The Secret of a good retirement is getting a puppy. You won't feel the need to spend a lot of money traveling and if your kids don't visit often you always have a dog to love you

The only mistake I made when I was retiring was not having enough cash on hand to bridge the gap to start collecting SS.

Most gaps people talk about in early retirement is to age 59.5, but true the gap to 62-67 is real too.

Having more money in retirement is always better than having less money in retirement. An inconvenient truth might be to work an extra year or two…..

Loved your comments about the current rebalancing opportunity towards the end of your message today. I'm getting that good old barbell going....I am 5 months from retirement...and am rebalancing to reflect a)1 year of "cash needs" in a checking account b)9 years of "cash needs" (including inflation adjuster) set aside in money market and/or Govt. bonds and the balance of retirement resources in Vanguard stock Index funds. The next ten years of "cash needs" are solid and secure...I sleep well at night. If the stock market side of the barbell can give me the yearly "cash needs", then great, I'll take it from the stock side of the barbell. If not, I have 10 years of cushion on the cash/bonds side of the barbell if the stock market does a decade-long nose dive. Not much chance of a decade-long US stock market deep dive.
