About Crazy Rich Asians:
"Crazy Rich Asians” follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding), to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick’s family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life. It turns out that he is not only the scion of one of the country’s wealthiest families but also one of its most sought-after bachelors. Being on Nick’s arm puts a target on Rachel’s back, with jealous socialites and, worse, Nick’s own disapproving mother (Michelle Yeoh) taking aim. This song being used in the film really has a double meaning. The Chinese version talks about making a lover get very hot even with a hug. This is symbolic of the fact that Nick & Rachel are madly in love. On the flipside, the English lyrics associated with the music are Material Girl - representing the lavish material world that Rachel has suddenly found herself in.

I encountered this version before Madonna's Material Girl. My Mum brought along her old school cassettes with her to the UK after she married my Dad, so my sister and I had a healthy dosage of cantopop when we grew up. It was wonderful hearing it in the film!

The song was released in 1985 in the second album of Sally Yeh, covering the song Material Girl which was sung by Cyndi Lauper
I felt like this was SO appropriate for the film, and even more so now that I've looked up a rough translation.
The fact that it uses the same melody as "material girl" fits right in with the plotline about the dynamics of an absurdly wealthy family, but the actual lyrics of this version of the song seem to be more about two people completely sidestepping the environment they are both in by cutting the BS, holding each other tight, and just *feeling* one another.
TBH I was expecting a cute but forgettable rom com when I sat down for this, and the sheer quality and talent in the film blew me away. This was a GREAT film.
It really was. Instant classic.

Oh wow. I can't believe they used Sally Yeh's Cantonese 1980s song for this movie. The song is literally named 200 degrees. Basically it is about being with a lover that makes the other person feel so hot and warm that it is like 200 degrees including when being hugged.

I will admit this is better than the original as much as I love Material girl this for some reason sounds so much more realistic, and more modern!
To be quite honest, the 1985 Cantopop cover of Madonna's "Material Girl" is IMHO better than the original. Sally Yeh's version sounds so fresh and contemporary that I thought it was created for the film. I had no idea it came out just after the original did decades ago. Wow, you learn something new all the time! I'd also like to ditto other people's opinion that the entire soundtrack is top quality.
Now we all have to imagine...
How did Sally Yeh herself feel when she found out her song was going to be used in an American movie and started getting those sweet royalty checks from her record label?!
