The original tune was never designed to be an anthem sung by many people but essential a bar song that was meant to highlight one person's singing ability. Plus the song has notes that are hard to reach for most people, which is why I personally think that there are better songs for the US to pick as their anthem (Battle Hymn of the Republic, America the Beautiful, Columbia, etc)
