    When Gaby retired in 96 she said she had been thinking about it for 3 years. I think the MaryJoe loss at the French in 93 pretty much ended her career. Her coach Dennis Ralston said she didn’t come out of her room for days after that match as she was completely despondent and he felt that she never again had the fire to win after this match. He knew her more than anyone. Her team also fired her sports psychologist when he said Gaby just lost her desire. It’s a shame, but she grew to truly feel pain on a tennis court from 93 on. Juan Nunez was fun and demotivated her a bit, but Gaby was never the same.

    Sabatini's reached the semi-finals here at the AO on a few occasions but somehow never gets to the damn Finals! No wonder her rankings dropped as she no longer has that "desire" to play tennis as she once did & decided to retired. Apart from her good looks she was also a very talented player!

      I believe this was the worst surface for both women as their overspun groundstrokes sat up to be attacked and hit. Unlike clay where the court was also slow and bouncy but took them off in a far more effective way.

    This match, and then the final, showed the different talent levels of Sabatini, Sanchez-Vicario, and Steffi Graff. Graff beat Sanchez-Vicario in the final with the same ease that Sanchez-Vicario beat Sabatini in the semis. Shows how Graff was on a level far above everyone else in the first half of the '90s, with the exception of Monica Seles.

    • @moviefan4life166

      Gaby developed a severe illness after her win over Jana in the quarters and was a bit questionable to even play this match. Mary Carillo said Arantxa is the last person you want to play if your not feeling well and she was right. These two had a weird rivalry. There were some long matches but also some very one sided ones. Gaby killed Arantxa in Sydney in 92 losing 2 games and lost 4 games in Rome in 93. And Arantxa won convincingly here and fairly convincingly in the Lipton in the 92 finals. In this match Gaby did look exhausted and she seemed unwilling to grind out the points. She just sort of made lots of errors and came in to end the points quickly on half hearted approach shots. In my opinion her best results against Arantxa came when she served more aggressively and was willing to grind out and develop the point and mix in deep, hard approach shots. In this match Arantxa was always inside the baseline it seemed and Gaby got poor depth.

    I remember being so disappointed in the way Gaby played this match. It seemed like she wasn't interested and had no game plan at all. To ASV's credit, she played very well. But it was a walk in the park because Gaby never showed up.

    gaby at one point had a decent serve at the mid-end of '88, watching her play was a complete nightmare. I grew up on clay in Rio de Janeiro so my game is very mirrored to gaby's. Her height should've given her the advantage in many aspects of the game but her laziness was infuriating!!

    • @zeddeka
      @zeddeka 4 года назад

      I think the problem with her serve at that point was that she was getting a very low percentage of serves in, and was having to rely on her second serve. I think they switched service motions once again in an attempt to try and get more first serves in and take some pressure off her second serve.

    I think this match illustrated the limitations in both players' games. Both of them were essentially 'spoilers' who relied on 'spoiling' their opponents' games with different spins and retrieving. Neither player really had a weapon with which they could seize control of points with and win matches with. They essentially relied on their opponents' errors.

    • @jonnyjobes3621
      @jonnyjobes3621 7 лет назад +3

      I agree with what you're saying in that neither player had a traditional 'weapon' as in a big first serve or huge return. But isn't defence a weapon in itself if you can stay in a rally several shots longer than the average opponent and therefore produce an error?

    • @ralphbourgeois5875
      @ralphbourgeois5875 6 лет назад +3

      You can but if you are playing Graf or Seles the errors wont come, you cant rely on errors to win the match except occasionaly Graf on a day her forehand is badly misfiring.

      @CJJAK37 5 лет назад +3

      Wow so ASV won 759 Career matches due to errors from her opponents . Woah that’s a lot of errors that is . So she never hit a backhand winner , a heavy smash winner , a volley put away, an ace . She simply showed up every time and waited for an error. Haha boy every win she had , her opponent must have been total shit . Did I mention she had 759 wins on tour. But all down to her opponents errors. Yep nothing to do with ASV. 🙄🙄🙄

      @@ralphbourgeois5875 OMG Have you seen the h2h between Sabatini and Graf? It was actually Sabatini the one in control in half of their many marches, which she eventually won. All that by mixing effects, going to the net and playing amazing volleys. It was not only in the US Open. She defeated Graf ten or twelve times. She also beat the best tSeles several times.
      As for Arantxa, she had and extraordinary backand and her speed and mental strength had not been seen before. Also take into account the racquets they played with. Tthey were fantastic players. Tennis is not only about smashing a ball, man.

      I agree in general but I also don't think rebound ace is good for her game at all. Then again the same is true for Sanchez Vicario, but she was on the up and up by now, and Sabatini had already been on decline for close to 2 years by then.

      @@CJJAK37 In fairness you are always playing a much tougher opponent in the semis. Particularly in womens tennis where the depth is usually questionable. Often the quarters to the semis is when you first get the big jump in quality. Furthermore Gaby was the 3rd or 4th best player at a given time almost her entire career. Heck that is reflected in her rankings, where she didn't rise above #3 for even a single week ever, despite being a match from #1 a copule times. I agree 3-15 is still bad and dissapointing, but there are reasons that make it make a bit more sense.

      @CJJAK37 6 лет назад +3

      T H perhaps . It’s very strange that she lost 15 slam semifinals. She could beat the best outside of the majors but when it came to the 4 GS, she seemed very content to bow out in the semifinals . Nerves! Confidence! Or just no desire. It’s a mystery. She had the game to be at least a 5 slam winner

      Dustin Gabe I actually agree with you mate but the late 80’s and very early 90’s that crappy game was able to take her to the very top echelon of the game and stay there for a number of years . She would have been destroyed from 1998 onwards with Hingis Williams and co. But in her era she could have should have won more . It was completely mental with her and she has admitted she didn’t want it enough .

    • @CJJAK37
      @CJJAK37 6 лет назад +3

      So all I’m saying is , she made 18 slam SF and lost 15 of them 😱. Mental nut case. Compare to ASV. 22 slam SF with a 12/10 winning conversion. How does a top player loose 15 of 18 slam SF’s??? Because she didn’t want it . In fact sabatini hated the lime light . She was shy and awkward and hated giving interviews in English . But she was a very gracious person and always congratulated her opponent and was full of class on and off the court . Looking at the rudeness of players today. Gabby was a true lady of the court . Prob too nice at times haha. Lacked the killer instinct of a Graf/Seles/Navratilova/evert /ASV

    • @CJJAK37

      Dustin Gabe yeah quite possibly mate. I can’t really argue with that as Monica killed Arantxa on court . Monica was a tiger . She ate people for breakfast . Haha. No one can deny . she was phenomenal prior to that awful April day. The focus and power and accuracy she had back then was insane. Hit that ball as hard as possible and keep bashing the shit out of it until it does not come back over the net. Haha loved Seles. A true tennis street fighter.

      Agree on the ASV Sabatini comparison also . I still think arantxa was better at the net too though and had a way better drop shot and smash . She just wasn’t graceful when she hit the ball and therefore gets crap for not being talented when in fact she was very very good
