I don’t know why, but all e30s have a flaw in the heather radiator under the HVAc unit and the drip slowly overtime. Eventually the get to this point. Although this one I have to admit is super bad. Our e30 had a bit of rust, but a lifting the carpet it was living in a puddle of coolant.
It what happens when you leave any car sitting in a grass paddock over a length of time, such as this neglected Bimmer, around two decades. Decay from moisture and rising damp. Kudos for the OP in trying to rescue this machine. From my experience restoring/ refurbishing cars, I wouldn't go there...
