These documentaries are absolulely fabulous, bring my childhood flooding back. I never cease to be amazed to find my Matchbox toy sportscar favourites of that era really became legends in this golden age of motor racing. Ford GT40, Porsceh 908, Ferrari p3/4 , 512, matra etc... simply magical!

Jacky was an all round champion in every discipline , best ever period!!!

@@gjb4868 People assume because they look like a well designed car they are. Chris Amon said the FordGT Mk11 was as comfortable as a race car could be, also said it was heavy to drive, noisy & hot. The engine was a couple of inches behind the driver , separated by a sheet of metal & about an inch of seat padding. I think back in horror at the Formula one cars of the sixties, the driver sitting on a Moulded foam insert on top of the fuel tank.

Violation of what rules??? Other then the moveable aerodynamics tail flaps, Which were deemed necessary to keep the car on track, Porsche met all the rules for the new FIA group 5 sports car class. Checkout the famous photo at the yard at werk one with all 25 lined up ready to rock

@@beagle7622 When the CSI inspectors first visited the Porsche works to verify 917 "production" there were three completed cars and 18 partialy done, with seven complete sets of parts, making 28 possible cars. The inspectors stated this wasn't really 25 complete cars and those were the rules. This led to the famous all hands on deck thrash to assemble at least 25 cars before the deadline. The initial 25 cars were not enough to meet customer demand, and in the end over 50 chassis were built, I don't know how many were actual completed cars but it was surely more than the 25 required to be a production model. In comparison there were 107 Ford GTs in 5 or 6 main variations produced from 1963 to 1968. (50 required at the time) Ferrari was the real cheater in this game of production numbers in that they famously made only 37 250 GTOs when 50 was the required number at the time.

@@randymorash7013 the FIA inspector was offered a test drive by Herr Piech, which he duly refused. It is said the FIA turned a blind eye to Ferrari’s 512s, which only had roughly half the 25, so that someone would bring the fight to the hated Boche

It showed everyone that fia didnt want ford to keep winning with their big block v8s. Instead of pushing competitors to build their own, which they couldnt or wouldnt, so ford was punished with regulations and bannings. Finally, how could fia have regular car manu Ford keep dominating top sports car racing over likes of iconic ferrari and porche... they need ford domination to end thru regulation and banning...

John Tempest GT40 was - Mk 2 was the big block built to win in 1966... the Mk IV wasn’t, and was a markedly distinct project. Following the changes to the reg’s which included production number stipulations, Ford didn’t bother... they had achieved what they set out to achieve. There was an exploratory venture into the new prototype regulations with the P68/P69, but it was never funded well enough to iron all the bugs out. Gulf Racing had been developing their own GT40-based prototype, and ultimately used what they learned to hone their GT40 program for 1968-9. But under the then-current rules under which the GT40 was eligible, 5 litres was the limit... and the 289 was the best-fitting shirt in the wardrobe.

Larry Cooper The GT40 was was obsolete? Ah......not hardly. Yes the Porsche was a tube frame car. Unfortunately it was a horrid handling car with atrocious reliability. Yes Ford was miles ahead of Porsche in experience at Le Mans and it showed. The GT40 would have continued to win if the FIA would not have outlawed it. It was way ahead of anything from Europe. The same GT40 won the race 2 years in a row. The FIA had enough of the GT40.

@@General-Gauder it was illegal in terms of having moving aerodynamics. Chaparral's pioneered advanced aerodynamics, such as a movable wing that would raised when the brake was pressed. F1 began using movable aero, most notably, tying it to the suspension. Problem was it was applying immense pressure on suspension parts, causing A-arms to collapse, and wings folding which would cause serious accidents. To stop this, rules were put in place that any aero parts are to be non movable.
Obviously the aerofoils moved via rods connected to the suspension. When it compressed (turning or high speed) the foils would flip up, and vice versa when suspension decompressed. This was clearly in violation of the rules, but to disqualify a much talked about car, and possibly make Porsche pack up, they begrudgingly allowed them this one time to use them.
