 《笑看风云》 (Smile and Watch the Storm)
Siu Tai Fung Wan 《笑看风云》 (Smile and Watch the Storm)
_Who doesn't have some deeply ingrained emotions?_
*seui nang yu gai hau gwo*
    _Who can predict the consequences?_
*seui mut yau yat se gau han sam mo*
_Who doesn't have some old resentments,_
*yat dim dim mou sam cho*
    _or a little unintentional mistake?_
*seui mut yau yat se dak bat dou dik mung*
_Who doesn't have some unattainable dreams?_
*seui yan fu nei fu ngo do*
_Who, between us, carried the burden more?_
*seui yun yi gaai sik wai liu sam mo*
_Who is willing to explain why?_
*yat siu yi ging fung wan gwo*
_One laughter and the tumultuous times have already passed_
*wut dak hoi sam sam bat gei han*
    _Live happily without holding grudges_
*wai gam tin fun siu cheung sau go*
_Sing a song for today's laughter_
*yam hung kam kap sau san dik faai lok*
_Let the heart absorb a new happiness_
*joi maan fung jung chong hoi sam so*
_Open your heart in the evening breeze_
*seui yun gei chong song chung chung wong si*
_Who wants to remember the vicissitudes of life and the fleeting past?_
*seui yan si deui si cho*
    _Who is right or wrong?_
*chung mut yau gaai sik wai liu sam mo*

    • @lookatthesigns

I did so because the song is in Cantonese.

    • @GeneralLiuofBoston1911
      @GeneralLiuofBoston1911 5 лет назад +3

      Hanyu Pinyin is for Mandarin
      Yale Romanization is for Cantonese
The easiest way you can tell which is which by the pronunciation of the words. Mandarin is a bit more flowing and 'cleaner' in terms of sound while Cantonese is more harsher and definitive in terms of sound. You'll notice how songs in Mandarin have softer consonants while Cantonese uses the more hard pressed ones. And when speaking, Mandarin is more rigid in form while Cantonese is more slang-ey. Plus Mandarin is more widely spoken as it's being pushed as a uniform language of sorts across China while Cantonese is spoken primarily in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and overseas Chinese in Chinatowns across the world.

@@aNTO-rm5xj I'm Cantonese. Nothing wrong with describing how it sounds. If I don't enjoy Cantonese, let alone I wouldn't be following this channel or liking the music. I grew up listening to Cantonese music from Leslie Cheung and Mandarin music from Teresa Teng. I don't hate Cantonese, just describing how it sounds from a non-native speaker's perspective.
People just are more likely to learn Mandarin over Cantonese, especially nowadays and you have to acknowledge that trend.
