I never drove this series but my 79yr old mom in the UK still drives a 100% original 2001 WRX with approx 70,000 miles on it, FSH etc. She's 80 this year and we're flying over from Aus in July to give it a decent run again, (and of course to celebrate her Birthday too I suppose). Last time was a road trip through Scotland in 2019 with a very memorable run across Skye for a ferry.... Sadly she only drives about 500/1000 miles per year now but then again we're considering moving back to the UK in a couple of years so you never know where it might end up?
Keeping them well undersealed is a must. I don't use my car when there's salt on the road. They also depending on the car usually are in as new condition, my 21 Crown is an example, you can eat your dinner off the underside. Their Shakken test means their vehicles are held to a higher standard than ours
@@chappy2121 I try not to but I cant help myself, its too much fun 😂 Longs you check and redo underseal yearly and treat anything before it can start to rust it should be fine, mine still looking ace underneath after 5 winters in the UK
My 218 HP X reg 4 door actually understeered, well compared to the Opel Manta anyway, I was told the backseat very comfy and there was no need to slow down for roundabouts. The built-in understeer was a terrific safety feature. What a car!!
I'll never forget when I took my eldest a driving experience soon after he passed his test. It included a 'hot lap' which was in an Impreza driven by a professional. I was offered a seat in the back along with my younger boy, which we gladly took. Hammering round the course and into the bends I thought we were going to crash! The seat belt was the only thing keeping me from being thrown abound, how that car stayed on the track I'll never know! Afterwards my legs felt like rubber....
Makes me miss my Subaru. There was just something special about late '90s/ early '00s Subaru designs and engineering that are just missing in their new cars.
This is the generation of Subaru that made me fall in love with them. I remember a yellow estate I heard the rumble at idle sounded soo beautiful. I was only a kid too young to know anything about cars
These cars were always 10 seconds or so quicker than my Saab in hill climbs . That tenacious grip is something else! I remember first seeing one of these back in 1996 and being stunned by its performance, the way it squatted and took off was like nothing else at the time.
Gotta love these scoobies, driving the classic is so more raw than the newage impreza. I imported my type R v5 limited 2 years ago before the boom in prices. These are the closest car you're going to get to a 22b without the £200,000 price tag.. I would have a fresh imported type R over the p1 as British weather and salty roads have taken its toll on majority of them.
That looks like fantastic fun. I had had one, it wouldn't get used all that often, but each time it came out it would most definitely be used illicitly. Far cry from the 83 Subaru GL hardtop I drove part of high school. Had a washing machine motor, with about has much horsepower with the vaguest 5 speed I've ever driven. (Give credit though, I taught myself stick on that car with no instruction and it was reasonably forgiving)
The US didn’t get the turbo in the 1st Gen. I had a 2.5RS sedan. 160hp, it was a fun car. Of course shortly after I bought the 2.5, Subaru announced the WRX to come to the US.
Another fantastic and detailed videos as always Matt. I actually had the pleasure of filming a few weeks ago at a Subaru themed cars and coffee event at The Motorist. Sadly no two door versions though there were a few MK1 cars including a JDM STI. The wide bodied 22b are said to change hands fir serious money these days. The Impreza and Lancer Evolution were the road going rally cars that every bit racer aspired to after their Citroen Saxo back in the day.
Great looking car Matt and that exterior tea shelf is really a tea bar 🤔 room for 5 or 6 cups and also I had an STI once but it was completely different 😂 and ending up having to go to a clinic to have a repair 😂👍🏻.
Fascinating to see a car such as this in this "honest" unrestored condition. I would have thought the (presumed?) value of these would mean they all are restored to pristine condition by now and locked away. Or maybe they arent worth that much compared to other JDM oldies.
Oooooooh Type R! Very expensive bit of kit these days! if you're ever up north east Scotland I'd be happy for you to do a video on my 03 Spec C Limited 👍 I'd come to you but she's a thirsty bugger, and only 50L tank 😂
I had a sonic blue Version 3 STi Type R back in 1997 (p reg) when there were just a couple in the UK, Autocar road tested the other. The seats had 555 stitched into them. Mine has a Momo style Steering wheel and was far nicer than the one in this Video. Sadly I sold it in 2001 along with the private plate B12 SUB which I believe later ended up on a 22B. Great car indeed. The car in this video hasn’t got the red input metal pipes, they are silver….. that’s odd!
Hi! Same here, in France! I have a 2000 (MY00) Version VI in 86F (Cool Grey Metallic), mostly original and in perfect condition! What a shame that you have to sell it... What car will be your next one? (Ariel Atom?)

tut tut tut so many things wrong with that Scooby, I have had 2 and done my research. The boost gauge is not part of the original, never had a boost gauge etc,,, But the import was much better than the UK version, 278 BHP instead of 221, Closed deck engine, better suspension, sounds like a PGP gearbox? and a load of other things, I loved my WRX until it was too expensive to justify for me :(
This version has an open deck block. Closed deck were only from 92-96 and even then not all of them got it. Suspension wasn't particularly better just different for where ever there were sold. Mine has the optional extra UK spec Bilstein suspension on it which is far better than the stiffer JDM stuff
I love it, but that wood trim inside would have to go as soon as possible. I’m sure factory replacement is not easy to find, but I would have to try. Who has an original Impreza Sti and turns the interior into a Rover? 75 👀
These original WRXes were available not just with wood trim but also beige leather and a 4-speed automatic! It is certainly not correct for a STi Type R though, but dark green automatic WRXs with beige leather and woodgrain did indeed leave the Subaru factory. A vicar special perhaps? :)
Don't knock the beetle, Emile Porsche worked for VW before setting up on his own and apart from the bodyshell raided the VW parts bin for his first car. A first generation Impreza that hasn't rotten away, that's a rarity. That exhaust note is glorious!
JDMs are typically cleaner, though a few winters in the UK can soon change that!

What about the honda s660
Some cars grow old gracefully and actually look better....this is one of them special cars that has never in my opinion grown old 👌
There is no 'triangle of doom' with the single rear wiper - Ian's 'TOD' is the bit that's left unswept when two front wipers don't overlap properly.
Never confuse the Triangle of Doom with the Corners of Disappointment.

Great car I particularly like the simplicity of the MK1 design.
The sound of my youth. Every time I hear one, it takes me back to playing colin mcrae rally on the playstation.
What a terrific beast of a car that model was! Outstanding! A great review of a classic.
A lot of valid information but also a fair bit of miss information (I've owned 8 of them).

Yes. Hero for doing this
How is it a 3?
You seem to jump intermittently between it being a 2 door and a 3 door. Seems like a great video apart from this basic error….
Now we're talking
Speedo must surely be MPH rather than KMH? 180 is not particularly quick for KMH
Japanese market cars are speed limited to 180 km/hr. Export models had a 260 km/hr speedo.

Earthing kit and suspension are not standard.
They are on this, its a homologation special
@@furiousdriving the earthing kit definitely isn’t standard, it’s a very popular modification in Japan so a previous owner probably fitted it.
Is this really the rarest? I thought it was the 22B or P1, although I've never seen this one before 🤔
