      Relying on panning and stereo width for cleaning up the mix can be dangerous because most people are listening to their music on really crappy speakers that are either mono or don't really have a decent stereo spread. Our jobs would be much easier if everyone listened to their music on decent speakers lol. Proper EQ and compression that is *supplemented* by smart use of panning is the way to go.

    • @WorldITCB
      @WorldITCB 6 лет назад

      I’d say focus on arrangement more than anything but if you don’t have any control over that, volume, EQ, and panning will be your go to tools.

  • @wynnberry9160
    @wynnberry9160 6 лет назад

    I know this is an old video but I thought I'd add some input. When you were using the RComp you left it on ARC which is (Automatic Release Control) so when you changed your release it did not affect your release. Also, you said you were going for a warmer sound and you left it on Electro which is modeled after new compressors instead of Opto which is an old style compressor. Just some food for thought.

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine 6 лет назад

      The ARC doesn't ignore the release values you set. They are used to scale the overall release time. You can turn it off but yes, I prefer the sound with ARC. I wouldn't say electro is less "warm", just personal preference.

    • @wynnberry9160
      @wynnberry9160 6 лет назад

      Misworded, I didn't mean completely ignore release control values but if you want maximum control I would turn it to manual. Thanks for responding to this comment. Keep up the great work man.

    Awesome tut. One thing I've always wondered, is it standard procedure to mix vocals over the "pre mastered" track? Or would it be better to mix over certain parts of the track then bouncing it all out for mastering. Doing it this method seems the simplest and best but I'm also wondering if the final track gets slightly eq'd to make room for the vocals or would one use a dynamic eq sidechain to duck certain frequencies on the pre master when the vocals come in? Subscribed

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine 6 лет назад +1

      Hi John, the best case scenario is that you are mixing with the stems for the track so you have more flexbility. That's not always possible though and these days producer's beat mixes are getting better. This video talks about a good way to work with the 2 track more effectively - ruclips.net/video/0Y7eSp-9KtM/видео.html

    • @SeanDivine

      you can get creative with some of the stock plugins in logic to create "tape" like effects. Specifically the bitcrusher (use the mix control to make it subtle), tape delay (I have a video on this one) and then any distortion that's used lightly to be more like saturation.

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine 7 лет назад +2

      the plugins will process the audio the same way if you select stereo. In this case, I used a stereo reverb as an insert also. I generally choose stereo out of habit, especially on stereo aux channels.

    Hi Sean, great video and great stuff. I have watched many your video, you are very professional and your tips and trick are so great. Can i open and spread with modulation in Reverb and Delay in my aux? Thanks
    Greetings from Italy

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine 7 лет назад +1

      I wouldn't use reverb or delay on the master bus. Try a plugin like Waves Vitamin or look into mid-side processing. That will be very helpful for a wider mix.

    • @SimoneFrauFrauaudiopro

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine 7 лет назад +2

      thanks! yes, I do like to use multiband compression on vocals, especially to control the low mid range. As for stereo imaging plugins I do use them sometimes on vocals, usually more for choruses but most of the width comes from the way I record them. I try to work with many layers and use panning to spread things out.

    Can you adjust the volume of the vocals after compression? Or should you just do that with the make-up gain inside the plugin? Is there a difference between the gain?
    Sometimes I'm in the positon where I'm like... I've added compression... but my vocal still seems buried or 'not in the pocket.' Then again... most of us bedroom rappers are rapping over mastered beats which needs to be turned down considerably.

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine 7 лет назад +1

      adjusting the volume after compression would be essentially the same as using the make up gain. I would use the make up gain control for any major adjustments and leave the fader for minor last tweaks.

    Are you mixing with head phone? What is the difference with using the monitors vs head phones? I've been getting mix reviews..

    Hey Sean I love your videos and the way you mix but I don't own any analog gear or mixer so is it going to be impossible to mix like you ? 😕

      no, it's definitely possible! this session was mixed entirely with plugins :) that said, it's essential to have accurate monitoring (or at least speakers / headphones that you know very, very well) and study how your mixes translate to other systems

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine 7 лет назад +1

      I generally use a fast attack for hip hop to catch all the transients of the vocal

    Thanks so much for all these tutorials. I'm trying to treat vox similar to your method here and the lead sounds very boxy. Any way to treat that specifically. Vox clear but sound like he recorded in a bathroom now. Ha! Appreciated. New subscriber here!
