      intheblues hey mate, thanks for the inside look at your tone man. There is a fair amount of yourself in your tone too. I believe you must like your own tone before your playing can go to the next level, and judging by the awesome faces you pull, it's clear you like your tone. Therefore you really dig playing, and that translates into your audience getting the best tone there is. Someone playing with true passion and having a great time doing it will really deliver the best results.... Great job mate.

      Hello InTheBlues
      What about Marshall DSL5c, are you going to do the review? I am thinking between 1 and 5 watt. On Thomann website it seems the 5 outsells all other DSLs.
      Thanks

      Hey there thanks for the Videos. Are you using a noise suppressor in this video in the effects loop or before? My DSL40cr would be making some major noise at that level. :)

      I am actually using the Two-Notes torpedo with the official Celestion V-Type speaker IR so I don't kill myself or the neighbours. 😂 In the live clip these are the exact settings I use in that video.

    I just got my DSL40CR amp a month ago and I completely disagree with you (and several others) on the master volume philosophy. In my experience so far the master volume is a volume boost having little to no effect on your tone. The channel volume OTOH has tremendous effect on your tone. That means I can adjust the master volume without affecting my tone and that's POWERFUL - especially seeing as how I can switch which master volume I'm using (it's more easily done if you get the 6-way foot switch). I can set one master to what I need for regular playing and I can set the other master to what I need for breaking through on a lead or a "rowdy" part of a song. If the sound man tells you your amp is too loud I can adjust the master without affecting my tone. This was a HUGE selling feature for me when getting this amp and the fact you have both masters cranked all the way means you're missing out on some of this amp's best features! Seriously, try dialing back your master volume and cranking up your channel volume and hear what happens. I think you'll like the result.

    • @Proc112
      @Proc112 7 месяцев назад

      I agree. I have a DSL20 head and the channel volume and channel gain work in tandem to give you your tone. The master (in my case an EQ/volume pedal in the effects loop working as an improvised master volume) would then just change overall loudness with minimal change to the gain structure

    • @tomdefazio9954
      @tomdefazio9954 17 дней назад

      This is the perfect answer right here. Using the Master Volume 2 as a solo boost (6 way pedal button number 5) is the best part of the amp.

    I have the new DSL40CR, volume at 1 o'clock on 40 watt mode not even possible in the same room, volume at 9 o'clock max is ear splitting in a 12' x12' room and thats on the 20 watt mode, still sounds great to me at low volume using a Tele or SG. Thanks Shane for the review.

    I am a bit late to the party after playing with the Synergy Syn 2, and 50/50 power amp module rack system. WOW. This Marshall 40 DSL is unbelievably dynamic. I used your settings, and have the amp running through the Marshall 4 x 12 1960 half stack. I bypassed the 12 inch speaker in the combo. I am absolutely stunned with how good this amp set up (with your settings work) for me , Thanks so much Brother

    I have a DSL40C in white tolex (the prior model). I respectfully disagree on running it at full power. Running it 20 watts allows you to turn the amp up more, thus getting a more natural sound. I do the same thing with my DSL100 head (I run it a 50 watts).

    Hi Shane .. I now have the same amp after owning several amps from most well known brands. You’re right the DSL40CR is a great amp for the gigging musician and home use too. I like your settings too although I will keep the V type speaker in place. I run a Boss DD8 and TC Spark mini boost in the fx loop for my solo lead boost ( works great ) which is one stomp on the fx footswitch. I can then keep the channels classic and Ultra as required. Enjoy your channel and admire your playing and passion for music.

      It can do cleans beautifully! Well at least the version before this, the 40c. Check my channel for what I think is a great clean dsl 40 tone. As a matter of fact the clean channel is what I love about it. But everyone's taste differs.

    Most Marshall's benefit from having the masters turned up. I generally set it up to where I like it and control the output volume a bit with the master - but you still need to have it 7 or above to get some of that power tune distortion. Nice video Shane

    OK, I own this amplifier and I cannot envision an inside gig where I would be able to run those channels and master volume settings. I played it out last night on 20W mode with masters at max and channel volumes around 9-10 O'clock and it was insanely loud. I also put it on a Yorkville sound amplifier stand which I think was a mistake. It meant that the highs that this very bright amplifier generates were hitting me right in the back of the head. Love your videos mate, and say "hi" to Landon Bailey for me.

  • @317cmc
    @317cmc 6 лет назад +7

    Thanks for this. I ran these settings on mine last night and it went from sounding good to sounding great. It is super loud, though, particularly with the guitar volume up to make it chunky/distorted. I have a feeling I'll get asked to turn down even jamming with a drummer.
    Does your volume drop a hair when you turn on the FX loop? Mine does and I don't know if it's the pedals in the loop -- Boss GE-7 EQ > Alter Ego Delay > Hall of Fame Reverb.
    My only gripe with this amp is if you set it to these settings, the clean channel is too quiet. I could turn up the classic channel's volume and turn down the master volume, but like you said in the video, it just doesn't sound as good with the master anything less than dimed. Granted, the red crunch mode does clean up pretty well with the guitar volume rolled back. But it's not quite the same pristine clean, and I do need that available for what we play.

My only advice, and it goes for every guitars, take the time to try it to make sure you can feel it.

    Hey man, I have two things I'm trying to figure out on my DSL40CR. There's a bit too much bass (for classic tones) and I'm missing that Vintage low-gain classic rock tone. Like that AC/DC intro tone that is so clear with mid-range growl and vintage tone. How would you personally get that classic rock low-gain tone out of this amp? Or is it too modern of a sound starting point? I LOVE it for heavier stuff and it slays at some classic Metallica stuff. When I A/B tested it against a TSL100 with 4 different guitars...the TSL had a bit of vintage mid-range, low gain swell/grind that you hear when Young hits that TNT Intro. I don't want to give up the versatility of the amps modern and great cleans...but I'd love to find a way to get a little closer to that AC/DC Malcom Young sound.

    for metal put the master about 6 and more gain and volume - this overdrives the pre-amp and not muddy the sound as much. For blues and rock - master 10! Like a Fender or an old Marshall - no master - it was at ten internally.

I’m asking because, because I’ve been burned before by a great sounding amp (it wasn’t a Marshall) that started crapping out on me at a gig and rehearsals, after having it for only 3 years. And I didn’t abuse it at all, quite the contrary. So I’m trying to do a little extra homework on my next amp, and I’m digging the tones I hear you getting out of that dsl 40cr. Just want to get some feedback on build quality.

    My question is I have the previous version of this amp the DSL40C not the CR how do I get the same results your getting from my amp ?

    • @intheblues
      @intheblues  10 месяцев назад

      The older amps sound pretty different from what I remember. You might get closer to the tone by using the same V-Type speaker as found in the current one, or the Texas Heat speaker which I am now using in mine.

      @@intheblues well what I meant is my amp doesn't have 2 master volumes only a volume on each channel so with that I'm wondering if I can achieve the same result with my amp and also the Seventy 80 speaker isn't to bad I do think I will absolutely change it, ps I play mostly southern rock and country stuff so recommendations are appreciated

    All good! Thanks. Shane do you (or any followers) have clean CLEAN settings for this amp you can share? For some of my band's material I need an excellent clean sound for MoTown, ballads, some pop. I have a Les Paul with this amp. I also use a Strat on occasion. Of course the dirtier OD & distortions are exactly what I wanted from this amp. Any and all suggestions are welcomed and appreciated. BTW ... please don't suggest I go buy a Fender, Katana, etc. Been there. They don't sound like Marshall's! Am I expecting too much out of this amp?

    Shane, any vids with a recording of the emulated out? Trying to decide between the origin and DSL. I would like to direct record but i don’t think either gets high marks based on the few videos I have watched. Thanks!

    I’m confused , based on previous post you said to get rid of my Marshall for boss catana

      Not a chance. You must have been watching someone else. I did buy a Katana, but it's not even 1/4 as good as this amp.

    I have the same model but I usually turn the volume all the way up and put the master at halfway, is there any difference or it is the same thing?

      Turn the Masters all the way up and then adjust the channel vol accordingly.... You seem to get a little meatier tones.

    Hi Shaun i've got a fender blues deluxe was thinking of buying a attenuator so i can crank the amp but use it in the house what do you think of them take care mate

    • @tdunster2011
      @tdunster2011 6 лет назад

      A good attenuator will cost you more than the Fender Blues Deluxe did. Probably better off keeping the Blues Deluxe for gigs and getting a Fender Champ 5f1 or Fender Princeton 5e3 for home use.

    Sounds great, but I thought the point of the 2 master volumes was that you could set one slightly higher for a solo volume boost, so why set both maxed out?

    • @intheblues
      @intheblues  5 лет назад

      Because it has channel volumes. The amp sounds best with the masters cranked. Give it a shot you'll see what I mean. Run the tubes hot = better tone.

    Good work Shane. I bought one of these amps recently and done a couple of gigs- great bang for buck. I put a Celestion Creamback Neo speaker in there and was an instant tone improvement, also do the C19 mod- snip the cap in the pcb, and it gets rid of the fizzy tone on the OD channels sound great.

    The setting g you talk about are way to loud for my apt. 40 is super loud.

    • @jrny2ixtlan
      @jrny2ixtlan 6 лет назад

      I use mine in low power mode and it is still super loud. Cool thing about this amp is the emulated out still runs in stand by mode. When I play smaller room gigs, I leave it in standby and adjust the house settings. Sounds great that way
