I and a partner published the book, "the Debut, The Making of a Filipino-American Film." Yes, it's very late-80s/early 90s Breakfast-clubby, and a bit dated by now. But I can tell you that the producers/directors and actors went through a hundred levels of hell to make this film happen; they struggled against a lot of odds to document Filipino American teen life at that point in time, and it wouldn't have happened without the commitment and passion of the directors and hundreds of community volunteers and supporters. And yeah, cha-cha was sort of inherited from parents and grandparents from the WWII and 60s-70s era, Filipino lodge and community dances, etc. I did it. ;-)
MaharlikaAWA not sure if you’re being sarcastic or not, but the Philippines is a melting pot of Asian and Spanish culture. I know there’s a difference between Spanish and Cuban, but my point is that there are things that we adopt that become just as Filipino as Lumpia. It’s all love.
@MaharlikaAWA it is Latin American. It is older, if you meant the origin or influnce like rumba, and other Lat Am dances, YES. But cha cha is not really cha cha until the 1950's. It still remains a fact that we Filipinos loved cha cha though it is not really the Spanish or the Cubans that made it famous here. It was the Americans. It started here as formal dance in posh gathering until it caught on like a fire and everybody in all walks of life is dancing to cha cha. They were basically refering to OUR LOVE FOR THE DANCE in the film. As during those times it is what reminds every Fil ams about their home country. As we Filipinos are social animals and cha cha provided a way to keep us more socialized back then
I love this movie. Growing up as a Filipino American this movie represented what I was going through growing up. This is the only movie that captured that. Hope there is more like this in the future.
We were at the premiere in SF for 'the Debut'. It was great to meet the stars and have the director come out and answer questions afterwards. This movie took some serious persistence and even stubborness to get made. Hollywood kept trying to dillute the story! Buy the DVD and watch the extras to get the whole story. Again, I said BUY the DVD. If you want to see more quality films like this one, you need to go out and support those people who are making them!
The reason I follow Dante Basco . I remember even tho I had my Filipino friends I could relate to how my mother and uncles were choosing what I was gonna be and telling everyone. But looking back I should’ve been more open to the medical field instead of graffiti, cars, and girls. Well lesson learned 😅
Ok, for anyone who has seen this movie and is Filipino or Filipino American, i was wondering if there are parts of this movie that make you want to cringe? I am a Fil-Am and there were parts of this movie that made me want to cringe and laugh in a weird way.
damn, a lot of memories with this film., im not even filipino either, lol..but when you're native american and grow up in the Bay Area in barrios with Mexicans and filipinos u learn a lot from them. a few things brought us together-food, family, and freestyle music! 😂 not to mention I went to SFSU and was a sucka for Filipinas I met there & at city nights. damn, life was once fun out here for us 80's babies before the tech invasion ruined the bay, but I digress..long live The Debut and my fellow brown brothers (and sisters)! 👍🏽✊🏾🎉
I remember watching this movie early 2000s. I luv it so much, i bought the soundtrack :) Its not on Netflix or Hulu but there are a few DVDs copies for sale on bay.
Everyone who wants to know the song that is playing in the beginning and ending of this trailor as well as at the end of the movie before the credits..... This is a Pop/Alternative song by a Fil-Am group that goes by the name of JULIE PLUG and the title of the song is DEVOTION.....
I just finished watching this and reading about how it became a cornerstone for Filipino American artist. .i think if they remade this or made something like it. It would be sick as hell since there is alot of new Filipino American talent. .it would be sick
I saw this movie after I had taken a college course in Filipino Studies. It was really good, and had a lot of key scenes having to do with race, family, and how to stay true to yourself. I especially love the scene where that one guy schools the others about Filipino history lol.
I never saw this film even though I'm filipino. I was born in California in the mid 80's and spent my entire life here. Unfortunately I never lived the filipino lifestyle, I became too americanized
OCSA represent! I love the vignettes in the DVD, too. There was one about joining a fraternity, and the interviewer asked this guy if he had to burn a live cigarette butt on his hand, he said "No! I'm not an ashtray!" (something like that).
yo this film is awesome, i never heard or seen any movie featuring second generation filipino americans, what a breakthrough.also this is the first to feature a whitewashed pinoy lol
in a way they tried to emphasize what it means to be filipino in different generations and why its important for parents to teach the new generations about their native customs because it shows disrespect to your elderly and your culture.
Know it’s been a long time since asked, but I just came across this question. I assume you mean the music in this trailer? The band is called Julie Plug. The song is called "Devoted” from their album, “Starmaker.” The song is from 1999 I think, but the band is still active in the SF bay area.
@tharbk01 uhm. yes he is. maybe you didn't see how many thumbs up my comment got. he played rufio in hook AND he voiced prince zuko in avatar: the last airbender.
All I can say is that when I was small and till today Filipinos have the best party's. If ur just passing by they invite u too the party and treat u like a king send u home with two plates every time man there the best. U come to the house take your shoes off and they say u come and eat. Try that shit at a white Mexican or black party and they be like don't be giving are food away but not Filipinos that's why this Mexican loves them especially the woman there beautiful
mrrayje24 one of the best memories i have of delivering pizzas is delivering a couple to a house that was having a party and the lady of the house (a very attractive woman btw) pulled me in and had me make a plate of some bomb ass food they were serving. It isnt just a fond memory of delivering pizzas, its a very cherished one of life.
Gui Rodriguez you said something about Filipinos having spanish last names...it's not that they were born with those last names. During spanish colonization, to discourage feelings of patriotism, the spaniards required the common people to change their last names, engraining their mark on the every day life of filipinos. Only those with royal blood (sultans and family) were allowed to keep their last names. So if you have a really old filipino last name that means once upon a time you could have been royalty. Therefore, it's not because most filipinos have spanish blood, they just had their names changed. For more of that, I encourage everyone to read "The History of the Filipino People".
@DonMiguel1810 Good for friends. I have Mexican friends that grew up in Sur 13 and now they're educated. I have Mexican and Spanish friends that have college degrees and don't care about Filipinos. They care for their community...Who are you and your friends to judge who Filipinos are?
@Majestic08 Sure, rape I guess, go with that. Anyways having 10% of that "rape blood" is prized by any Filiipino who usually makes up any story about being Spanish. btw, my friends are Mexican & Spanish, and they all think filipinos pretend to be things they are not.
@Majestic08 I never said anything about Spaniards killing anybody, I only refered to intermarriage. And I sure as HELL know what the Nazis did. Keep twisting, your good at it, but its not getting you anywhere. Pacquiao as your greatest achievement is SO sad.
@Majestic08 The Spaniards didn't touch your women, its a myth.... Theres such a miniscule amount in the filipos islands that it doesn't matter. And, come up with something better than killing Magellen.... thats the greatest thing a filipino has ever done or what?
@Majestic08 I don't know what "Sur 13" is. Who are all of you filipinos to tell everyone that you are "so related" to us, and have so much in common, always pretending and blowing things out of proportion. Thats the better question.
@DonMiguel1810 keep twisting...your good at it...eat your own words you hypocrite...Are you mad? Why does it matter? Why do you generalize your experiences with Filipinos to judge all the Filipinos? This started just because of a line in a movie about "cha-cha" what are you trying to prove in this argument?
ZUKO FIGHTING FOR HONOR. AGAIN.
Prince Zukooooo🤣

How dare Filipinos culturally appropriate Cuban dancing and claim it is in their blood! I'm offended!

You know, the way we Filipinos do the Cha Cha is different than the Latin way.
I remember watching this at a Filipino party. Didn't even notice he voiced Zuko.
Bruh, how can you not recognize that voice? lol
He wants his honor back!
Of course ❤
I love this movie. Growing up as a Filipino American this movie represented what I was going through growing up. This is the only movie that captured that. Hope there is more like this in the future.
haha when he said "happy birthday rose" it reminded me of him as American Dragon Jake Long ;D
You got it!
We were at the premiere in SF for 'the Debut'. It was great to meet the stars and have the director come out and answer questions afterwards.

As always 🙂, don't worry you are not the only one I know who had the regrets. Should have, would have .
you turned out fine, John.

Is Rufio Filipino?
yes
@klumzypinoy u know filipinos ;P
haha this is so like Zuko
But what about being an individual? I mean, I'm Filipino, but I don't want to conform to this "it's in your blood, you need to do it" mentality.
Gui Rodriguez you said something about Filipinos having spanish last names...it's not that they were born with those last names. It meant that a lot of Filipinos are fond of ballroom dancing especially the chacha. It's not about where the dance came from.
@Alyn08 You're school offers Filipino Studies? Cool. I wanna take that class but my school doesn't have it.
Tell me this isn't a WestSideStory type story/movie?
Lol. It's not like West Side Story. But it was fun trying to figure out what didn't make it look like it.
EDDIE GARCIA MY LODI!!!
i met him the day of MY debut at ala moana hotel !!!!!!!!! ;D

ruu fii oooooooooo
The Cha-cha is Latin **not** anything to do with Filipinos, who wrote that
@DonMiguel1810 Good for friends. I have Mexican friends that grew up in Sur 13 and now they're educated. I have Mexican and Spanish friends that have college degrees and don't care about Filipinos. They care for their community...Who are you and your friends to judge who Filipinos are?

Am I the only one who thinks the Thumbnail picture looks like Nigahiga/Ryan Higa?? xD
@rrrgovernment01 lol nobody dies.
Look, I'm sorry if I offended you but I posted that like 5 months ago I personally don't care anymore.
Ironic. Many claim to have spanish blood, yet not everyones legit. My great grandparents had green eyes n curly hair ;D
@Majestic08 Sure, rape I guess, go with that. Anyways having 10% of that "rape blood" is prized by any Filiipino who usually makes up any story about being Spanish. btw, my friends are Mexican & Spanish, and they all think filipinos pretend to be things they are not.
now his family doesn't even speak Tagalog 😭
He's the firelord Zuko

@Majestic08 The Spaniards didn't touch your women, its a myth.... Theres such a miniscule amount in the filipos islands that it doesn't matter. And, come up with something better than killing Magellen.... thats the greatest thing a filipino has ever done or what?
Well chances are if you're not Filipino or associated with Filipinos(or any ethnic people for that matter) you wouldn't understand it.
@Majestic08 I don't know what "Sur 13" is. Who are all of you filipinos to tell everyone that you are "so related" to us, and have so much in common, always pretending and blowing things out of proportion. Thats the better question.
