I'm so sorry I'm just seeing this comment for some reason. How did your butchering go?

Several generations ago (my grandmother and her family) they lived off the land, and farmed and raised their own food. Speaking for myself, I think I was so out of touch and spoiled and such a city girl. I never thought about where my food came from. 3 years ago, I started a garden, and growing some of our own food. I was inspired by Homesteaders that I watched on RUclips, 1000s of roots. I'm learning so much. I'm proud of your daughter for stepping up and helping with the quail. It was surprisingly not as gory as I imagined. I liked what you said to your son about the quail giving it's life up, and thanking it and thanking God for the provision. I've seen videos about how the creatures at food factories are treated and it's horrific. This is a better way.

      Aww thank you for sharing!!
Most kids and even adults are so disconnected they have no idea where their food comes from! I'm so proud of you! Glad Kip and Carrie helped you so much!
My nephew came to our house years ago.. he was 10 years old.... he saw my chickens and asked why did we have them. I told him for eggs and one day hope to have enough to eat... He laughed and said "Kaleigh, we don't eat chicken! ".... I replied, "You eat chicken all the time! ".. he laughed again like I'm the dumb kid lol.. "Kaleigh that's not REEEAL chicken! "...
I found that so strange that he thought he was eating fake chicken.. I understand when you don't see it die you don't have that image in your mind but still I was shocked he thought it was fake...
But that's what most kids probably do think. I've heard so many stories from farmers.. like one farmer.. they have a fall set up for kids to come for hay rides and petting zoo, corn mazes ect.. they had big bales of cotton out and 1 kid asked him.. "how many sheep to you have to kill to get all that cotton" 1 cotton doesn't come from sheep.. 2 you don't kill sheep for wool lol
Or one kid asking a gardener about planting seeds to grow spaghetti
I don't like the butchering but I know it happens every time we eat meat just we have peace of mind of not seeing it happen.. actually for me to be out there to film while it's happening This year is a big step for me.. normally it's really hard for me and I actually have a hard time eating that meat (even though I know it's the best way) but it shouldn't be that way and I'm trying to have my kids not feel that way like me and hopefully get better myself.. I'm improving.
We are so disconnected. This would have been a daily thing at one time not that far ago to eat each day and now it's so repulsive most wouldn't want to eat it after seeing the butchering. It shouldn't be this way.. if we are willing to eat it we should be willing to eat it when we know what happened.. speaking to myself

@@livingwithedenstreasures And honestly, from what I'm learning, we as a society need to consume less meat. Years ago, I read that John Robbins (the heir to the Baskin-Robbins fortune) denied his fortune because he felt that the meat and dairy council of America was pushing for overconsumption of these products. There are many people who consume meat for breakfast, lunch and dinner. He did studies and found that countries that rely on more of a plant based diet tend to have less health problems.
If you eat meat, it's definitely better to raise it and eat it without all of the GMO feed, antibiotics, and steroids. I have one daughter who never ate meat even as a child. She would flat out refuse to eat it. She is 26 now, and has no allergies, but my other children do. I always wonder if she'll be healthier in the long run.
The funny thing is that my mom used to always say that she pretended that the meat came out of the ground. I thought about that when you mentioned what your nephew said.
