@@NoahKellman sure. You know I have long fingers. And I'm thinking to myself, what's my excuse? But then it also occurs to me that that 10th interval is indeed very difficult cover - particularly as you mentioned, the black notes. The muscle memory is difficult to master. I have the additional challenge of being a middle-aged amateur. But I think that given time I can still get this. Thank you for the technical insights that you've given. Will in Hampton
Hey mate, I've recently stumbled upon your channel and have to say I love the layout. It's always straight to the point and I really like how you give a bit of a demo before diving in. So many channels fail to do this and it really saves a lot of time in knowing whether a video is relevant. On top of that, the material is super solid and seems helpful for any level. Look forward to seeing more. Sincerely, A jazz uni student from Melbourne, Australia.
Hey Sean, thanks for the comment man. Really good to hear the format makes sense and is helpful. Hope all is well in Australia! Feel free to comment anytime you questions.
I'm the same as you, Noah -- I can reach 10ths only on the white keys. I'm heartened by the fact that even a stride monster like James P. Johnson rarely used tenths, and when he did, he rolled them. I think he did OK. : ) Good video, man.
You are an exceptionally gifted person. You taught me something important. Taking a simple concept or rift and practicing it until it becomes pro is something every musician on any instrument should be doing. Thank you. (I am John, not Onuma). Also, I lived in the Mt. Helix area of La Mesa California for 20 years. The trees visible outside your home looked quite similar. I wouldn't ask a question that would invade your privacy, but if you would care to comment whether I was "hot" or "cold" with my analysis that would be cool. Good luck with your music. The sky is not the limit.
Thanks, Adam- yeah, I think the pedal needs to be used carefully if you're going to use it! I did tapping my foot on it to add a little sustain to the bass notes.
Noah, how do you know which chord inversion to play with the 10ths on beats 2 and 4?? I listen to the old stride cats like Fats Waller, Art Tatum, and Oscar Peterson but I can't figure out the formula or what governs which chord inversion to play on those beats? Thanks in advance.
Great question- I like to think of it like this: even though you are playing a bass note in between chords, you still want to use good voice leading. So if you use an inversion of a chord, the next chord you play after that should be close to the last one. Does that make sense?
Very fine lesson, my man! I find stride hard to resist! If you don’t mind a slight critique: leave a bit of space where the edge of the the keys are-near where the wrists would be-so that we could see the whole hand moving, and not just the fingers ( it’s just too crowded and a bit uncomfortable to look at). No offense l really liked the lesson!
Noah ... I have been following your channel for a long time , can I get you to help me improve more in my playing personally... Maybe thru mails or so..thank you
Hey Noah! I gotta say Art Tatum brought me here and man! Your instruction just blows me away. You dissect the technique succinctly. Thanks Will
Hey just saw your comment here thanks really appreciate it!

Wow. Fantastic. I'm a long way from being able to play this, but it sounds so great and so inspiring I'll just have to keep on trying.

Man Noah ! Your way of dissecting concepts is just too good! Lots of Love from India < 3
for whatever reason, i’ve always preferred stride without the pedal. just makes it more stanky imo. awesome playing mr. kellman

Bendiciones, me encato este tutorial
Gracias, Samuel!
🇧🇷 Thank you for share us this poust! Good examples.
How do you roll/shake those octave chords like Erroll Garner and Art Tatum? Any pianists have an answer?
I'm not a professional, but pivoting off of the middle finger helps
Thank you Sir.
You're welcome!

@@NoahKellman Yes, thanks!
What's the song at the beginning?
Great!
I love the casual 'hey, what's up guys' while he's crushing it on the piano😂
Hahah!
you are the best
hi noah
canyou show a page or 2 from the stride book
also is it a down load that i can print?
Hey Jane, you can check them out at jazzpianoconcepts.com/store ! Also, yes it is a download that you can print. It comes in PDF form.
Thank You Noah !!!!! 😃
You're welcome!
Amazing! Thank you so much 😊
You're welcome, Bhavesh!
How important is it to be able to do LH leaps without looking?
I would say as a stride/ragtime pianist, that it is fairly important! Especially for sight reading music!
Noah: _"We can take a _*_really_*_ simple chord for example"_
Also Noah: _"Let's take a BbMaj7"_
Bbmaj7 is a really simple chord when it comes to jazz music, it's like the open G chord on guitar for cowboy music
I tried these & they’re definitely killer - Should’ve heard my neighbours screams 😂

Hey Michael, thanks for the follow! Feel free to shoot me an email with your questions: JazzPianoConcepts@gmail.com.
What if I can't reach an octave?
You can either play fifths instead, or you can hop/skip the octave or tenth but jumping your pinky to your thumb. Does that make sense?
In the fourth and fifth measure of the second exercise your are playing an extra note in the and of the third time that's not written
Stride's Not Died!
Wish my hands weren't so damn tiny 🤣
am i the only one who doesn't think the sheet music for exercise 1 matches what he's playing?
🎹🎶
👍🏻👊🏻👌🏼
i cant reach tenths at all what the hell
YOU LIKE JAZZ?
hahah is it not obvious?
@@NoahKellman yep
roll the tenths, why not? Cuz it felt like cheeting lol.
Fain.
too hard
It's best if you show the score, and less your face.
A lot of Czerny in this video.
