Rick Steves, America's most respected authority on European travel, writes European travel guidebooks, and hosts travel shows on public television and public radio.
I'm from Oslo, and can testify to the accuracy of the content. Mr. Rick Steves' research skills is unparalleled.
You shouldn’t have to share your city with immigrants
Got into him recently. What an intelligent and interesting man. The best travel shows I've ever seen.
He's pretty underrated. I like all his guides except Egypt (definitely not tourist friendly)
So true
Thank you for the memories. I lived in Oslo for three years in the 70's.... My son was born there.
How much it's changed! But the best thing were the people! I'm still corresponding with the first person I met there! Oslo it's definitely a "MUST SEE" Really Norway is a must see. Most beautiful county and cleanest... Thanks again.
Where do you live now?
The rail journey from Oslo to Bergan and back is quite something.
Immigrants need to leave immediately
I have became a fan of Rick Steve .... You have been showing me entire Europe, I don't have money to travel overseas but you are fulfilling some of my dreams. Thank you Rick.
Most of Europe is a dump man. Come visit the USA if you really want an enjoyable trip.
Rick is amazing! I got to attend an in-person lecture he gave in our community when he visited as part of a speaking tour. 💯

"By accident"??

I just discovered him and can't stop watching . He is one of the last with this type of videos now it's all crowded by vlogs.
"...and I have a cousin here who owns a boat." Rick must have found a genie's bottle on his travels for he certainly has a charmed life.
I loved my time InOslo. Sailing on a cruise ship into Oslo harbor was breathtakingly beautiful. I recognized the architecture as very much the same I see InMy native Minnesota.
Oslo a great city with an intesting history sailing across the at world on long boats.Examples seen in the museum s great to see our Norse history
I'm from N. Dakota/Minnesota and have German blood line. I am 60+ years old and I have very few times had a overwhelming emotion like this one being Norway feels like home...I don't know. Thanks.

Back when I visited Norway in 2017 for 15 days I was in Oslo at the beginning and the end of my trip. Charming city!
Thanks alot Mr Rick. For fulfilment of our dreams. We cannot travel to such places. God bless u.
My cousins live in oslo and it's a beautiful city.😍
I'm not Norwegian, not even European, but I really love this country and this city was established by my Viking idol, Harald Hardrada. The last great viking king.

That makes such good sense; Americans are faced with perils and worries from medical bankruptcies and facing old age in poverty. We have a ghastly inadequate system that is greatly in need of reform.🗽 Let Norway lead the way!🌄👑
For all that Oslo is large it still manages feel much smaller. I was so impressed how clean, friendly and safe Oslo. It is a walkers’ paradise. It’s also easy to get around.
Come to Singapore.
We are like Oslo except that we don't have the chilly climate 🤓
KT Ng I have been blessed to visit Singapore. You’re 100% correct in saying that it’s clean, friendly and safe as well as easy to get around. My family and I spent several days there and loved every minute that we spent there. The “night tours” at the zoo and strolling through the parks were our favorite things to do. We couldn’t understand the signs on the buses and trains forbidding bringing durian fruit onto them until we went to an outdoor market and actually got a whiff of one. They have to be the absolutely most disgustingly smelling things that we’ve ever had the misfortune to have smelled. I hear that the fruit is very delicious, but the smell was so horrible that I just wasn’t even brave enough to taste the fruit!
Come to my lovely country Cyprus! We have amazing beaches, meditterannean food, great nightlife and beautiful greek women!!!!

I haven't enjoyed my visit to Oslo. I loved my visit to Oslo!
Hi Rick, many thanks for sharing the gorgeous Norway video. I truly enjoyed watching your lovely video. I gracefully visited Norway in May 2015 and would like to be visiting the lovely country there again soon.
How beautiful country ♥️☺️☺️♥️
7:52 “... to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Columbus NOT discovering America”. Love it.
I know. I was hoping he wouldve explained that more.
@@kmb-wy1to he probably meant that despite the myth we are taught in elementary school, Christopher Columbus was not the first person to discover America:
1) Native Americans were already here and it was their land - they discovered it ~20,000 years ago (during the last Ice Age ... they crossed the temporary land bridge from Asia ...glaciers so large, the sea level was lower).
2) He wasn’t even the first white man to dock here; the Vikings had made many landings way before him.

Where are you from???
Wow. Norway is just awesome country and Oslo is the most beautiful city in the world! (just my opinion) Greetings from Finland.
+juho jämsä I respect your opinion but i think Stockholm beats Oslo with it's Islands and water :)
+Enannaman Ensson Norway is beautiful, but Oslo is nothing special when compared with let`s say Baltic capitals like Riga, Tallin, Vilnius (without soviet heritage blocks of course)
New main library, new Munch museum, new national museum and much, much more since this video was made.
Thank you so much for this immersive tour. I have been to these parts of the World but unfortunate for me, it was in winter and i did not opportune to take in the splendour that is present there.
Hi Steve congrats Oslo is beautiful city
Great video! Rick Steves continues to party! Back to where it all began, summer metropolis of Oslo, where his marauding Viking ancestors started it all.

Great vid, the train to Bergen is stunning, via Voss, a must-see at winter time during the Polar Nights. I rather enjoyed Norway's cuisine, amazing fish soups, best salmon ever, smorgasbords. Simple straight forward quality food, it was delicious. Clean country, pleasant people, one of the safest esp for women visitors. Very attractive people too.

Spectacular Oslo...... Europe is the paradise in this universe.
Maybe physically but remember that Europe gave us WWI, WWII, the slave trade, Communism through Marx, Fascism and N***ism, the Spanish inquisition, the Crusades. and many other horrors over the centuries.
Lee Roggy - And the rest of the world was all love and peace, right? LOL. Warfare, slavery, oppression was and is everywhere. People vote with their feet. Europeans are not risking their and their childrens' life to flee across the sea to Africa...

In general people do not pay 50% in taxes. I pay about 36% and my salary is pretty high. The more you earn, the higher the taxes get. So people with lower income do NOT have to pay 50% in taxes.
we are heading here soon....SUPER excited
Very, very interesting. Thank you
11:40 Wrong. Practically no Norwegian pays 50% tax. It is true the absolute maximum you must pay is a full 50%, but there is a step wise increase, which means people that earn more, will pay more, not only in monetary figures, but also in percent. In 2019, earning up to $50.000 a year incurs 29.4% tax. Earning $200.000 a year would set you back 45,7%. Anyone having a mortgage can deduct that interest on their income, which in turn reduces tax pressure, as long as you have a loan.
I really want to live in Norway. Amazing country
Your employer pays "employment tax", you pay income tax, then if you are gonna buy something you pay "merverdiavgift" (VAT) -- it all adds up to more than you want to admit! The communist government (AP/H/KFP/FRP you name it, all of them) take more from what you create than you get yourself. Prove me wrong!... (you can't)...
@@daNorse @daNorse I'm not going into political discussions here. I am an economist, former CFO, and know very well which employer paid expenses occur upon employment. The statement is that a "Normal Norwegian worker" generally pays around 50% income tax, which is untrue.
@@Jurgh909 I'm also an economist, financial analyst for 20 years in the stock exchange.
So, I challenge you to do this simple calculation: Sum up employer's payroll tax, employees payroll tax, and finally add the VAT on top (excluding the abundant special taxes like on alcohol, tobacco, tax on real estate, etc. etc.) Personally, I mean we should abolish the income tax totally.
@@daNorse You are still missing the point. The statement in the video is that an average Norwegian pays 50% income tax.
Local cuisine is up to ones own taste. There are many decent local dishes but they maay seem strange to many. Many dishes that we take for granted have their origin lamb in cabbage, norwegian stew and norwegian style meatballs with potatoes, gravy and peas for example.
And naturally tonnes of different very local fish, potato and meat variants.

You can see huge difference between rainy Bergen and sunny Oslo I think west and north is nice for sightseeing but southern and eastern Norway is more hospitable
haha
Overall great, but I'm disappointed Rick didn't show the best Vigeland statue: the man fighting four babies

If the result is good, all are right. Let past pass. Let each one take a free choice to enjoy life. This is the times of many masters.
In this moment of great change, the old skills and new thoughts both work. But I think from now on, the new order works.

Can't Rick Steves for once visit one of these northern European cities when it isn't on one of their rare sunny days. Go there in the winter for a change so we can see what it is really like to live in one of these countries.
What's wrong with winter? Winter is the best thing about Norway, there's snow and fantastic skiing opportunities throughout most of the winter, as opposed to other European cities where it's still cold. And btw, sunny days are fairly common in Oslo, it's not like this is "rare". Like most Western European countries we do have rain, yes. The one negative about Norwegian climate is that we have shorter summers, as we don't really start to get regular days above 20C before June.
But yeah, if you're looking for somewhere just to get a tan there are obviously better options than Norway.
@@sh0werp0wer amazing Norway wanna live there
The tax percentage is NOT 50% for most Norwegians, its closer to 38%. These people paying half in tax must have a large income
Munch's painting is a reminder of danger. I don't take it as an expression of depression..
There is always a way out - sincere service to all in spite of difficulties.
Happy to see the diversity in culture.
this is the most beautiful European capitals
great oslo
Going to Oslo so watched this. Love Rick Steve's videos. But I find the ten year old comments about how content Norwegians are as very interesting in comparison to what is going on right now socially and politically. It is no longer 1 in 5 are immigrants I am guessing. Good in concept, but outside variables make for less romantic idealism. Yet, I am looking forward to our trip. Thanks Steve
