'Artic Blast' on the radio was waiting for the 'threat to life' as well to be announced also Gordon! I'm shouting at the radio 'it's bloody winter for christs sake' anyway anything to make life action packed ! great video loved the Robin Hood bit as well 👍
They're really laying it on, Ian. If they keep on then I'll be trading one of my bikes for a dog-sled. I think that old yew tree predates Domesday and was connected with a Saxon church before the Conquest, so it will have been a mature tree back in the days of King John.
Love this Talk Info. Many Ways of Life are now influenced by social media the jenie is out no going back Cheers Gordon for Clipping In on very cold day here too 🚲🆒
There are so many layers of history connected to the site of Hartshead church - if the icy snap runs on and that becomes my regular loop for a week or two then I might be trotting out a few more tales of yore! I've had half a dozen requests for the winter boots review so that might be next on the list.
We've done well to get half way through November with really mild weather. I live over at Huddersfield so it's the same weather as you. Ive been enjoying similar rides to you, Holme Moss, Emley, at the windmills above Victoria etc, and it seemed like it would never end. However, at work today I realised that the dreaded turbo will probably be making an appearance soon. Luckily I run too, so there's going to be more running than cycling for me for a while. Great video as usual.
It's snowing as I type this just before 8 PM but it'll be interesting to see what it amount to in a few hours. As you say, we've been lucky with the anticyclonic system holding temperatures high. This morning would've been fine but there was a lot of rain on Sunday evening which duly froze.
Haha... cheers, Kevin. I don't have a car so this is my shopping & errand bike but it's a decent choice when you think the roads might be a bit slippery. With hindsight his circuit would've been fine on the road bike but there's no harm in playing safe.
I live in Cheshire and, although we had 3ins of snow overnight, it was 3 degrees at 11am and hadn't frozen overnight....so the roads were wet but clear of ice. No chance of getting into the Peak but at least a flat local spin worked. Did it on fixed for added interest...and less cleaning. All the best.
That's a good combination and ice-free roads are one less thing to worry about. From what I could see, the thaw began around midday here. Extra points for fixed wheel!
@@jonathangreen7111 Great for pedalling dynamics though. When I lived in Paris & rode up to Picardie I'd see professionals riding fixed - silky smooth revs.
Monday afternoon miles, by eck, I'd got the washing dry and busy starching collars!! Anything but ice on road bike for me, I just can't do indoor stuff, the hamsters done more miles on my turbo than I have.
Ice - of any hue - is a spoiler for me too. I've taken enough hard falls on the stuff, even with MTB width tyres, but thankfully it doesn't usually hang around too long. Long range forecast points to mild, wet & windy by the weekend,
Cheers, Matt. We had nearly 10cm overnight but it's been thawing since 11am. With a bit of luck I'll get out tomorrow afternoon - on the wide tyres if in doubt.
Glad you got out. The black ice was the spoiler around here but by midday there was some decent pedalling to be had. I could've taken a road bike but I played safe with the MTB - all 30 lbs of it.
I wonder if it was Nottingham, Mark? They lay claim to him and what's left of Sherwood Forest, but these folkloric legends were surprisingly mobile! Btw : I got you into the Strava screenshot gallery again.... haha
Another interesting video. I am interested in seeing a vid about the winter boots. I do about 90% of my riding indoors but I still like the outdoors. It just isn’t as time efficient for me.
Cheers, John. I'll do the winter boots video before the end of the week, hopefully after another outdoor ride in near-zero conditions. I'll also reference some of my older cold-riding footwear for general interest. Indoor riding is extremely time-efficient - it was the Mon-Fri backbone of my training in the old days.

I’ve binned off Strava for my last 5 rides and enjoyed them more for it. Got sick of it beeping at me on my phone when I sat down somewhere picturesque for a 5 minute rest and a slug of electrolytes. On returning home it’s trying to shame me by telling me I’m no longer the Local Legend on a well used lane in my area. Sorry Strava….. couldn’t give a stuff!!
They try to introduce 'analysis' into every outing and push either fitness scores or one-line assessments of the ride, even tho' the vast majority of us won't benefit from that. We know if we're tired, and we have a pretty good idea why we're tired, and we're the ones riding into the wind, rain, or low temperatures, but Strava lacks context and simply bulldozes ahead. Good policy, David - enjoy the views and the electrolytes!
Good attitude re the indoor/training. I think the vast majority of cyclists agree that outdoor is preferred, of course. But the Velominati old school riders that shit on turbos/Zwift isn’t useful for people that just want to get into cycling in the first place.
Spot-on, Alex. I've no time for that sort of fundamentalist stuff - very often they're just extrapolating their own preferences to create pseudo-rules to define a 'proper cyclist'. In terms of fitness I had some of my best racing seasons on the back of balanced outdoor + indoor winters.
good
Le roi des neiges dit merci :))
Well,I live in Baildon West Yorkshire ,we are already 2mm deep in snow lol. Great content thank you for posting!!
Thanks, Graham. At 7am I can see about 75mm on the garden fence and garage roof - so not a 2nd ice age, but cycling might be tricky for a few hours.

Thanks Highlighter
Great trivia content. Whatever type of video you post next I'm sure it will be entertaining as always.

You know when it's cold in that neck of the woods - No elderly people at that bus stop at Windy Bank Lane and Sixth Avenue !!!
Haha - that road can feel arctic at times when the air currents seem to be coming straight over from the top of Holme Moss.

Wise move, Geoff. We had something of a thaw down here after midday but now it's freezing hard again - it'll be a Torvill & Dean special tomorrow AM.
