Memories!!!! growing up in SE Nebraska, Kings on "O" street was a must stop any time I went to Lincoln. I've tried them at home, but yours came out much better than mine.

There is a restaurant in Lincoln Nebraska called Don and Millie's. It's my understanding they both used to work for King's Food Host and have the original recipe for Cheese Frenchees (I have craved them for decades). I drive right by it on my way home to see my parents and will stop to relive the nostalgia. Nothing better than a cheese frenchee and an order of onion rings!

couple of things king's never use flour all though that may work also they used back then #5 Sunshine cracker meal. They also cut corner to corner making 4 Frenchee's per plate. Food for thought. Brings back memories.

We had a King’s Food Host in my hometown of Waterloo,IA in the late 60’s….I remember the novelty of the restaurant was there was a phone in the booth and you called in your order….also odd was they had a note at the booth saying no tipping.

Had Tuna Frenchees and Cheese Frenchees at the King’s Food Host in Longmont, Colorado in the 60’s & 70’s. Was so sad when they closed. I appreciate W Zune’s info from their job at a King’s! Have been wanting this recipe for a long time!

My mother made Frenchees for Kings in Des Moines. The Frenchees were made at a central location, and allowed to temper in the coolers, then would be shipped out to the area restaurants the next day where they would be cooked.

The people making them sure earned their money!

More years ago than I care to remember, I worked for King's Food Host in ND, and later managed several of their locations in greater KC.
Cheese and Tuna Frenchees, along with King's onion rings, were breaded in cracker meal (not unlike crushed saltine crackers). NOT corn flakes.
The Tuna Frenchee and onion rings were dipped in the same dipping batter, prior to being breaded. The batter for the Cheese Frenchee, however, included powdered cheese. Not unlike the orange stuff left on your fingers after handling Cheetos.

@@JohnEatsCheap YW. After posting my comment, I was looking at products that are for sale to the general public. Looks like Kraft is selling the powder separately, that is in their Mac and Cheese. I am fairly certain King's used a Kraft product. I noticed there are also several other retail brands of powdered cheddar cheese.
As for the cracker meal, I'd buy some low sodium saltine crackers and crush them to a medium course consistency. I think the product King's used came from Nabisco. It was not of uniform consistency. It was always a mix, and most of it was not fine.

OK John, I had to try them again. They came out a lot better than the last time I made them. BUT oh what a mess to clean up. I took the cut offs and rolled them in batter and coated them in crumbs and fried them as one glob. They were good also. Thanks for giving me a boost.
