1993 MTEG STADIUM SUPER 1600 BUGGY SEASON COMPILATION

SUPER 1600 CLASS HISTORY;
Sometimes referred to as ''buggies'' the super 1600 class of vehicle goes back to the early days of off-road racing in the desert, and was one of the original classes featured in the first stadium races. They are single-seat ''formula'' cars of the sport. Light and agile, they are open-wheeled machines that carry nothing extra like doors, fenders or a passenger seats that might impede their one mission in life -- to go as fast as the laws of gravity will allow, and then some. A competitive super 1600 race car ranges in price from $35,000 to $75,000, and has relatively reasonable maintenance expenses. All are powerd by rear-mounted, 1600cc-1650cc motors, and the vehicles weigh in at around 1100 to 1200 pounds, Engines choices inclue Volkswagen and Toyota, and all use turn brakes to better negotiate the tight, quick turns. The field of qualifiers at each is split into two heats. with the top nine finishers from each moving to the main event. Seasoned veterans such as Frank Arciero Jr., Bob Gordon and Jerry Whelchel -- all class champions -- continue to be dominant competitors, but find themselves under constant challenge from a horde of other top guns like Marty Coyne, Kevin Smith, Jimmy Nichols, Gary Gall, Marty Hart, the Herbst Brothers and others. Heading into the 93 season, Whelchel, the defending champion, and Arciero, the 1987 and 1991 title holder, continue their battle for all-time class wins. For the 93 season, the class will be without 1989 and 90 champion Mitch Mustard who decided to retire.
