Hey bookworms! Not sure how many of my viewers were Crichton fans, I know you guys are mostly here for the fantasy talk, but I'm hoping I can convince some of you to pick up some Mr. Crichton books with this video, as he was an author that was very inspiring and influential to me growing up as a teenager in the 1990's.

Man, Michael Crichton was the first author to get a "favorite writer" moniker from me. I was in high school at the late 90s/early 00s and was devouring the sci-fi sections in my local libraries when I stumbled upon either "Andromeda Strain" or "Sphere" - whichever one was first it impressed me so much I promptly went through his whole available body of work, even though at the time the only books i was interested in were science fiction novels - I read The Great Train Robbery, Disclosure, everything, and loved every single one, with the possible exception of Eaters of the dead/13th warrior. Looking at the complete list of his books I noticed that Disclosure was the last one of his I read... well. I have some accrued credits in Audible, guess who's about to get herself some nostalgia, possibly followed by some never before read books... Thanks for reminding me about an author I used to love and sadly, forgot about.

I remember searching the small bookstore by me one summer day for something good to read and pulling stuff off the shelf repeatedly and not finding anything of interest. Eventually, I came across this book with a t-rex skeleton on the cover by this guy I never heard of... flipped the book over, read the synopsis, and said sold. I devoured that book in a day. Obviously, the book was Jurassic Park. I have since read almost everything of his including the books he wrote under the name John Lange. I am so grateful to have experienced Jurassic Park before it became famous. When I found out about his passing away I got chocked up because I also didn't realize that he was fighting cancer. It felt like losing a friend even though I never knew him in person. Great author and a great video. Thanks!

Crichton was a brilliant storyteller and I love the diversity of his works. I don't need to agree with an author on every issue in order to enjoy their stories. Otherwise there'd be hardly anything to read. Arthur Conan Doyle, for example, is one of my favorite authors ever - and the man seriously believed in the existence of fairies! :D

Then he takes your thoughts and makes it reality then he takes your reality and his rules he set and puts them on its head, and you can't let go. The Lost World is such a great novel. I read a few chapters of Sphere at work but someone took the book and never returned it 😑.
Dragon teeth is a great book so far, although it was completed by another author it still has Crichton's touch. Definitely one of the best! I watch as many interviews of his I can find.

Did you read “Travels”. I’m not a non-fiction person, but MAN he had an adventurous life! The chapters on when he climbed Kilimanjaro...Wow! If you haven’t read this you should. Like I said, I don’t generally like reading non-fiction, but this was Fantastic!
Sphere is still one of my favorite books!
I don’t remember much about Congo. I can’t remember if I read Micro...I feel like I did, but if I did it must not have made much of an impact.
I definitely liked his sci-fi/horror stuff better than the more “realistic” stuff like Disclosure and AirFrame.
I miss authors like this! I miss Authors who write amazing stand-alone books. I love a lot of the series’s I have read, but it’s daunting a lot of the time to jump in with a new book knowing you are making a 3-14 book commitment! Lol!

@@mikesbookreviews Amen to that. Tolkien managed to build a complete fantasy world (complete with languages!) and tell the most epic fantasy story of all time with only five books. Now everyone seems to feel they need ten or more door-stoppers. Even Malazan (which I am a huge fan of) could have done with a bit of editing.

I thank Michael Crichton for helping me transition from teen/young adult books into more mature fiction. While I think I've outgrown most of his books and now mainly read the same fantasy series that you do, I still appreciate the books of his that I did read. Did you ever read The Great Train Robbery? It's one of his most underrated and also my favorite of his that I read.
Edit: I reached the point in the video where you talk about The Great Train Robbery. It really was a true page-turner!

I’m now reading his remaining works and it’s great. Takes me back to my younger days.
Thanks for the video. My top five: Jurassic Park, The Great Train Robbery, Eaters of the Dead, Congo and Sphere.

Crichton is such an important writer for me
He's the one responsible for the eventual creation of my favorite movie, Jurassic Park, which then lead me to discovering that it was based on a novel
And that was the first novel I'd ever read, at the simple age of 8
Did I understand any of the concepts? Mostly not
But the book certainly scared the living shit out of me, I wasn't expecting it to be such a gore-fest

Thanks for the review of Michael Crichton, he was pretty much my first author that I read a book from and that book would have been Jurassic Park. At school we had to do a AR test on books that we had read and I thought I could skip the book and remember the movie That's before I realized that the movies are always never the same as the book. When I got to go retake my AR test I actually read the book and enjoyed the book a lot more than the movie. So far I have read The Lost world pirates latitude and dragon teeth

So I love sci-fi, whether it be Star Wars, Star Trek, Ender's Game, Timeline, and many more, I enjoy the stories and the technologies represented in them. Please give Micro a read because it is worth it. I will say there are parts that you can tell weren't plot ideas from Crichton but they only slightly diminish the over all story. What I mainly love about Crichton's techo-thrillers is the technologies and how they are explained and explored enough for the story. My Crichton list would have to be favorite to least favorite: Timeline, Prey, Jurassic Park, Micro, Andromeda Strain, Sphere, State of Fear, Lost World, Congo, Terminal Man, Next.

Been a fan since the 1990s. Loved all of them but I think my favorite is Timeline. I remember being so excited as a teen that I understood Eaters of the Dead was a Beowulf re-telling. That and Sphere are probably my second favorites. Have you seen the OG Westworld movie and Looker? I loved those. I find my sci-fi fix where I can.
I'm still trying to figure out how those movie studios managed to screw up perfectly good stories he provided them with: Congo, Sphere and Timeline.
Sidebar: I also high enjoy the Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child collaborations, starting with Relic. also good storytellers

I grew up with him as well. I think we are close to the same age. I'm 41. I originally only read him and John Grisham. A friend of mine introduced me to Stephen King making fun of me for only reading lawyer and science books. Stephen King books have more heart than anybody I've ever read.

I liked Congo because of the 30 seconds of Bruce Campbell 😂
You're right on with Airframe, that book made me mad. The twist at the end wasn't a twist, she knew it all along. He could of removed the nonsense with the union and it wouldn't change the book.

I almost fell off my chair when watching Westworld because: you can identify the AIs by THEIR HANDS 😂 THAT MOVIE IS 70S!!!! It seems like a guided guess about what should be hard to replicate, Crinchton being himself, but if it was just a throw it in, man, that aged amazingly.
And now I'm here trying to pick which of his books to read first

Mike, I came to this video late so I am not sure if you are still checking the comments. I paused the video when you mentioned Tom Clancy and asked for folks to post in the comments if you should read Clancy. So far your taste in books closely mirrors my own, though we both know that is not a guarantee that you will enjoy Clancy because I do. I do suggest that at some point you give Clancy a try. I would start with The Hunt for Red October. Avoid the audiobook, which I first picked up on cassette many years ago. It reminded me of David Lynch's version of Dune in that it is so chopped up up if you don't know the whole story going in you would still be lost at the end. I loved the movie, but again it is only a shadow of the whole story. If you like the book, try the rest of the Jack Ryan series. I'm was never a fan of his other series, but your mileage may vary. Enjoy

The early King movies were more a victim of the eras they were made. Carrie, Cujo, Dead Zone and even Running Man & Lawn Mower Man would've been a lot different if first made in the last 10 years. It took Kubric changing a lot of the story to make a good movie back then. Imo
