I was waching a few of you videos last night and I mentioned to my wife that you have so much info that has been helping me out, She said as she has been overhearing the videos, you also have a very easy voice to listen to! I look forward to an answer for a problem I posted in the gerneral discussion area of you channel. Thanks again for an awesome you tube lesson every so often, Very helpful!
Finally! A video that explains the same linkage that's on my old Craftsman, purchased circa 1996. Turns out the metal arm the spring attaches to was bent on mine causing slack in the spring and resulting in the engine to not rev high enough. Bent it back and had to adjust just a tad so it wouldn't over-rev. Runs great again! Thanks!
I have a 10 HP tecumseh on my Yard king snow blower. It dies at full throttle and under load. I have cleaned the carb, used a carb rebuild kit, and I have even pulled the head, lapped and clearanced the valves, (thanks to your videos) New Head gasket and all. Cylinder walls are pristine. The Carb is a fixed jet carb. Starts on the first or second pull, and it idles perfect, but once I throttle it up, it dies. If I catch it dying I can drop the throttle to idle and it slowly recovers
Thanks Dany boy, I was working on an older lawn mower with the same engine and wondering why there is no throttle cable You video really helped me to setup governor linkage.
Also liked and subbed because you just saved me a couple hours of messing around thank you my friend much love from Australia thanks for the simple quick and informative video it is much appreciated
Right so many vids on the 2 spring govoner briggs engines but none on the the one exactly like this is configured i thought for ages i was missing a part cause all the 2 spring set ups link to the air valve govoner thing and the single spring set up like mine and this one doesn't have an air valve govoner 😂 but so glade i found this vid it was a life saver now i know how it all goes together 😂
I do have a question. How do you adjust the governor arm when you replaced it? Are you supposed to rotate the governor clockwise or anticlockwise before tightening up the 10mm nut on the governor arm end? Thanks
I had the same question. The governor arm axis needs to be rotated anticlockwise until it hits a stop before tightening the 10mm nut. As the motor revs up the governor arm will rotate in a CLOCKWISE direction and cause the throttle to close.
Thanks man.. I just got this exact model today for free... it isn't running properly, at all...starts on prime then dies fairly quickly. I flushed out the fuel tank by pouring it out a couple times...lots of grass etc in there...then drained the tank a 3rd time via the fuel line. Fore down the carb...cleaned it out ( no real stuff inside) carb cleaner through all the ports I could. The main jet was partially restricted in the float bowl nut...the smaller " jet" hole into the carb, beside the main jet w the surfaction tube?? Does not seem to go anywhere..can't get carb cleaner through it anywhere I can see. There is a small port on Front of carb, left hand side w brass insert. I can't get cleaner through that, not noticeably anyway...I ran wire through them all as possible., sprayed w cleaner. . The butterfly valve dies was dislodged...jamming the throttle wide open...governor unable to back it off as a result. Got that straightened out as well. Will have to reassemble the carb and install....and hope what I have done clears up its stall issue. Seems to have good compression. It apparently has sat for many years... but blade shows definite wear from prior use. Drive cables seem to be somewhat sticky...may pull them apart and clean etc if I can now get it to run. Seems like this is a Cheapo carb in it... Number stamped says 6150. ?. BTW... the governor spring...where it attaches to the Big hole on rhs top of bracket in video... that bracket Looks like it should pivot to adjust the spring tension...but is at Max tension as it sits in video...and I can't get it to Pivot, not uet/ easily, to let spring Loosen..should I want it to.
After disassemble, clean, repair the Butterfly valve, etc plus flush tank several times through coffee filter... all hooked up.. runs like a charm.. Only issue now is the adjusting bolt for the wheel drive is rusted pretty good...so soaked it w penetratating oil. See if it will free up. Can't apply heat, as the transmission for drive is plastic. Can you service the drive gears etc in the wheel drive "transmission" of these?
Why did they remove manual throttles from mowers? Can a control be added, or are the low-speed holes missing form the carb? I want to mount a newer engine onto my old base, which ahas the throttle control.
I have that exact same engine but on a Snapper with a throttle speed control cable that doesn't go anywhere. I wish I knew what it would take to make that work.
I know im late to the party. QQ. Is the governor supposed to keep the carburetor choke open or closed. I have the same exact model but it only starts if i spray starter fluid into the carb. Mine looks to be open by default.
Do you know why my Briggs and Stratton push mower won't start on a cold start without using starter fluid? I put a new aftermarket carburetor on because when I got the mower the carb was bad. It will start up with the new carb but only with starter fluid on cold starts and will start up when its warm
Are all the linkages for these motors the same. I was given a small MTD rototiller with this configuration but the guy ripped it apart and all that was missing is back with the exception of the linkage arm to the governor. Another great video
I switched from an automatic choke carb to a carb with a primer bulb setup. The problem is the same with both carb setups. I am able to start & run my mower, yet it won't stop missing & the plug is white at the tip of electrode. The intake tube appears solid. Where should I be checking next?
Can someone explain what the lever with the big hole with spring does ? It has no linkage to move it but it pivots and has stops on it and cand be moved by hand
i believe so, i think it uses one of the springs that adjusts the choke based on the ambient temperature of the spring, ie. a running mower for several minutes will have a different spring tension than a cold start mower.
Solved my issue was the governor arm from age was advanced to far toward the carb so there was no resistance or it was bumped. I set so there was some resistance then adjusted the spring at carb for proper RPM all good.
Very informative. I have one just like that one, it started giving meproblems starting last year. I took the carb apart and cleaned it, it looked fine. The primer did not seem to do its job so I suspected the bulb. I also found the gasket used for the primer was damaged so I got a new one. The guy at the sop told me I had to replace the whole plastic assembly but I gave the gasket a try. It helped a little (3-4 cranks instead of 25) but it got worse as the season went on. Any opinion on that?
Good RUclips videos on fixing the plastic plate and/or addressing the fit for the gasket between carb and plastic plate. It's true, sometimes the plates warp and have to be replaced, but, again, there are pretty good videos on addressing that. Additionally, methods of verifying that the primer is actually working (visible fuel coming up tube in carb when primed.
Good Morning, I have an engine that, even though I have gone through the carb, cleaned fuel system, etc, the engine still surges, especially when cold. What can I try next. Thanks
Whats up Donyboy! trying to get this craftsman lawn mower going but it has no linkage springs whatsoever, do you know where I can go to order some? Went to parts direct with no luck.
How can you make an engine generator muffler more quieter? My generator (troy bilt 10.5 k watts) advertises 70 db of loudness. I would love to bring it down about 6 db.
I know this is an old thread...but I just posted a Long comment above in the thread. Got this same machine today. Really appreciate your videos.. have used several to try and sort out issues on snowblower last couple of years. I muddle through.. but I struggle w getting the little things to make it all come together it seems.
Hey donyboy I am working on my first lawn mower I am 16 year old trying to start a landscaping business I was wondering if u had a extra magneto/ ignition coil for a brigs and straton 500 series 5 hp plz help me if u do I will give u my address so u can mail it to me they are just to expensive

You would be a great teacher regarding these small engines. I have learned quite a bit from your videos.
Thank you.

You video really helped me to setup governor linkage.
Great video, as usual. Really appreciate the effort and time you put into these.
Finally a video of the linkage that’s on my Huskee tiller
this is the exact video i needed ty..i have the exact lawnmower but i didnt know where to put the spring
Also liked and subbed because you just saved me a couple hours of messing around thank you my friend much love from Australia thanks for the simple quick and informative video it is much appreciated
sometimes the plastic housing does warp and you need to replace it, you can try 2 gasket, that may help
yes you can buy swapping the setup at the carb from an older engine
thanks for watching
can you put a throttle control on these engines? If so, would you recommend doing this and could you possibly make a video showing how? Thanks!

So what controls the acceleration you want to give your lawnmower when you come up against taller grass and need to give it more power?
It automatically adjusts based on the governor.
Is there a little spring under the black bit where the linkage from the governor attatches ??
Thanks man.. I just got this exact model today for free... it isn't running properly, at all...starts on prime then dies fairly quickly.

Not what I wanted to hear but I was afraid it might be the case. Thanks for the input!
Good concise video
yes

Doc how many plastic parts you find replacing from wear? TU TY best.
Do you have one of the older ones with throttle link and choke ? I cannot find out how to set up the link on mine.
can you replace the primer bulb set up with the choke carb set up off an older quantum?
Still useful, thank you!
So how does the throttle work? I have not throttle and it won’t start. If I shove a screw driver to hold the throttle open it will start and run
Can someone explain what the lever with the big hole with spring does ? It has no linkage to move it but it pivots and has stops on it and cand be moved by hand
Mr Donyboy i was wondering if you work on other tools other than chainsaws and tools like them(weedeaters-leaf blowers)
So is this setup considered an auto-choke? I'm working on one of these now (2002 / 123K02-0315)...
i believe so, i think it uses one of the springs that adjusts the choke based on the ambient temperature of the spring, ie. a running mower for several minutes will have a different spring tension than a cold start mower.
@@the.real.ipatch Thanks so much, Chris!
thanks bobby!
Really usefull video Don! Have yourself a great weekend :)
Hi Dony.
Great tips. Liked,Shared. And added to playlist.
it is the worst case scenario but sometimes that's the only cure
This is the setup i have I'm having an issue with carb set at WOT when starting? What should i be looking for to solve issue?
Solved my issue was the governor arm from age was advanced to far toward the carb so there was no resistance or it was bumped. I set so there was some resistance then adjusted the spring at carb for proper RPM all good.

hey steve how's it going!
Good Morning,
I have an engine that, even though I have gone through the carb, cleaned fuel system, etc, the engine still surges, especially when cold. What can I try next.
Thanks
You're a hero thanks.
What is your opinion of the automatic choke vs. the primer bulb without a choke. Briggs and Stratton motor.
much less problems with just a primer bulb
yes around 3200 rpm
How does the choke turn on and off?
Whats up Donyboy!
trying to get this craftsman lawn mower going but it has no linkage springs whatsoever, do you know where I can go to order some?
Went to parts direct with no luck.

thanks man
Nice clean engine.
Is it worth trying a new main jet screw?
How do you turn these off once they have started?
not bad, same as usual
thanks Don
Thanks I will give it a shot
where shld these small motors run - about 3000rpm?
Do you have a part number for that spring?
Good question mate!
what was your question? just reply here
I know this is an old thread...but I just posted a Long comment above in the thread. Got this same machine today.
Really appreciate your videos.. have used several to try and sort out issues on snowblower last couple of years.
I muddle through.. but I struggle w getting the little things to make it all come together it seems.
sometimes they need a new carb
surprisingly not that many!
thanks
thanks, good vid dony
thank you...
Thanks SSSSSSSSOOOOOOOO much
replace the carb
Hey donyboy I am working on my first lawn mower I am 16 year old trying to start a landscaping business I was wondering if u had a extra magneto/ ignition coil for a brigs and straton 500 series 5 hp plz help me if u do I will give u my address so u can mail it to me they are just to expensive
attach a car muffler to it
Smashing tip :-)
You can NOT blow these motors by over revving them, trust me I've tried!
Wondering, other than the spring, how adjustable is this system?
