Some advice from a leather crafter (and a Tandy employee, love all the shoutouts you give us) Add a welt to your bottles, like you would along the edge of a knife sheath. it creates a barrier for the wax to soak into that keeps the water from ever reaching the stitches.

@@SkillTree using a round awl will spread the leather open for stitching, instead of cutting it like the prong punch. That should help the leather "heal" around the holes better when you seal it.

I use food save Silicone to make it water tight. The advantage is that it doesn't get soft from heat again so that even on Super hot days it's not gonna suddenly leak. Also than you can clean the inside with dishsoap so I can fill orange juice in it (I freakin love orange juice) and get it clean afterwards so it doesn't get moldy.

Did you use the same process as the beeswax or did you have to keep turning it as the silicone cured?
@@jeremyrodriguez8109 i madeca fiel that is more bittle shaped that is mor bottel shaped the way ist sagen together. So I treated the inside before sewing it together. After sawing fill in some of the silicone and let it flow over the seams. But ot works also the way clever guy did it, than just mix a small amount of the Silicone, put it in, make shure it gets everywhere, put it out. Repeat that a few times staring when the last layer not fully cured jet but stopped flowing, that way thay bond probably. It works but is a little wistful.
does not matter what you use in time like every thing elis they government will say it not good for you and tax the crap out of it like the gas prices here but our loster does see it as a problem he has been busy flying around the world on tax pays money too
Well if you're afraid to use Contact Cement you can always make hide glue and level up that skill.
It's really easy to make. You just need rawhide, dog chews work, water, a pot, and a heat source. You will want to pre soak the rawhide till it becomes soft and pliable, next cut it into small pieces. The smaller the better but half an inch by half an inch or 2 cm by 2 cm works great. Not add them back into the water. Make sure the water covers the hide. Place the pot over the heat source and allow to boil. Stir it every few minutes to keep the hide from sticking to the bottom of the pot and burning. Keep it boiling and soon the water will start to thicken. Once it is about as thick as honey take out the remaining pieces of hide. Take it off the heat and allow to cool. Once it has cooled you will be able to use it. Poor the excess into a jar with a water tight lid. And store in a cool dry location for later use.
There's nothing quite like a project that melds form and function. Maddie's design really made this pop. I'd love to just carry this around with me instead of the normal plastic one I have.

You could use pine pitch glue (pine sap mixed with ground charcoal) as a safer alternative to contact cement.

Nice! I just got some beeswax from my friend who runs a Mazery. No charge so my plan is to craft things as thanks and this will be perfect! I can make a bottle with their logo on it so he can enjoy the mead he makes from it!

I found this channel a few days go and just haven't been able to stop watching. Watching you make all these projects inspired by medieval fantasy reminds me of what I wanted to make as a child. Hopefully I'll someday have the means to take on a similar project myself in the future. I specifically feel inspired by the assassin cloak and the war mage hood. For what it's worth. If you have time to kill while you wait for glue to dry (I do), Titebond makes a food safe glue. It's used by wood workers for gluing up cutting boards.

This was an excellent build. If I may give a suggestion, should you choose to build this again. Add a "gusset" to the bottom of the bottle. An ovoid piece of leather used as the bottom of the water bottle will help you add space to your water supply (area of retention), add the ability to expand the sides of your bottle more AAAAAAND it will give you the ability to actually stand your bottle on a table. Not a big help, since it's carried, but it sucks if you forget to put the stopper in all the way and the bottle falls over. Your liquid is poofy go bye-bye. Have fun!
I'd think a gusset might make it feel a little less comfortable when carried though, having those bottom edges naturally pull away from you seems like it'd make for pleasant carry

Your an epic story teller.. Personally i would of probably molded the leather first before stiching it... however i like how you used popcorn kernels to create it.. thats actually pretty snazzy . everyone has their own way of doing things... you just showed me another way to accomplish wet molding.

I might have to make 10 of these all because my larp buddies are bad at getting enough water when we leave town. This has resulted in the amazing line "you see a unicorn climb down the tree and run into the forest... wait did I say unicorn? I meant squirrel" (unicorn and squirrel sound similar in my native language)

Alternatives to popcorn are rice or sand. They will pack in tighter and make a smoother finish. Popcorn can leave a lumpy finish, especially with thinner leathers. Sand can pack the tightest, creating the greatest volume, however it can leave granules within, unless you clean it with a long handles toothbrush.
Good call! I am sure, even if there is a bit of sand left, it will just get sealed in place with the wax too.
I usually do popcorn, but yeah, it can get pebbled. I also make sure to drop on a couple marbles and shake the crap out of it after dumping the kernels to knock out any that stuck. I wonder if that would work for sand too.

@@jakubrogacz6829 I don't know. A balloon might work, but it would have to be more substantial than just a regular balloon, and you'd need a compressor. I tried once, just out of curiosity to inflate one, unlined, my lung power, and no chance... just not enough power.

I made my costrel by creating a wooden form and wet-molding it by pressing the leather between the center (bottle) and frame (the "press"). I used melted pine rosin as my glue and then Sewed the halves together. I sealed it with the ratio 1 pound beeswax to a quarter pound pine rosin. That makes the Brewer's Pitch.
Mine big though, it holds almost 3 liters.

When I made one of these years ago, I used sand to shape the cavity. Wet leather, pack sand into it, let it dry, then dump the sand out. Spent a few extra minutes knocking any remaining sand out of it, but had a perfectly smooth, symmetrical shape without wasting food to do it. Sealed it with beeswax inside. If I make a new one, I will use brewers pitch to seal it, for longevity. Beautiful project, and very useful!

Do you have any thrift stores near you? If so keep an eye out there. People often chuck boots just as they've started to get proper comfy.

I've made a video of this process as well! One thing I've done that helps with the seams is to start with the leather warm like you showed, and then pour the wax inside focusing on the seams first. Then reheat the wax inside. Then I hit the seams again with wax and reheat. Builds a nice barrier before finishing.

Joking aside, what about beeswax in the place of the glue? Like stitch it and then seal it with beeswax.
12:00 the trick to using an oven is to heat it up higher than your wanted temp then turn it off. Allow the temperature to stabilize and drop to the temp you want, then add your items to warm. This way the temperature is dropping, not increasing, and you have less chance of burning.
Also put the project on a wood plank. That way the rack doesn't leave marks. Cookie sheets will also cause a burn mark.

I made one of these at an SCA class about 20 years ago. Mine was small, much smaller than the one in this demonstration. No idea what happened to it, I'm sorry to say. We used the same method: cut, sew, soak, stuff (we stuffed ours with sand), dry, then wax.

I used sand packed inside to stretch the leather into bottle shape. Once the leather dried, I knocked all the sand out and used beeswax to seal the inside. I have also made these with an oval insert to form a flat bottom so it can stand on a table.
Found your channel trying to find some pointers for a potential project, and I've loved having your videos on in the background while I work! Helps listening to & watching someone else make awesome stuff while I'm trying to make some cool stuff of my own :) That being said, any ideas for crafting with wooden shields from the Medieval Times entertainment show? Picked some up at a thrift store, and would be interested in how you'd go about tinkering with one as either a LARP/Cosplay piece or wall decor.

I'd use a cuir bouilli technique, submerging the leather in melted wax (the term originally meant leather heated in water to soften it) all the way and leave it on low heat until the wax is soaked in nicely. Drain item of all the wax, heating it if needed to keep too much wax from hardening inside. I've done this for knife sheaths to seal them and protect the knife from rusting. Dang, now I wanna make myself a bottle!
Starting this tomorrow. Two: One for water, one for adult water....fine, rum. One is for rum.

It really easy option I made a few years ago was to use one of those refillable kids plastic water bottles and sew a leather or fake leather cover that went over the top of it. Instantly waterproof, looks however you want, easy to clean and doesn't require any special tools or training!
If anyone wanted to avoid the cement, but still have it bonded, you could get a bit primitive, and make some pine pitch epoxy.
u should look at dried out gourds i have made 2 in my years and one is a weirdly shaped canteen, it looks like a tree root and a more traditional style gourd canteen, i also had made the corks some brass adornments and a sting attached so i cant loose the cork on the battlefield

Do you have a drill press of any kind? Even a cheap harbor freight drill press… chuck your stiching punch in the press… now you have a omni directional punch press!

So I have been binging your series and it's convinced me that I want to start getting into leatherworking. Can you recommend a decent starting kit?
The set I started with was the "beginner tooling kit" from Tandy leather. It doesn't come with a lot and is more on the expensive side but the tools are amazing quality and last. If you aren't 100% sure you want to invest a lot though, there are sets on Amazon that are around $30 that come with everything you need to get going. The quality is lower but they will for sure last you long enough to get a handle on whether or not you want to invest more into the craft.

When I wax leather to make bottles and cups, I use a large double boiler and completely submerge the piece in the wax. The leather will bubble as the air is forced out of it and replaced by wax. Once the leather stops bubbling, the wax has completely penetrated it. This method does require I huge amount of wax though, so not ideal if you're only going to do 1 or 2 pieces total.
this was fun, i want to try makeing one of these.
try spar lacquer as the seal instead of wax, it works better then wax as the heat will not soften it. we also used play sand to shape the leather.
Corning, the guys who own pyrex, make or made bottles and they are pretty tough. Also most glass bottles made from the 1880s and earlier are actually really tough ,modern beer and wine bottles are usually pressure modeled glass and this can be done for cheap using thinner glass walls where as blown and mold glass is usually thicker and stronger , but glass bottles from the wild west era and earlier are actually pretty hard to break.
Complete side note, the common depiction in cowboy movies of someone surviving getting smacked in the hand with a bottle and just getting nocked out, was for comedic effect or to show how tough a guy was because that gag came from the 1910 to 1930s back when whiskey bottles and beer bottles were designed to be tossed around and dropped a few times in shipment and as such, smacking someone over the head with a bottle was acrually attempted murder in most locals in the United states, and was treated the same as trying to hit someone with a hammer

This might be a little too random, but have you ever tried making a helmet rigger/chinstrap out of leather? I have a metal helmet with no insides, and I can't find anyone that shows how to make it yourself.

Very nice! I sell these in my shop, as well as patterns and diy kits for people who don't know what to get. Good call with the cork, I designed all of mine to fit common wine corks! Always have to include a warning with them "resist the urge to squeeze, bc I know you wanna" XD

Wow, that turned out amazing. I've never tried that technique before, I've seen it, but never tried it. I have made them wet molded over a Crown Royal bottle with a flat back. No where near as cool looking as that one though.
I was THINKING of doing that. Do you find shaping it around the bottom comes out clean as well or do you leave it open?
@@SkillTree I made a negative molde of the bottle and lots of hand shaping and a ton of clamps.
The wet molded, flat backed style is a flacket... another weird word to add to the lexicon... These can be with either a negative mold, or a positive mold with perimeter frame and lots of clamp.

I got a leather mug that has a lining of food safe epoxy. Which I am sure would also work here, but would be hard to verify total coverage inside. However, once covered completely there would be no leaks.
Alright a couple things:
1. Barge is fine if you want to risk it. Alternately you can use a good quality PVA glue. Its flexible and nontoxic.
2. Professional just means youre payed to do a job, skilled or not. You sir ARE a professional in that sense. In many senses to be frank.
3. You need to stop giving me projects to add to my ever growing list of projects to make! Gaaaaaahhhhhhh! Fine, ill get started on this now....

You could also use hide glue or hood glue
i use a electric turkey raoster for my wax it live their in the roaster too does get used a lot too, now very garage sale has lease on more more of them
A narrower version would be great as a bullet bag for black powder shooting.
