I can recall that the wrestling promotion WCW would do that during their last days before they went under. The UFC did this trick to gain more of an audience while using a ramp through the seating for the fighters entrance to take up more space and close off the upper seating to make it look like they were sold out on television. Of course it worked for the UFC.
