Here's a more complete method of how I cleaned out the cooling system AND the purge line. This lady is correct that this thing is a small line and it can get easily clogged and it will single handedly overheat the engine. Now my car runs the perfect temps. On my 98 DeVille I just pulled out the upper and lower radiator hoses and let it drain that way. I took a garden hose, stuck it in my upper radiator hose and flushed water from the top of the radiator to the bottom and waited for the water to run clear. Then I put the garden hose in the lower radiator hose and reverse flushed it so it went from the bottom of the radiator out the upper radiator hose and I let that run clear. Then I removed the reservoir cap, stuck the garden hose down into it and flushed all of the coolant out of the engine and it ejects out of the port that the upper radiator hose connects to. I let that run clear. Then I put the garden hose right up to the port that the upper radiator hose connects to and blasted water in reverse through the engine until it overflowed the reservoir and I let that run clear. Then I took out the thermostat, put the reservoir cap back on and off the garden hose into the upper port and flushed it out of the lower port. Then (THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT) I put the upper and lower radiator hoses back on but I didn't clamp them down. I took off the purge line which is directly above the upper radiator hose. It's a narrow and small little hose with small clamps. Clean out that hose and make sure the small outputs on both ends of the port are clear of debris. There Purge line is very easy to get clogged up and when it does it'll overheat your car every time. Stick the garden hose down into the reservoir and blast water through until it sprays out of the front and back of the purge line with full force. Put them Purge line hose back on and clamp it down. Drain all of the water out of the radiator and the engine. I just blow through the upper radiator hose until it's clear. And then I put a disconnected small tube or hose on to the reservoir opening and blow air into it until all the water is out of it. Take a jug of coolant and pour it down into the upper radiator hose until it's coming out of the lower hose until it's flowing free with no bubbles and quickly jam the lower radiator hose into the lower port. Now the radiator is full. Keep the upper radiator hose filled to the brim and keep it held up so it doesn't overflow. Then start filling the reservoir up with coolant until it's flowing freely through the upper radiator port and there are no bubbles coming out. Then jam the upper radiator hose into that port. Clamp the hoses down, fill the reservoir up half way and you're good to go. Start the car up, let it run with the reservoir cap off, squeeze the upper radiator hose continually to burp the air out. After about 20 minutes of this, put more coolant if it's lowered down some and keep it filled too the hallway point. Put the cap back on and let it keep running while revving it up to 3000 RPM. This helps Purge the air out some more. Monitor the temps and make sure the fan turns on and off at 222 and 213 degrees. It should bounce back and forth between these 2 temps while idling if everything is down correctly. Doing it this way will make sure that everything is cleaned out and not clogging anything up. The Purge line is very important to keep cleared and it's very easy to do. This one small like will overheat your car in a heartbeat if it's plugged up.
I was having heating problems with my 2000 seville sts. This video is a God sent. After replacing the bigger things, i couldn't understand why the resvoir hose was still cool, and i was still overheating. Took this gem of a video for advice. It took brute force to clear the hollow bolt! Cleared it completely out 100 percent no heating issues! Thank you, i thought i researched it all, but in the end, this video saved my Sally Saville. ☺
There was no flow through my 01 Deville hose either. I just did what u said and there is flow now. No more over heating. Thank you very much. I will be uploading a video soon.
This video freaking made my year I bought a 2006 dts this thrusday with 120k owner said it had bad headgaskets so I got a good deal on a engine but I didn't think it was the heads cause I had no smoke no check engine light and the radiator was cold when the car was running hot so I ran across your video and did this it solved my problem I'm a mechanic and I never ever thought about this little hose being the problem just want to thank you it helped me as a mechanic now I know for next time
Thanks for the video!!! Fixed the problem I was having without spending a bunch of money at a shop. I even reamed out the hole with a 9/64 drill bit to make it a bit larger to help prevent future issues. THANKS AGAIN!!
I have to echo the exact same words how grateful I am about clearing out that little "purge" line on this 2000 Eldorado project I'm working on! Previoisly, it would overheat easily after 5 minutes, whether idling or driving; The previous owner told me it needed a new water pump; I didn't see anything dripping from underneath, but after I watched this video? I didn't even take a 9/32 drill, I just used a metal sharp pick and it was clogged SOLID! After I finally punctured through the solid clog in the purge line, so far it hasn't overheated SINCE! I still have to take it on a road trip to be sure, but previously it would overheat after only 5 minutes! Now, it's been 25, 30 minutes, and the needle on the temp gauge stays dead center or slightly LOWER! WOW! I am SO grateful for this video!🙏 Thank you!👍
I really appreciate that info because seriously I am having the over heating problem on my 2001 Cadillac DeVille just replaced the thermostat new radiator and it still ran hot, Thank you for the video so much 👍👍👍👍
You rock, we changed the thermostat and was about to go buy a new waterpump and thankfully we saw this video first!! It worked perfectly, thank you so much for making this video, you saved us so much money.
Big Thank you! Was chasing my tail trying to figure out why my wife's 02 Caddy was overheating. Checked the port and it was plugged solid. Cleaned out and she's running good now. Was about to send it to the scrap yard thinking it popped a head gasket.. So glad I found this vid. THANK YOU for sharing!
I can not thank you enough for making this video! This is exactly what was wrong with my Deville. I wouldn't have known to even check this if it wasn't for your video... so so grateful!
You are my new best friend . I pulled the bolt and it was clear but when i went to blow air through the line nothing and then a "POP" so now its back to normal. AWESOME . Thanks you
STAR STAR STAR I LOVE YOU TOO DEATH YOUNG LADY !!!!! I HAVE BEEN HAVING HEADACHES OVER MY CADI DEVIL FOR OVER A YEAR WITH HER OVER HEATING! TOOK HER TO SHOPS TO POWER FLUSH THE RADIATOR TWICE CHANGED THE THERMOSTAT-AND WATER PUMP AND CENSER.. BUT LOOKING AT YOUR (YOU TUBE VIDEO ) MADE SO MUCH SINCE AND IT WAS SO EASY TODO .. AND NOW MY BABY IS GOOD AGAIN !! THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!!
@Dianne check the purge line, check the hollow bolt, make sure your full on coolant. With the purge line disconnect it on both ends and put some pressured air through it. same with the hollow bolt...the hollow bolt is at the end of the purge line close to engine... very easy access. do it your self... If engine still runs hot check thermostat. which is also easy access and easy to check
Thank u...just fixed my 06 dts 😁😁 after putting a waterpump and new thermostat and it was still overheating...this really did the trick...thanks again for the video
Damn you got to love a women that knows her way around under the hood. My late wife was the same, thanks for this tip been changing out parts same problem. Will check out God bless
Thank You, I Knew Northstar Engines Weren't As Bad As People Make It Seem, I Realized This Too When My Car Would Overheat, All It Needed Was A New Water Pump.. As Long As We Give It It's Maintenance It's All Good,.. And Btw Ur Pretty (:
Good video girl. One other thing that may be of concern is the AC condenser that blocks air flow to the radiator. I moved the condenser forward around an inch or two and now the Cadillac actually cools while stopped and in traffic With a temp of 170 tops. . Like I said though good video.
I figured id post a video to let the caddy owners know because I know so many people love Cadillacs. I've had 5 or so before I figured out that this is a small problem that most north stars have and many owners don't no about. they go to fix all the other things not even knowing that the issue is super simple
Thaks a lot for the tip I'll check it tomorrow ' cause my Cady overheats I changed the thermostat and flushed the coolant several times too and it and it still overheats I'm fed up but I hope it works. Thaks again lady ' cause I love my baby Seville 2001
Thank you I've just got a 99 DeVille Cadillac Loving it my fourth one well my North star is kinda doing that but the fans was bad the the side wall of the raidator leaking bad lol well it's what it is a cold Ridding Lack
My caddy DeVille is doing something similar, but it had run out of coolant as well. Is that a possibility? Will the heating cause it to use up more coolant?
I fixed my overheating problem on my 98 DeVille. I had a bad coolant cap and the system was totally clogged up. So I drained the system by taking off the upper and lower radiator hoses, then I flushed water through the upper hose, into the top of the radiator and out through the lower hose. then I back flushed the radiator by running the garden hose through the bottom radiator hose and waited for it to start pouring out the upper radiator hose. I waited for all of the coolant to wash out. then I put the garden hose up against the port where the upper radiator hose connects to and blasted the garden hose through that. it pushed out all of the coolant through the entire engine and out the reservoir tank. I let that run clear and then put the garden hose down the reservoir tank and let it flow out the upper radiator hose port. do this and let everything flow out until it's clear. then reconnect the bottom hose. then take a jug of radiator cleaning fluid and pour it down into the upper radiator hose so that it goes straight in to the radiator and fill the rest of it up with water and reattach the upper radiator hose. then fill the reservoir up with water and start the engine with the cap off. squeeze the upper radiator hose to burp the air out of the system and fill it up with water and put the cap on and let it get up to operating temp. then let it sit for a couple of hours. drain the system by removing the upper and lower radiator hoses and flush and back flushed with water again. do this several times until you see nothing but clear liquid coming out. then fill it with coolant and you're done. I fill the radiator directly through the upper hose first. then replace that hose and then fill the reservoir. doing this lowered my operating temperature by 25 degrees and now it doesn't overheating.
wesley maynard I think I need to do exactly this. Mine isn't over heating too much, it usually stays between 190 and 220. I was going to flush out the coolant and clean out the hoses before it gets any hotter.
I started with the thermostat first. Less than a week later, water pump started leaking so I felt safe to assume that I was about to catch unavoidable hell. If it gets hot again, I'll start here.
I am going to check mines on my 97 aurora. We must remember these motors gm makes are made to blow up. So you 'll buy another. These motors could have been super and last 400k. But shotty sensors. Small purge lines. Leaking gaskets will ensure your North star blows up due to lack of attention. Motor runs smooth. Good power. Great bodys. = customer is out of car buying business for 10 years easy. Ford gm Chrysler. They need repeat business.
Hey Star...I'm back...just bought a 99 El Dorado...Super clean. Guy said it overheats intermittently but I bought it anyway...Looses a small amount of coolant after driving but not overheating. Hate pump and thermostat has been changed out..Car even has vogues on it with 117,000 miles...Any suggestions...or desired prices?
If you were driving the Northstar while its was running hot then that definitely did it. Northstars are sensitive, you cannot let them overheat too many times. But I'm pretty sure it was something simple before your engine blew. And one more thing people dont check is the cadillitic converters. If its clogged it can also make a car run hot
Hi . I cleaned the coolant resevour to fix the sensor but after that my Cady overheated actually the coolant boils , I did this something I do appreciate and it doesn't overheat but the boiling continues . It doesn't have milky oil or white smog or something like that . Any idea please ?
I'm having the same problem! I was able to move the clamp out of the way, but the hose doesn't seem to to want to pull off. Did you end up resolving this problem?
My 2005 jus started overheating last night out the blue when I turn it off fans still blow for a good minute the all the coolant or most of it comes out after car turned off is this my thermostat or my water pump
My 2004 deville randomly started overheating yesterday going to work .. had to tow car back home.. next day i got a oil change and fresh coolant.. still overheating 30 seconds after turn on car.. Found this video figure i give it a try.. i open my hood to find the hollow bolt.. smh and saw my dam belt hanging off the pulley 😂 my belt snapped and got chewed up.. Not sure if thats the reason why it's running hot instantly.. but im 100% sure it is...
There are two belts the accy belt on passenger side of engine and the small one on the drivers side of car near valve cover, this drives water pump. Without the pump circulating coolant you will destroy engine.
My 2004 deville i have to keep changing the coolant every morning and afternoon when i get off of work approx 10 hours after i refilled in the morning i havent notice any coolant leaks. Also the two radiator fans dont come on when i have a/c at full blast. The top hose to the radiator i am also able to squeeze it together while car is running. Any ideas???? Plz help 😆
Lol my pleasure!!! I love Northstars I think people give them a bad rep. I refused to let people tell me my heads were cracked or engine blown. I wasn't going for that. I've have a few Northstars and never had a engine problem. They've overheated but it would be a hose or thermostat simple stuff. But if you continue to drive the Northstar while it's hot then yes you can blow your engine and that's any car really. Northstars are just a little more sensitive and cant take too much overheating. So if it does run hot dont drive it till you can fix the issue but I can guarantee you the engine will not blow if you dont drive it hot.
I have the same problem just started Monday. The thing is it takes it a while before it starts to overheat (45 min or so), how quick was yours running b4 it started overheating?
My 2000 Cadillac Deville DHS Northstar V8 is currently overheating and it just started out of nowhere. The car starts right up, it overheats and it says I need an oil change after it heats up but it just got an oil change, it also says check coolant and it has coolant in it because I added some when it first started overheating, it just runs hot, do not think it’s blown head gasket because my car doesn’t smoke or anything when it does get hot. I’m not sure if any of you alls Lac is similar to what mine is doing?? Maybe this video will help not sure just kind of need advice here please.
I've got a 98 eldo ive went trew everthing on rhe coolent sys water pump thermostat overflow tank thermostat houseing the only thing thats not new RAD. And i was still leaking coolint it looked like it was coming out around the waterpump houseing i was going to give up on it and i tryed one last thing that nanotec headgasket in a can stuff it seems to have worked she's running like a top and not getting hot anymore id recommend it before any of you other northstar floks decide to do the 3,000 doller head gasket job or just junk your caddys you've got noting to loose at that point anyway . I must have got a good one because i got ot with 145,000 on it and im up to 248,000 mi now there good cars but you have to keep an eye out for sentient things and your good
Did your Cadillac ever died , and replaced the battery and still won't start ? Everything turns on but it won't start? I hear the clicking noise under the hood ..but idk anyone help?
denttimothyr44 It's right above the upper radiator hose. Read my full comment at the top for my full process to clean out the entire system. This little line will single handedly overheat the engine. And it's so small that it's easy to get clogged.

Probably a dumb question, but how do you get that hose detatched? Gotta pair of pliers for the little clamp, but the hose still doesnt want to budge
Put a little WD40 to loosen the clamp
I'm having the same problem! I was able to move the clamp out of the way, but the hose doesn't seem to to want to pull off. Did you end up resolving this problem?
What year Cadi
Yeah,80% of the time dishonest mechanics say it is the head gaskets and you need to spend 4K+ to fix.
Be aware.
It is NOT.
So that's going to be my problem I'll check that asap thanks for ur vid helps :)
you're welcome
What was the name of the part that you cleaned and what is the name of the part that it screwed into?
Thanks for sharing.
Maybe, but check the hollow bolt and the purge line as well, any given time there can be multiple things not working properly.
There are two belts the accy belt on passenger side of engine and the small one on the drivers side of car near valve cover, this drives water pump. Without the pump circulating coolant you will destroy engine.
Yo this helped me dang thank you
Robert Cypress lol dang your welcome😂🤩😂
My 2004 deville i have to keep changing the coolant every morning and afternoon when i get off of work approx 10 hours after i refilled in the morning i havent notice any coolant leaks. Also the two radiator fans dont come on when i have a/c at full blast. The top hose to the radiator i am also able to squeeze it together while car is running. Any ideas???? Plz help 😆
2003 im sorry
Yo I Love you ❤️ lol a lady that helped me tame the beast called Northstar
@@stargaimazz8154 could you do a video on flushing the radiator?
what's the name of the hose what part of the engine is it located ??
Thank you problem solved
Johnny Clark Sr. Your very welcome!
How did you clean it out ...I'm having the same problem....changed thermostat still runs warm....it doesn't red line over heat but runs warm

Have 2003 deville was not started for 3 wks, list all power had battery recharged how i hear battery clicking but still no power?
I have the same problem just started Monday. The thing is it takes it a while before it starts to overheat (45 min or so), how quick was yours running b4 it started overheating?
JJ Madison check the hollow bolt and the thermostat, and blow pressured air through the purge line
Yes check the hollow bolt, it can be clogged.
Also thanks for the video!
So what is that part called?
hollow bolt
What type of Cadillac??
Did it leak ?
What line was clogged or had debris !?
B Charles it’s called a hollow bolt it’s connected to the purge line
hollow bolt / purge line
Where exactly is this hose?
Is 190 to 222 normal for coolant temperature?
How u get the hoses off
Why am I not getting coolant in my upper radiator hose?
MrShankfu check the water pump or the thermostat check thermostat first
@@theproperway1243 you all late lol. I solved the problem already. It was neither of those!
I must have got a good one because i got ot with 145,000 on it and im up to 248,000 mi now there good cars but you have to keep an eye out for sentient things and your good
Do you still have this car?
Yes I do
What did you use to unclog it ?
You can use a bobby pin
Does this work on the Northstar Motors as well
This is a Northstar
Is these the same on an 03 deville
Did your Cadillac ever died , and replaced the battery and still won't start ? Everything turns on but it won't start? I hear the clicking noise under the hood ..but idk anyone help?
How did you get the bold loose. Mine seems really stuck. Cannot turn the bolt? Linda.
my 2002 Cadillac northstar just start running hot so I need to no what to do. It has never done this before.
What is that called
Didn’t work. I cleaned it out which it was dirty and clogged. But it’s still over heating. I also already have a new thermostat on it
Hollow what?
Hollow bolt, it’s an actual bolt that’s hollow connected to the side of the engine which is the purge line
I can't find it
does this work 97-99 devilles??
Where is that located. My 97 is overheating.
denttimothyr44
It's right above the upper radiator hose. Read my full comment at the top for my full process to clean out the entire system. This little line will single handedly overheat the engine. And it's so small that it's easy to get clogged.
