NL makes it almost all the way with the key, then the last exit before tunnel man is surrounded by mines and yetis. Having watched this episode, it's really hard to believe the game doesn't have a troll engine.
after struggling a ton with spelunky over the last day or so to even unlock the jungle shortcut, this video inspired me and somehow in about an hour i managed to completely unlock both the ice caves and temple shortcuts.
I actually clapped when you unlocked the shortcut. I have gotten from the begining to that boss in one run several times on the original(I don't have a 360) and that run was not only impressive for you, it was straight up impressive, especially that spider kill, that was either genius or lucky, either way, bravo!
Yep, the hedjet brightens dark levels and stops the ghost from showing up. I think Kali can still summon it if you piss her off though. And you are right about the scepter.
Northernlion you are hilarious and unique, but you also have the most relevant commentary in terms of gameplay. I can imagine you being like a sports commentator or something
I am seriously impressed NL figured out how to beat Olmec by himself... Now that you dont need the key, at every avalible oppritunity, open the locked chest, and try to get $50000. In the jungle, the eye should begin to glow, it happened when you played with Mfox. Begin bombing the area where the eye glows and Viola, you found the black market. And $50k will let you get the single most helpful item in spelunky, even better than the jetpack or cape if you keep up this playstyle.
Oh god watching this was so cathartic after seeing the previous 16 episodes of you failing. Foxman, we thank you. And I guess NL should be thanked too. I guess.
It is the ankh. It revives you one time then breaks. Having it is the only way you can get the hedjet, which in combination with the scepter allows you to enter the city of gold.
Ryan, you can pick up and throw the orange bomb frogs before they go off to use them as a makeshift bomb. It's really useful just for preventing them from blowing up something you need.
Now, that first shopkeeper with the shotgun and the bombs? That's a pretty salvagable lode, which I actually would've risked killing him for. But considering the sticky spot with the giant spider you got in shortly after, and the fact that you made it all the way to Olmec shows there's no faulting you here!! Congrats on the major progress you've worked SO LONG to get!!
I feel like a proud parent watching Northernlion pwn Spelunky. I never thought I'd say this, but it looks like Northernlion could teach me a lesson or two. I'm going to try out a more methodical system as well :D
Olmec is probably a reference to bowser in super mario bros 3 who you have to kill in exactly the same way. Also i noticed when you were hanging off him with the gloves you were fairly safe but he still broke block, so i think the gloves are probably really useful for that fight.
I'm glad you actually figured out how to take out Olmec, if only it was sooner... Great run! Spoiler though: He's not the last boss. Put it this way: He's Sheol. You CAN go to a Cathedral and Chest, only after though, and I'll let you figure out how. ;)
Holy shit, epic run Ryan, grats! Just for future info, the ghost spawns after spending 2:30 in a level. I'm not sure if it spawns on the left or right side that's closest to you or if it involves the exit being between you and him or what exactly.
so in the jungle, there's a chance to encounter a bee hive in the ice caves, there's a chance to encounter an alien ship in the temple there's a chance to encounter.......?

Hey, NL, as far as I know, damsels/dogs don't take fall damage, damage from the whip, or damage from enemies. (That's the way it was in the PC version, at the very least.) I imagine those properties transition to the XBLA version.

A good strategy for no shortcut runs. Try to get to the Black Market with a lot of money. Don't need to buy the Ankh unless going for the City of Gold. Buy all the supplies you need at the Black Market.
I'm expecting Michael Fox to come back to Spelunky and be horrible at it, now. I think Northernlion performed some kind of voodoo ritual to take Michael's Spelunky talent and add it to his own.

I was using Notherlions last char , than i realized i was getting bad luck. So i changed to the character he is using right now (this was one episode before he got to the worm level for first time). I got the key to the temple! He is indeed a lucky charm!

Teddy Bear Man is my favorite Spelunky character! And he does kind of resemble NL
I just realized how similar that ghost is to the wind in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games. They both boot you out after awhile.

Ryan when you get to the final boss you got to get the boss to the lava,when its close to the end your suppose to jump on top of him.
NL- I got the key all the way to the Ice Caves! It felt great to finally be done with that and now the game seems a little easier.
You finally figured out the true secret of this game - you have plenty of time. You don't need to rush. 2 minutes 30 seconds is an eternity.
