What a fascinating exposition of Messian's music'. Thank you.

I've always been amazed and intrigued by Messiaen's pieces, but as a non-organist, find them very difficult to comprehend through their complexities. This introduction expands my understanding, and greatly increases the impact of the music. Thank you.

I loved plying French music on that organ. It may have been built for Bach but it roars with the French.

Thank you, John! Yes, this instrument has been acclaimed for how well it (unexpectedly) suits French music, ever since works by Cesar Frank and Jehan Alain were included in the inaugural concerts in 1965.

Thank you, Canon Kleinschmidt, for an enlightening tour through a piece that has been a touchstone of my musical life since I first heard it as a young chorister in the UK some 40+ years ago. Rarely does a month go by that I don't listen to a recording, but I still learned all sorts of new things from your presentation. Wonderful!

Thank you for this. I used to sometimes play Les Anges for Christmas Eve, but I never had the courage to attempt Dieu Parmi Nous. It is a very great masterpiece, and I will look forward to hearing it. Good wishes to you!

Thank you Mr. Hicks-I fear it will begin well after midnight where you are, but a video will be available soon afterwards!

Superb job Michael. As you may have guessed, I have never truly appreciated Messiaen's music. Thank you for the excellent, in depth introduction. Rest assured, I will be listing to more of Messiaen's music going forward.

I actually listened to your playing of Dieu parmi nous on Christmas Day and it was brilliant! I watched your explanation which was spot on today 12/27/2020. You need to consider more of Discussing and playing great work for the organ . You are a natural and your zest for music shows right through. In closing I wanted to mention that quite a while back Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill they sponsored a recital featuring the piano works of Messiaen with Yvonne Loriod playing. He followed her with his score. at the intermission we turned around and spoke to him at length and he was charming and answered all of our questions. It was a night to remember. She played the vingt regards sur l'infant jesus.

John that is an amazing story! Beginning a few years ago, we have informally offered one all-Messiaen concert every year, since his music seems so suited to the organ and the space-and in December of 2018 the pianist Reinis Zarins presented the "Vingt Regards" from altar platform. Also a night to remember!

Interesting that you juxtapose Daquin and Messiaen: when I heard Messiaen play for Christmas Eve and morning masses in 1984, he played Daquin's G major Noel with variations!

Actually, that's not what Messiaen meant by "non-retrogradable rhythm." He used the term to describe a rhythm that, when retrograded, sounds exactly the same as when direct: in other words, a palindrome rhythm.

Mr. Tikker, you are absolutely correct -- we noted the inaccuracy at the time, but we didn't have time to correct it back then. Thank you for keeping us honest! Messiaen's symmetrical melodies and symmetrical pitch class sets (a.k.a. the "modes of limited transposition") are conceptually similar, and central to his musical thinking. Thanks again for listening, and for your comment.
