- Well, we're doing something a little different today. Rather than chatting stocks and crypto, we're chatting about my experience tree planting, a truly amazing way to make money fast. I tree planted for 3 years in Northern Ontario, Manitoba and Northern Alberta and I had a blast. Over the course of the 3 seasons I planted over 250,000 trees and met some of my best friends.
If you are a student and want to make money fast this summer, tree planting is an amazing option to help pay down your tuition or fund your travels.

I did 3 seasons during my early twenties and I can assure you there is nothing easy money to make out there that’s hard work outside with the bugs, scorching sun, pouring rain and often snow during the spring even though I had the best times doing it it’s also the hardest job you could ever encounter but my best early twenties memories as well

That's awesome Mike! I had a few close friends from Manitoba go out west to BC for a few summers to tree plant, and they came back with great stories. It sounded like a great experience all around! Great video!
Thanks Kyle yeah it was quite the blast! I probably planted pretty close to you, we had days off in Winnipeg, Steinbach, Marchand, lac des bones and planted mostly in the sandilands forest I think it was called!
@@MikeJacobMorrison Nice! That’s all in and around my stomping grounds. I’ve snowmobiled and dirt biked throughout all those areas (Sandilands, Lac Du Bonnet). Small world! I’ll be in Steinbach next week for a work meeting.

I have. I'm going in a few days for my second season in BC. Can't wait to go plant some trees.
I broke my pb cash and trees during my third season when I planted 4500 and 4000 at 16 cents a tree but you only remember these days when you quit 😅
This is a questionable job to do if you intend to work it for a single summer. Odds are rookies will be averaging minimum wage after camp cost deductions (typically 500 a month in BC), and many rookies spend 1000+ on camp gear, gas, clothes, ect. I was a top rookie for 2 months before quitting, I broke 2000 multiple times on 16 cent land and planted around 2000 more than the next best rookie, yet the wages were not so much more than a full time min wage job. Keep in mind you will sacrifice almost all your free time doing this job.
The biggest appeal of this job is the long hours, which are often 10 hours+, allowing for max EI for 8months (importantly, this is not applicable to full time students). As well, if you know you have multiple free summers, acquiring the skills to be a good tree planter will allow for surprisingly high wages. The best mantra to have going into tree planting is to accept that the first year is an investment for successful subsequent summers, a sentiment that I took for granted.
In terms of experience, you meet some great people out there. If you like the outdoors and outdoor work you will have fun on off days, but there WILL be times were you are miserable. My recommendation is to go into it if you are young and want a soft reset in life, IE you can’t live at your parents house and want to get away from something. It will be the hardest physical job you will ever do, and frankly it will feel like you got scammed constantly.
For sure, would definitely recommend to do for more than one summer! I definitely gained traction in an extended first season. As long as youre willing to put some time and work in, money is there to be made! I do miss it!

Haha thanks man really appreciate that!! Haha yeah each video I'm becoming more and more comfortable! Still a lot of cuts (I learned that I say um a lot and constantly have to collect my thoughts) but I'm trying to keep the thoughts flowing:) hahaha thats awesome hope my trees and portfolio grow!!

i have retierd now after being a lifer 19 seasons bc coast. to be sure it is good money if you work smart. and to be sure it is a way of life that is worth living

I planted more than a million trees ,,,high balled everyone except Ron Dollar on a crazy contract,,,even at 40 years old i highballed everyone,,,,im the reason shovels are short.,,,i can do it today at 51 after being driven over by a truck,,,,hard thing to forget,,,anyway,,,,A tree ,,,a tree is something not like money,,,yes most planters are doing it to pay for school,,,,,i did,,,,,,but a tree ,,,,when you get older and plant for more than the money,,,when you are older,,,you think of them,,,,all the time,,,you care about them like each one was a child that you put on the earth....The micro sites,,,walking on sticks,,,,gluing them to rock on a cliff then doing the backwords blind falllllllll,,,fall on branches,,,load your bags right,,,,dont ever ever shock the roots,,,,,,,,,,no rocket launchers,,,no high density,,,,no planting under an obstacle for the tree to grow straight....do minimums in the slash,,,flag in blue,,,grab the highest thing to flag,,,,take the slash and flag it on your line,,,,, never split the slash,,,it is not cool....when you flag,,do boundaries first,,,bag out at the cash,,,,,,go to the back,,,fill first,,,no dead walks,,,for lessons on speed,,,have water,,,don't drink,,,no pot,,,,no drugs,,,no meat,,,be light,,,,move without shaking your head,,,,be smooth,,,ten a minute in central interior is easy,,,coast is very different,,,,start interior bc.
I'm 60 and set to retire in a couple of years. I'd love to do this!
I worked with a Vet planter last year that was doing checks. He was 65. does it off and on for fun and cash

Just commenting on the clickbait title, your first season is an investment, after that you make real money. And just go to BC, in Ontario your rewarded for sluffing in tree's that would not pass BC specs at any reputable company that pays proper centage for tree's.
Hi Mike! I am in Australia applying for a planting trees job and would like to know more about the job itself. Can you tell me a bit about it? I'm a bit scared because I notice that all the workers are men and I'm afraid I'm going to injure my back. Is there any way to prevent injuries, maybe by wearing a back brace?
My camps were probably 50/50 men and women. I planted with big planters and small planters, I’ve seen great planters in every shape and size. If you have bigger hips, you can have your planting bags rest on your hips without using the arm straps, that would likely prevent some back injuries! My hips were not big enough for this myself :( listen to your body and do your stretches!

you'll make way more money in BC, especially if your in the southern interior/kootneys. Most people making 4-600 a day planting planting 19-30cent land. Also you must've been working for brinkman i believe they're the only company that pays foreman per head. Lots of places pay commission for foreman 12-15% of what the crew plants + what you plant or will pay day rate but generally nothing less the $500.
Come back to the bush but work for someone better, your wallet won't be sorry
No doubt definitely heard of higher paying companies! Im past my planting days now myself still have some friends in it running their own camps now!

i live and work in the uk and this looks like a good thing to do is it worth doing for the money will it cover the rest of the months you dont work?
Most people I know will plant (and take on additional late season contracts) until they are content and then go on EI for the remainder of the year. All depends how good you get and how much you plant and what your financial needs are!
