I drove the inbound Kennedy about an hour after sunrise while on a roadtrip in late June, 2004, nearly identical weather, and the sight of the early morning sun reflecting off of the north sides of the downtown buildings in the distance was beyond breathtaking!
LOVE your videos!! You definitely captured the good views of the city! Glad you had good filming weather! I drive all those routes you filmed so many times! Felt like I was driving them =)
at 0:58 on the left is the express lanes called the "reversible" since the flow of traffic can go either way "inbound" like in AM rush hour traffic or "outbound" during the PM rush hours or when ever CDOT ( Chicago dept. of transportation ) see fit to have more lanes in any direction
Heres some facts: The Kennedy Exressway turn into the Dan Ryan Expressway at I.290. The Dan Ryan expressway end at the I.94 and I.57 intercharge and becomes the Bishop Ford Freeway south of Chicago.
And not a single traffic jam of any kind... Shocking! 😱 I might have to (and probably will) piece together 5 or 6 clips from our recent trip, just to get one video!
Amazing video as always. I live an hour west of Chicago. And you made that drive seem stress less. The Kennedy and Dan Ryan expressways are nightmares Monday - Friday 8am-8pm
@benlonghighway yeah Illinois has a thing called an I Pass Lane, it's an express lane that you don't have to even stop up at a toll gate, but this is like the only toll in Illinois that's really weird because you have to stop at a gate even if you have an I Pass
With IH 90/94, must get reconstructed. Get complete frontage rds. Exits after intersections and entrances before intersections. Below grade level and elevated sections, must go to grade level, while intersections here go to below grade level, including frontage rds at intersections. This, must be double decked, with grade level local lanes and underground express lanes. On outsides of frontage rds, must be sidewalks. On edeges of frontage rds, must get bicyle lanes, with barriers.
There are service area's in the center of the Florida Turnpike and JFK Memorial Highway in Maryland & Delaware (I-95) but none like this that are on an elevated highway or bridge.
Grand Rapids..Which way did you drive to get there?..Did you go I-94 to 131 through Kalamazoo? If so Kalamazoo is my hometown and I miss it so much. Nice vid btw I love Chicago we used to go there a lot since we were so close to it.
UPDATE in 2014 the "circle interchange " was renamed the Jane Burn Interchange in honor of Jane Burn the first female mayor of Chicago ( In office from 1979-1983 ) plus it has few not to nice names as well (which i will not type here ) due to the heavy congestion mostly coming from the south ( Dan Ryan side)
One time i had to go to a conference in Itasca, Il and i came it around 8 and i was just amazed by how people drive out there, nothing but tailgating and cutting people off.
Is there not a freeway in Chicago that has a reverse alignment where traffic moves on the left side and the ramps to surface streets occur in the median? I know that this was proposed in the 1970s but I don't know if it was built. However I think the SPUI interchange is a better solution. (Single Point Urban Interchange)
Thanks to Google's street view on Maps I know that the McDonald's at 5:27 is no longer there. At least according to the southeast bound side which was shot in April 2018(yes Google posts the approximate date Month/Year).
The tollway on 5:26 is the stangest tollway in the U.S.A, Because the Mcdonalds (like Chicago's 'L' Subway) is in the center of the highway. Is there anywhere in the world like this? I don't think so. Or do I.
My mother was born and raised in northern suburb. I have been up and down LSD countless times. At about 3:10 on the left is Lake Point Tower, where I spent a few summers growing up. After that when LSD does that pair of turns, first to the west and then to the south before going through Grant Park, that used to be much sharper curves, which resulted in many many accidents. They finally changed it to the current configuration. It’s so much smoother since cars had to slow down to a near crawl since it was basically a right turn.
Intersecting and parallel rr tracks, must get elevated. Pedestrian bridges, must be replaced by pedestrian tunnels. The subway too, must go underground. By schools, golf courses, and malls, must be pedestrian tunnels. Gas pipelines intersecting, must have hike and bike trail tunnels. The road, must have automation, that vehicles are driven by computers and joysticks and hover, that vehicles float on magnets. Also, subway trains float on magnets.
Do you have a video of the expressway to the O'Hare airport ? Could you do a remake of the route through Chicago featured in the movie Blues Brothers ?
No and No, I don't live anywhere near Chicago. However, some of those chase scenes were filmed in Milwaukee and I do have a video of part of that highway (I-794).
@Freewayjim ok. PS: I have been on the skyway several times, going both directions, and I filmed the tall bridge at night during the day. I drove on it twice, and I recently filmed it on 12-21-22 during the day and at night going to and from Chicago.
he was driving through at 8am on a Sunday morning... I'll assume you're from LA and having driven in both cities many times I can tell u they are both about equally as bad
Guess again! Their people that leave Chicago, which become a number of new residents in Birmingham. Their's numbers of Illinois License Plate Vehicles in Birmingham, beyond the last 5 years.

I liked it !!! Smooth roads , shine weather ,cloudless, you have done great work !!!
Great video Jim. Always a pleasure to ride with ya, Boss!!
As someone from the CHI...I was very impressed how you handled Chicago traffic...
Thank you!
Cool vid. The haze makes the skyline seem further away than it really is.
man i love the chicago skyline.. thanks for sharing

Great video JIM! i enjoy your videos and I can't for the next one! :)

I am familiar with reversible lanes and how they operate, these were among the earliest built in the country if I'm not mistaken.
Heres some facts: The Kennedy Exressway turn into the Dan Ryan Expressway at I.290. The Dan Ryan expressway end at the I.94 and I.57 intercharge and becomes the Bishop Ford Freeway south of Chicago.
Very great video :)
This route gives you the best view of the skyline without being on the Lake.
And not a single traffic jam of any kind... Shocking! 😱 I might have to (and probably will) piece together 5 or 6 clips from our recent trip, just to get one video!
I felt early in the morning was our best chance :)

The name of the tunnel @ 2:30 is called Hubbard's Cave.
it might be posted as 55 MPH speed zone but in reality the traffic goes more like 65 -70 when traffic is that light
Very fitting soundtrack for a drive thru Chicagoland -- The home & birthplace of House Music.
This, is what Birmingham, Alabama must be like soon, since this metro area boomed in recent years! In addition, this metro area is beyond a million!
Nice drive Jim. Thanks, for telling who was Dan Ryan, but what is by the way the Cook Co. Board of Commissioners?
I-90/94 Express? Reminds me of the I-271 Express Lanes in Cleveland...

Jane Byrne.
@@Freewayjim stand corrected
@aliesander The people that run Cook County, where Chicago is located. Thanks.
@0marigolds Thank you! 295, Maryland's Antique Highway :)
I live in Indiana.
@TheNate1810 Thanks, yes I was very fortunate with regards to the weather for most of the trip.
One time i had to go to a conference in Itasca, Il and i came it around 8 and i was just amazed by how people drive out there, nothing but tailgating and cutting people off.
I see the Skyway is still signed as "TO I-90", even the map doesn't dare put an I-90 shield on it!
It's a "bridge," you know. :)
@dave11686 Thanks!

You Used this Song in another Video from you Right?
I might have used it in an earlier video.
I agree. It's just not even far. Just, should be in the middle, instead.
@sokalove42 I went I-94 to I-196 to Grand Rapids, bypassing Kalamazoo.
my exit is Lake Street off 90W should i take "local lanes"??
Yes, probably.
Did you pay with an I-pass, or did you pay with cash for the toll on the Chicago skyway?
Cash
@Freewayjim ok. PS: I have been on the skyway several times, going both directions, and I filmed the tall bridge at night during the day. I drove on it twice, and I recently filmed it on 12-21-22 during the day and at night going to and from Chicago.
6:06 on is my 'ole stomping grounds'..... considered 'the region'
On edges of road, must have a lane with barrier for gas and electric bikes and gas and electric scooters.
Not even close.
Is this the busiest highway in the Midwest?
he was driving through at 8am on a Sunday morning... I'll assume you're from LA and having driven in both cities many times I can tell u they are both about equally as bad
Usually after the exit to I-55 then the I-94 I-90 comes toward a bridge and then the choke point comes.
5:18 Doesn't this turnpike have an electronic toll system? I think it should. . .
It's also called the Chicago skyway
Guess again! Their people that leave Chicago, which become a number of new residents in Birmingham. Their's numbers of Illinois License Plate Vehicles in Birmingham, beyond the last 5 years.
What's funny is the IQ levels in both cities go up when that happens. :)
Whats highways are in your intro?
+PartyTeenFailVideos The Downtown Connector in Atlanta (I-75/85 Southbound)
