A symphony by someone who was to become a 'grand old man' of British music. Such a change from the two Elgar symphonies. A very good and well written piece and very much the equal of others written at the time.

Thanks anyhow. I am new to youtube & enjoying finding new classics - composers & symphonies that I had never heard before.

To anyone who enjoys this and other neglected British symphonies I would recommend Stanley Bate's 4th symphony (available on Y.T.) If ever there was an unjustly neglected composer it is Bate, the 3rd and 4th symphonies are seriously good works.

Mato Jelic's and yours are the only videos I 'like' before I hear them. You're both consistently superb.

You are heartily welcome! When I started to write programme notes for the Delaware Symphony Orchestra in 1976 my resources were dismal by comparison with today. I had to drive 16km. to the University library and hunt through what few books they had. Grove Music (1954 edition!) in paperback was my main resource for biographical material; the Internet (1990s) was surely the beginning of the world's exponential explosion of knowledge widely available to all.

Ottima composzione di un musicista praticamente musicalmente sconosciuto!
    Grazie Dilfeng.

I agree about the influence of Richard Strauss, who was arguably the most famous living composer when Davies wrote this symphony.

This is an unexpected rarity - so very many thanks! The Wikipedia article on Davies is most useful w.r.t. his life and works because Grove Music online unfortunately has only a short bio of him and no listing of his music.
I also applaud your change of heart about the addition of items to your database; without pioneers like you and other RUclipsrs who extend daily the wealth of rare music now available online, how can music-lovers learn and probably enjoy 'lost' works?

Wonderful British symphony. Is there a 1st symphony ?

He wrote one in 1894 but there is no recording of that one, at least to my knowledge.

He was Master of the King's Musick between Elgar and Bax?
