Hey bro, fellow vitiligo person Was able to keep most of my color used to have similar coloring to you , still have it but it's in check. Thank you Jesus. I do a bunch of things but I have found 4 things that were the most helpful. 1. Move out of the city. Too stressful. 2. Go gluten free. Reduces your inflammation, maybe it's not wheat for you but it is for a lot of people. 3. Eat red meat. You need the iron. 4. Get a light treatment lamp. It's expensive but it heals you. I do other stuff and avoid other stuff but I feel like I'm lecturing let me know if you want to know more.
I am half black, half chinese and I would not watch this if you paid me. Really tired of Hollywood and wish I could turn back the clock 10 years.
I occasionally hear about the magical black person trope and never really thought about it but I think I can see the thread that got twisted into this mess. Maybe I'm wrong, and maybe initially it was something else, probably depends on your own perspective, but the common story I see from converted racists is, when they actually had to interact with a black person or that person saved them in some way that changed their world view. So on one hand I could see the trope representing that. But this seems to be taking the negative interpretation and somehow making it worse.
This movie brought the country together because it's getting panned by everyone.
Somebody should buy the rights to the title. It's so good! And people were expecting like a black Harry Potter or like a League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I'd go to see THAT movie
Exactly 🙌🏾it should had been a comedy added on to Harry Potter / league of gentlemen
See! That is exactly what I wanted. If you’re gonna use this title make it count
We all wanted that not this bs
Like the Key & Peele wizard school skit but full movie length!
Yes very much wanted black harry potter
I think another that hurt the movie is that "the magical negro" is pretty much a dead trope nowadays. Hell, there were people who saw the trailer and didn't even realize it was a trope. They had no idea what they were looking at.
That’s definitely an interesting perspective
I don't feel like the trope was racist to begin with. It was clumsy storytelling, but still an attempt at having positive portrayals of black people in movies.
@@ethanmoon3925naw guy it's racist , and it's still around. But the movie is satire , good or bad satire is up to the individual though
@@ethanmoon3925 Yeah, I don't think it was racist to begin with, but some people just want to label everything racist.
I will not watch this. This movie shouldn't even exist.
Agreed!
I just watched it. It was actually a good movie.
It should exist, and people should be uncomfortable. Change the country, don't change the art.
Even bad art has the choice to exist dude. This movie sucks but I’m glad people have the right to make this
Those here who are disagreeing: I get your arguments that art is supposed to make people feel comfortable but that doesn't excuse this movie for the way it goes about it's offensive approach to black people. It also doesn't give this an excuse for a movie like this fo treat black people like crap in a disrespectful manner.
As a white person that saw this. I agree with you 100%. The whole premise felt so fucking weird. I was like how is this helping their cause again. Also I would barely call this a satire because they're constantly telling you the purpose of the movie very bluntly. American Fiction does everything this movie was trying to achieve.
Yeah there was nothing satirical about this. It was very straight forward. American Fiction is phenomenal!
According to the writer it was not to “help the cause.” The reaction to expectations to film and what the actual film is about his comments below seems justified.
“Libii says he wrote the film to give a voice to his unique perspective as a biracial man living in America. While attacking the “magical Negro” trope, he says it was important to give a voice to Black men that don’t fit the stereotypes often seen in film and television. Libii and Smith joked that The American Society of Magical Negroes is an ode to the struggle of the gentle straight Black man that often is overlooked in conversations of racial bias.”
Rename it "Clickbait: The Movie." Cuz if i knew what it really was was a rom-com written/directed by a white-passing biracial dude who married a white bitch and is basically saying "this is y'alls problem cuz i only hafta deal with black issues when its convenient for me to advance my career.." id have never bothered watching🙄
Really enjoyed American Fiction.
@@cgpcgp3239it’s funny because I was just talking to a brother about this yesterday…..Being an individual and having your values is one thing, but are you not apart of a COMMUNITY?……Why not find ways to relate to and contribute to US?…..WE are a beautiful and diverse people, with plenty to learn from and contribute…..I don’t agree with this “awkward Black male” trope either, especially when our community is so welcoming and you can find your niche almost anywhere……We can’t be stuck in that in 2024.
As a author, who is African American I wrote a fantasy in high-school nearly over a decade and a half ago with black characters. It was a series of books that I wanted to publish. I'm currently trying update it for this time and age.
I do know when I wrote it I wanted to see characters who didn't fall under what I see in the street or in school, but characters who had an adventure.
I would love to see some black kids just go on an adventure!
I'd LOVE something like that! 🙌🏽
I hope you get a book/s published.
I’m a writer myself and I would love to see your books get published it will probably be better than this movie
Jordan Peele could have pulled this satire off I think. Made it funny, smart and introspective.
Agreed
Nah . Hes racist as hell
Key and peele had a magical Negro skit before this movie was even announced
Essentially what this is about is Kobi, the director, sharing his identity Crisis with the world.
Pretty much!
Spot on and he isn't even Black. His mother is white. What a nerve!
And in the end he said I pick I white girl over the well being of all black people😂
I firmly believe the philosophy that “there are no bad ideas, just poor execution,” but oof, this idea would be a tough one to make really work.
I'm with you there.
Key and Peele managed it in a five minute skit, tho…lol
Just saw it. Everything he said dead accurate.
American Fiction or Origin are much better uses of time on subjects of race
“Limited perspective on blackness”…Exactly! This ain’t no black movie. Don’t put that on us.
This.
Both the writer/director and the lead actor are products of interracial unions. Both men have black fathers and white mothers. Many biracials raised by a WHITE mom and a BLACK dad have a limited perspective on blackness.
THANK YOU!!! I had the same expectation when the trailer was getting dragged online that there might be a misdirect, and it might have something to actually say or a deeper message that wasn't evident.
Nope! What is the point of highlighting a problematic trope if you're just going to play into it and reinforce it?
What a waste of time and resources. 😑😑😑
Bingo! Like what was the reason?! And then for it to have that big speech at the end like they were actually saying something was wild!
Leftist progressive racism at its finest
The park scene had so many people around me looking at their phones or knocked out asleep!! Great review and keep up the great content brother!!
The exact same thing happened in my theater. I was sitting next to a friend he was like why is this scene still going? And the lack of a score made it so much worse. Thank you watching! I truly appreciate it 🙌🏾
I was expecting like Inner City Hogwarts, or an African “Now You See Me.” Not… This. 🤨
Man that’s exactly what I wanted
Why do people keep saying this. You thought a movie with this title ( which is actually a well known trope/stereotype in movies) would be black Harry Potter? That's kinda worrisome bro. And did you say "African " ?
It's very insightful hearing your perspective on this, Kenny. Never stop doing what you do
Thank you! That seriously means a lot 🙌🏾
I was intrigued when I first saw the title then I saw the trailer and lost all interest completely.
Yup! The title got me excited and then the trailer destroyed all of that. The movie is somehow even worst than I could have possibly imagined
Damn never seen you rip a movie a new one like this. I was scared to see this because it sounded exactly what I feared. Plus, the filmmaking is bad? Jeeezus
Bro I’ve never been more offended by a movie and then for the filmmaking to be bad… all around terrible
It's odd. Movies like this need to be made to prove how unnecessary movies like this are needed. I will be passing.
That’s a good choice. Save your time and money.
The magic looks pretty in the trailer looked good. But I had no interest in seeing it. I immediately thought of the Key and Peele sketch and it made me rematch the sketch.😂
Key & Peele definitely did it better
Black people please do your part, by NOT SEEING THIS MOVIE.
This.
And please white people : do the same...
yep
"No Spoilers"
as if any of us were ever gonna watch it to begin with LOL
LOL
Thank you for your honest review I’ve seen many reviews on this movie from black to white and everyone is the same feelings about This film . I only scene one person say it’s a great film and it’s giving the studio paid them to give a good view
Wow I have yet to see anything positive about this movie. I’m actually curious enough to watch one just to see how that could happen.
This was my 1st introduction to your channel and I am hooked for life my friend!!
That’s awesome 👏🏾 Thank you for taking this ride with me. I can promise you I also have positive reviews on my channel too 😅. This one just struck a chord
This had to be satire to work at all. It's the best way to break down a known trope and explore its themes.
I was so hoping it would be satire
Unfortunately they didn’t do a good job at the satire part at all.
It is satire
Another movie that brought the internet together. Wild as hell.
Good or bad
Lol word
I was so excited to run out and see this movie but based off your review I will wait. Disappointed that the script did not deliver.👎🏾😕
Yeah wait for streaming if you decide to check it out
Good video may the LORD keep blessing you & yours!!!!!!! Hew you have the views. Where are the subscribers???
Thank you! This video has been very successful at bringing in new subscribers and I’m thankful for that 😊
Let's all just stream an actual good movie about black people doing dope magic stuff- Fast Colors.
Yooo I remember seeing trailers for that years ago! I might do just that. Thank you for the recommendation!
I had to same reaction. I was like who was this for cause it wasn’t for black people and it does nothing to speak to white people or require them to reflect on the actions towards black people.
Then I saw who made it and was like oh yeah they don’t know the American black experience at all.
LIKE AT ALL, AT ALL. This was just a failure at all levels.
I think they miss understood black people the world over
After hearing about it, of course I had to see a review. Silver lining though is I found your channel, excellent review and clearly thought out. Will definitely be checking you out for future reviews
Thank you! I truly appreciate the compliment
The fact that the powers that be greenlit this BS in the 1st place should tell you how far one has to go to get authentic unique black American fiction to be taken seriously. I mean forreal I know its supposed to a cultural satire but whats truly disheartening is when you realize the movie is quite happy and content with just reinforcing its granular worldview not just of black people but people in general.
Spot on!
Great review! Saved me time and money. Thanks man.
Absolutely! Thank you for watching. It’s not taken for granted 🙌🏾
They need to just do to this movie what they did with Suicide Squad. Just totally retcon this one, take the title, recast the whole crew, and make a superior version.
Agreed
Great review, thanks. I appreciate that you criticized the bad filmmaking, and not merely the story.
Thank you & thanks for watching! 🙌🏾
That's unfortunate to hear, I thought this IDEA had some potential but it is sad to know it was not handled right
My conspiracy theory is that studios green light these clearly bad movies by a Black artist to use as proof to not back Black movies in the future.
Ya know… that’s not a bad thought experiment
When I first heard the title, I was thinking a Key and Peele style satire where suave Black Victorian superheroes were constantly having to save white people from themselves in a funny and lightheared jab at old tropes. That might not be a good idea either, but I think it would have probably done better than what they made.
That’s essentially what this tried to be. It’s not good.
Keep up the Good work bro! 💪
Thank You!
I was hoping this was a tongue and cheek roasting of the concept.
Same
Excellent discussion!
Thank you 🙏🏾
Congrats on such a succesful video!
Thank you!
Thanks for your review.
You’re welcome 😊 Thank you for watching!
The only person who could've made this movie right would be Spike Lee, or maybe Jordan Peele.
I can see that.
I saw this movie advertising somewhere and my instant thought was this has to be a great movie to have a wild title like this. I'm glad I didn't watch it but I thought it would have been something like The Magicians tv series
@KennySparksYT I'm curious to hear your thoughts on a movie that received little to no recognition whatsoever: The Angry Black Girl And Her Monster.
I’ll have to look that one up
😮 When I saw the preview and heard the name of the movie my neck cracked.😂
I do not blame you at all sis. Don't waste your time.
Watching this while i am on my walk! And i am so sorry you had to deal with this movie.
Hey I appreciate that. I need to start going on more walks myself.
@@KennySparksYT trust me it's great! Especially with the good weather conning out soon
What was David Alan Grier thinking???? Oh yeah a paycheck. Thank you for the thoughtful review, I was excited about seeing it at first then saw a preview in the theater and had some reservations about, now I probably won't go.
Yeah this was definitely a paycheck for David Alan Grier. An unfortunate one. I really wanted it to be black wizards and witches being cool but instead we got...this. Thanks so much for watching! I greatly appreciate it.
I'm happy to see how your channel has grown. Your reviews are always incredible 🙌🏾
Thank you so much Devon! That really means a lot.
Wow. I had no idea this movie existed and my jaw dropped just seeing the title. The only way I could imagine the concept actually working would be if it was super subversive and angry, like "Sorry To Bother You." But this clearly is not that. Ick.
Yeah it just didn’t work at all
Awesome review Kenny. This should have been a movie with a message but instead it was so bad. So so bad... You hit all the points on why this one sucked so bad. at 4:52 I died laughing. A great edit on highlighting that craziness of this movie. Like you just said that and it happened in the movie. Keep up the work Kenny, you crushing it!
Much appreciated y'all! I loved the conversation y'all had about it on your live stream last night. Man I wish this movie didn't exist but it's doing wonders for my channel 🤣
@@KennySparksYT it's a bad movie with a bad message, but at least in your video you discuss that. So if there is one good thing from this movie is that film guys like you get to talk on why media like this is bad on a movie making level and on a race level too. This is a great video it deserves all the love.
Honestly when I saw that they were making this. I thought they were doing something like a spin on the Sorcerers Apprentice. Then I saw the trailer...
Yeah the trailer was the first sign
This is the type of movie American Fiction was making fun of.
1000%
Nice Review. Do you think this film would've worked in 2020 with the we understand now crowd?
To be honest with you I don’t remember what the We Understand Crowd is
@@KennySparksYT The post George Floyd crowd of people who just started to understand what racism was from that aspect, instead of understanding layers.
What’s crazy is the actor’s are amazing, talented individuals. But I see where you’re coming from.
glad I randomly found this youtube channel ... great review... you're very charismatic
Thank You! I truly appreciate that. I hope I can live up to it going forward 🙌🏾
This movie is the PERFECT personification of the phrase "Who is this for?"
Accurate!
White person here. I thought the ads were intriguing, but I was also expecting a twist. How disappointing. I'll skip this movie. Thanks for your review!
Zero twist at all unfortunately
Satire is extremely difficult to do well. I haven't seen a good satire since "In the Loop" from 2009 and that includes "American Fiction" which I thought was a bit disappointing. I am curious about how bad this movie is and will definitely wait until it's free on streaming. I'm not spending a single extra cent on it.
That’s a good choice. I’d definitely save your money on this one
I seriously thought this movie was a joke until I realized it was real!! This is gonna bomb and fall harder than Loqueesha 2019!!! 😂
Great Review...Thx u
Thank you for watching 🙌🏾
The premise was good and smart. The premise had a lot of potential. But they messed up, turning it into an office romance that pokes fun at facebook and instagram...
Yeah taking the focus off the main point was a huge mistake
It seems that if you do it from the right direction, you can do pretty much anything
I am boycotting this movie period
Probably a good idea to enjoy something, anything else tbh
I haven't seen but you're commentary on on it really got through to me
I appreciate that! 🙌🏾 I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Omg just watch first 15 min and came straight to RUclips bc I thought I was the only one in shock 😮
Yeah it’s pretty bad lol
😂 I’d like your opinion and review of my trilogy, ‘Carlovy Musicc’s Friend Zone’ (Romantic Comedies), available on Tubi.
You got a whole trilogy? 😳 Congrats man
This film sounds really interesting. Im sorry you did not like it. I have not heard of this movie. Great review my friend ❤❤
As a woman, I feel like we are aware of our surroundings, maybe a bit more than men. Like my boyfriend won't notice suspicious people or make note of faces, outfits, etc. When I'm alone in a sketchy area, I'm looking for an exit plan. Not saying men don't do that or get assulted, but it's different. I'm not gonna make a movie about it. There's enough media discussing it. That's how I feel about this movie - if this is your message, then I think other things say it better.
That’s an interesting perspective to consider
How does this movie stack up against Samurai Cop???
The only thing I remember about Samurai Cop is the poster
😂 I could lmfao every freakin time I hear this title 🤣🤣🤣
😂
A lot of people say it's a harry Potter clone but this movies biggest mistake is the enemy can't use magic so what exaclty is stopping the magic users from just using magic to kill them in harry potter the main enemy uses magic too so it's more of an even fight.
A lot of people lied to you
How much do they pay people to sit through this movie?
They don’t
Seems like a thought-out review with a lot of discussion to offer. I don't think I'll be seeing this movie just because it takes itself too seriously and moves into the ignorant racist zone. Subbing to see where you go man. Good video
Thanks for the compliment, Richard! I'd definitely save your money on this one. American Fiction or the more recent Love Lies Bleeding is a much better use of your time.
I agree Kenny
Thanks for watching, Ricko!
I would love to see you do a review on the movie "Origin" by Ava Duvernay.
You're in luck 😊: ruclips.net/video/L1G1utsqJVc/видео.html
Your amazing, I watched your review and I think you were on point. I've watched several interviews with Ava Duvernay regarding "Origin" and she really put her blood and sweat into it. I was was hoping it would do better in the American theaters but I still feel it will still stand the rest of time. Your reviews are right on and keep up the good work.
I feel like, America has just been Emily in Parised
“I understood that reference” - Captain Rogers
I dig your perspective. 🎉
Thanks!
Love this channel bro. My biggest issue (Without having seen it) was when you said each "Magical Negroe" is assigned a white person. LIKE WHAT? If you have seen American Fiction (Cringy but amazing movie) it captures that tone deafness of hollywood. The whole "We support black people but will continue to stereotype them/only use them when they are popular" mentality. Kinda like how everyone movie involving a mexican american back in the day had to show them all as cholos or gardeners.
Much appreciated! I’ve seen American Fiction and absolutely love that movie. It’s so much better at communicating an important message
Great vid🏆
Thank You 🙏🏾
The fact that there is no musical score in this movie says alot.
What film composer in their right mind would compose music for a film that is so shallow and edgy?
I've watched Undercover Brother so many times, but it's hard to see this as a spoof movie with all the white h8 right now.
That’s a perspective for sure
@@KennySparksYTI just watched it, and yeah, it's basically feels like Undercover Brother.
As someone who isn’t white nor black I have no idea how I would even go and watch this movie lol. Like I wouldn’t even feel
Comforts me going to the box office and asking for a ticket.
Understandable
Great video! I’m glad you posted this because I really didn’t know anything about the movie other than the title. I’m sorry you had to suffer but thank you for taking the bullet for the rest of us lol
Thanks for watching, Jeff! And yeah this one was a huge misstep but thankfully there will be a ton of good movies coming out soon.
I love Sparks review because he actually reviewed the movie, not just the script like others. Script sucks, story telling boring, acting bland, cinamatography bad, missing background music, etc. He broke down every aspect of this flick, way better job than anyone else. Sparks review was better scripted and read than the movie.
Sparks should go to Hollywood and become a writer/director, then maybe we'll get movies people actually want to watch.
I appreciate the compliment!
Like Snakes on a Plane its just an idea that was pitched and had no thought further than that. Except people like Snakes on a Plane.
That’s a wild analogy but I’m following.
@@KennySparksYT lol thats fair. Im just thinking both were produced based solely off memes and tropes
Wasn’t this key and peele bit?
Key & Peele did something similar but as usual they got it right
Someone in Hollywood needs to fired
Genuine question, why don’t you use a stand or something to put your mic on, instead of holding it yourself?
It’s what makes me feel comfortable.
@@KennySparksYT Alright, to each their own, thanks for the prompt reply.
Its incredible that people have judged this movie on a trailer...just watch it today I thought it was a great film very nuanced beyond the surface level plotline folks a hooked on.
I watched the trailer, went in with an open mind and still found it to be absolutely wretched
@@KennySparksYT for me this film was metaphor about dealing about handling micro aggressions which is a massive health problem for people of colour and highlighting the solutions between old fashioned techniques and present day climate of being upfront.
We saw this in full effect last week via shannon sharpe amanda seales interview when he tried to deny her own experience of racism by defending a white person he has never met 🤣
The character leads art work is the key in this film: resonate with his artwork and art process, you will love the movie
As for the romantic aspect it's reminded me of Barry Jenkins earlier films like Medicine for Melonconly
Also saw strong connection with meet Joe black, another brilliant film that has been misunderstood
For some reason people want this film to be something that it's not.
The film biggest flaw has been the way it was been mis-marketed
I would give it a strong 7.5 but 10/10 for making a film around this movie trope.
Im 💯 this film will be seen in a different light in the years to come.
Mark my words...
American history will look back on this as a black spot on the conscience of the entire American population ✌️♥️💯
I certainly hope not lol. This movie should never be looked at again
What happened to the movies where the black and white guy are best buddies
🤷🏾♂️
I and Spike Lee as well, think this trope has been around since the "talkies" began. It has been a crutch used by film writers and producers to humanize genies and fairy godfathers and godmothers.
All this crutch did was lend a maudlin bent to the film. Usually to elevate the sad crushing emotion of the protagonist during a time when all seemed lost and unrecoverable.
Better plot and script writing should be the beginning of the end to the Magical Negro/ess (The legend of Bagger Vance and Ghost with Whoopi Goldberg), Mexican (The Milagro Bean Field Wars) and other such tropes.
Let us hope so before people begin once again to rub the tops of our heads for good luck.
Speaking facts!
4:54 just about made me lose my shit laughing
God this movie sounds like a trainwreck. I saw the trailer and thought "Okay there HAS to be more to this premise we're not seeing, this sounds so outrageous that there must be some subversion of it in the movie." But to hear that there isn't... yikes.
Unfortunately it’s straight forward as can be
Man, I was with it when I first saw the trailer, at least the beginning of it...........but as soon as it veered into tropey rom-com looking sh*t, I was like "Nah, I'm good."
Yeah I was concerned as soon as I saw the rom com angle
Yeah every review I’ve seen says it’s awful so that settles that on giving this a chance.
Yeah save your money man
The state of America is in dire straights.
Always has been
I think it could of worked, despite the fact that it's a dead trope, if it was executed better. But they sort of just meandered and went with a romance plot out of nowhere... Like, why tho?
This exactly!
Ima super movie guy but when I seen this trailer last year pretty much exposing the whole movie I instantly said NO THIS WILL NOT BE GOOD and the title alone is nasty work. Glad I didn’t see it
You saved yourself from a bad time for sure
@@KennySparksYT yeah I’m good bro they green light everything
