    My father in law has that same fiskers and I used it at their property last summer cutting some rounds and i LOVED it! A month ago I got 5 trees cut down. Fir trees all between 65-70ft And I needed a splitter axe. I got the stihl axe. That same one you got. The only reason I got it was because my father in-law already had the fiskers and the stihl had the weird cap on the top that seemed like a great addition and it was stihl with German steel. Almost 2x the price of the fiskers. Honestly, the stihl looks better and it has a replaceable "custom" handle but I think the fiskers does a better job. The fiskers handle is a permanent manufactured handle but with the lifetime warranty. If I could do it again I would probably get the fiskers. And I'm 6'7" 290lb ex college OL for size reference.

    After four years since making this video, I still haven’t used my splitter, and I haven’t picked up the Stihl since this video. I’ll take the husky with me out in the woods, as it is shorter and easier to pack with me. The poll on the husky is much better for driving plastic felling wedges.

    I have a fiskars 25 my kids got me for Christmas a cpl years ago, I was thinking why did they get me an axe lol then I seen vids on here showing the quality of it and that it has lifetime warranty. I thought I lost it and borrowed my father n laws to split some wood and was having a hard time splitting the wood and then I found mine and wow what a difference! The fiskars went right through it like nothing...my boys gave me a gift that I'll have a lifetime :)

    I use a Fiskars X27 and love it. Man its an awesome splitting axe. There are times I still need an 8lb maul and wedge to bust a huge piece of red or white oak but after that the fiskars is something else. And it will also split large oak blocks that you wouldn't think it would stand a chance at. Best part is you can swing it all day splitting wood.

    Nice video. I too got all 3 of my friskars at TSC on clearance for about half regular price !!(What a buy !) You described all aspects of splitting correct and to the point ! Good job. BTW, when I compare the steel and sharpening to my other swede steel it is JUST as hard and holds up just as good. I've put the all through the paces and can't find a fault with the fiskars.

    • @Freakingstang
      @Freakingstang  6 лет назад

      I don't know where the soft steel remarks come from. 10 years of 5-6 cord a year haven't wore this out. sure I've dinged the edge a few times in that time splitting stuff on the ground, but is by no means soft. I do that to my Gransfors or the Husky, or the wetterling I have, they'll all fair the same fate.

  • @apuuvah
    @apuuvah 6 лет назад +1

    Fiskars for me, it gets the job done as well or better than any axe out there. But, a Gränsfors Bruks has all the wonderful history, heritage and craftsmanship behind it and it is as good. Both get the job done just fine, but I would be more proud of the Gränsfors. I want both. If I had WAY more money, I would buy EVERY Gränsfors model EVER made. And A few as gifts! You cant beat the hundreds of years of heritage. Your grandads grandad used a similar axe making a living and housing for his family in the wilderness.

    Some impressive looking axes you've got there.Doing a great job all of them. Know fiskars well, used it hard for more then ten years and is still a no problem tool. That you cannot replace the handle is correct but when the handle doesn't break that wil be the least of your worries. The splitter I'm using has a shorter handle, don't remember seeing the long handled ones when I bougth this, but this one makes it easier for me to swing it real hard and aim more precise. Often very near or right at where the wood just cracked at the last blow.Feels very lazy and efficient at the same moment.

    You could see the Fiskars make the cracks in the round on each hit. Of course once that first piece splits off, then you are off to the races. It seems the Fiskars did a better job of splitting off the pieces as they would fly off. The Stihl and Husqvarna didn't do that to the same degree.
    I have an older Fiskars 28" splitting axe and it works great for splitting wood.

    • @caperi79

      +bwillan Probably because of the longer handle. In my case I´m not very tall and I bet I crack the round with the stihl splitter. Which I own and I use. As the man says, he is used to thge fiskars, and both the stihl and husqvarna are better for splkitting on a log.

    I do really like my Iltis Oxhead, which is identical to your Stihl. It is a great compromise of feel and efficiency and is more enjoyable to use. But these modern, lightweight splitting axes are wildly efficient for all-day use. Simply comes down to what experience you're after. I use the Oxhead until I start running out of daylight ;-D

    • @paulhomsy2751
      @paulhomsy2751 2 года назад

      "But these modern, lightweight splitting axes ..." They aren't lightweight. The S 2800 weighs 6.19 lbs for example which isn't lightweight. They aren't 8 lbs mauls but for their weight they beat anything of equal weight. They're very well designed. Their head geometry is excellent.

    • @kovacs4577
      @kovacs4577 2 года назад

      @@paulhomsy2751 My Fiskars X25 is much lighter than the Iltis (~4 lb vs 6.5 lb heads) and splits more efficiently on all but the larger rounds (>24-28" or so). The larger X27 (36-inch handle and ~4 lb head) will split better than my Iltis on any size round - not as enjoyable to use though, IMO. I think we are in agreement. The head design of the Fiskars is hard to beat.

    Great video! Thanks for doing this. We have a Fiskars X27 and split 4-8 cords of maple, fir and alder each year depending on what's available and what we need. We love it! It replaced a standard 8 lb splitting maul that we're glad to have retired. After using the Fiskars we don't know how we ever survived using the standard maul. I was surprised to see how short the handles were on the Husqvarna and Stihl . Do they offer longer handle choices? The extra handle length allows more striking momentum and it keeps you safely back from the cutting edge. The X27's lightweight head and handle saves lots of energy and the good head design really splits the wood. A half dozen of our friends and family now own their own Fiskars X27 after giving ours a try.

    At the end of the day, the Fiskars doesn't look like it would wear you out as much as the others I would imagine. It gains more leverage, and speed, as opposed to the thud of the other two. Lighter weight, and longer handle. It just looks like you're working harder with the other two. Am I wrong?

    Let me tell you a little trick. On them big logs pick it up and slide one of your maul Handles under it all the way across try to get close to Center and then set the log down and then the part of the log the sitting off the ground that's what you want to hit when it hasn't got the ground under it it'll bust off a lot easier and that's coming from a pro not really but I got a splitting maul for Christmas when I was 8 years old and I've been at it ever since and I'm 42 and I guarantee I can out split any man I'm addicted to the sound of that wood cracking

      @richter75 a competition vid, how you want to do this? I'm interested. I started at the age of 9 and last summer I became 50. 41 years of experience, beat that 😊

    Thanks for the comparison vid, very helpful. I use the X27 for all my splitting on the ground out in the woods, it splits fantastically, it’s relatively light, it rarely gets stuck, and is easy to wiggle out if it does, but it really gives me really bad tingling in the hands and aching elbows from the vibration. (I think I’m unlucky in that I seem to get HAVS/vibration whitefinger quite badly from too much chainsawing in my youth)
    I was hoping the Stihl might be a good compromise axe with the wooden handle, unfortunately the handle isn’t as long (so not ideal for splitting on the ground) and the head looks similar to the S2800, which gets stuck way too much. Our 2800 stays by the woodpile in the shed for chopping block work on small rounds, but to be honest I find it a pain to use with the balance and excessive sticking.
    Curious to know why exactly you haven’t used the Stihl since? Too short? Too sticky? How are the transmitted vibrations through the handle compared to the X27? Appreciate it’s not something that bothers many people, but for those of us who get it, it’s a big factor to consider when doing lots of rounds! Thanks 🤙

      I use a puck. This one I’ve used for a decade or so. It was the only one available at the time, but now there are hundreds.

      I have heard good things about the S2800 but my preference is a longer handle like the X27. If you make a S2800 with a 32" handle I would consider giving it a swing. I would submit my suggestion to your website if I knew where... Thanks.

      I agree. I'd buy a longer handle husq axe in a heartbeat. It would match the line of saws I use. 👍

    Inhave the fiskars and the Husqvarna. I favor the Husqvarna. As he said they all work. I like to support my local Husqvarna little mom and pop shop. So i buy Husqvarna. But the fiskars is like he said the best for the money.
