Can you explain exactly what a “patterned tree” is? I have heard this mentioned on bonsai Q but have not seen it enough to translate what it means.

A type of tree whose trunk curves in a pattern. The stem pattern flows to the left, or the right, in this case she was talking about Moyogi style 模様木.
Ah, I can't seem to convey it well with a literal translation. sorry. It is the most typical bonsai shape...it has a basic tree shape with a moderately curved trunk and well-balanced branches extending from side to side. I'm sure you're doing it too.
In Japanese, it is called by a word that means "patterned tree."

Idea. Instead of using the note sheets, you can use a blackboard out of camera range so only you can see it. That way you will not forget. You can use a bigger blackboard or dry erase board in the background with your tree shape idea. Then with the blackboard as the background with your idea, start shaping the tree to conform to the drawing on the blackboard. Tree in front of the board. Might help everyone to see as you shape the tree. Just a thought.
Somehow, personally I'm not quite shure about this. Why not look at - possible - natural appearances of these pines, in (wild) nature? For me, bonsaï is about trying to create a natural image or impression (or possible natural image/impression) of trees or bushes or otherwise pieces of nature. Isn't that what bonsaï is all about? But of course, it's also about imagination (as mr. Kanta once pointed out). So, I'm in doubt about taking this "hiragana" shape as an inspiration for shaping bonsaï trees and I don't think it would be my choice, simply because it doesn't seem natural. Anyway, good luck Kimi, let's go for 14 K...
