I was a 14-year-old boy when I first heard this masterpiece. It was my introduction to the magical world of RUSH. Here in Brazil I simply started stalking them by buying their entire record collection. Today I'm a big fan and I even have Geddy Lee's autograph and I watched RUSH's show in 2002 at the Morumbi Stadium in São Paulo. RUSH is still great! 🇧🇷 🇧🇷 🇧🇷 🇧🇷
It's not the fans that don't like the album, it was the music press. I don't think the album was well recieved when it came out by fans either, but Rush were only around a year or two at that time and hadn't really made a name for themselves yet. They were playing very small venues when they weren't openign for KISS and other bands at this time. The sales were initially poor, and they even thought it might be the end of the band. In hindsight most fans consider it a great album.
My first listen to Rush was 2112, Blew my mind, and immediately bought Archives which has the 1st 3 albums. Loved this one back then, and still do! Never understood the haters
The Necromancer..."Three travellers from Willowdale...". Geddy and Alex were from Willowdale a neigbourhood in Toronto Canada. And so, Neil inserts the band into the storyline and part of the album's content. Brilliant!!!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this record, one of my top 5 Rush albums. Thanks for sharing your thoughtful observations and for putting together such a great channel.
Yes, this is Rush discovering/exploring/expanding their sound. Their cinematic approach to The Necromancer would continue to mature through the years, and hit its apex with Red Barchetta and The Camera Eye on ‘Moving Pictures’. They also smoked a bit of Nature’s Green while recording this one.
A masterpiece I've loved for decades. I think more folks have come around to it. Three young rockers stretching out and finding their way. In reality, their most important album, as ot set up the breakthrough of 2112, and off they went!
I absolutely love this album. The necromancer blew my mind when I was a kid, it has a couple of solid pop tunes in lakeside Park and Bastille Day, and while the fountain isn't their best epic, it had to walk so that 2112 could run
It's a jolly fine album Jim....First heard this in the late '70's as my sister had it....I ended up getting it as part of the first 3 album collection called Archives when I eventually got a part time job aged 16 in '79. I was hooked.... I can't understand why this album is derided, I have always think it's a cracker...
Hi Jim, lovin you here in Detroit. Yeah, this album tanked in sales, and when they had solo gigs at s bar or club when they weren’t supporting a bigger act, sometimes they only drew 20 or 30 people. Thus, this was called “The Down The Tubes” tour. On side 2, give a selective listen to the vocal on the No One At The Bridge, section of The Fountain of Lamneth. This is probably the best vocal that Dirk (Geddy) ever put down. Im my opinion, only 2112 vocals approaches this greatness. Unfortunately Geddy couldn’t put down the cigarettes, and his voice suffered as the years passed.
Good evening Jim, Listened to the whole album of Crippled black phoenix in one go this morning on my stereo set. It sounded great. I want that album. Know Rush but never heard this album. I started with the A show of hands album (1988). I tried the earlier albums but the earlier the album, the less I liked Geddie’s singing. The older Geddie sings a bit lower and less with a screaming sound in his voice. It’s great music.
While this is not recognized as one of their top albums, most fans love this including myself. A bad Rush Album (doesn’t exist), is far better than other bands best albums. Long time since I heard this. Thanks
This was my first contact with Rush, back when it was first released, and at first I didn't like it much. Then they put out 2112 and they've been one of my favourite bands ever since. When I revisited this album I loved it. It has a different feel to their other stuff. I love the way Lifeson uses the guitar to fill out the sound and build landscapes . Side 2 is a pastoral epic. You released this on May 17th deliberately, didn't you?
Beautiful album. Was my fave for a long while. Still near my top choices....along with Snakes and Arrows which is also often belittled despite each song being a cracker! Their discography is very extensive though so does cater for shifting tastes...👍
This is up there as one of my favorite RUSH albums. I absolutely love the psychedelic feel of this album. Necromancer is a top 5 song RUSH song for me. Context: Necromancer is a story of the trio traveling south (from Canada) and venturing into world of the music industry (necromancer)
Have you ever considered reviewing Smallcreeps Day by Mike Rutherford of Genesis - His first solo away from Genesis - great drumming by Simon Phillips and vocals by Noel MacCalla - one of those classics that slipped away. - just a thought x
Good video Jim. Love the little added extras on the editing. Really help to keep focus and hopefully you will see increased retention. Great album btw. Rush are just class
Perhaps not today but the album was NOT a commercial success so fans obviously did not buy the album. I personally LOVE this album but found it much after its release myself so I guess I contributed to its lack of success.
Use to run into Alex and Geddy on their walks always had time to chit chat, they'd laughed at my jokes but I never mentioned that we played Bastille Day. Rush were God's in Toronto but in the beginning Rush could sellout Chicago Stadium twice while in Toronto couldn't fill Maple Leaf Gardens, that changed quickly. Like the Sweet Jane ending
My second favourite Rush album after 2112. I like the early Rush stuff. My interest started to wain on Farewell To Kings, after Hemispheres I didn't listen to any Rush, So my interest was mostly the first 3 albums and plus All The World's a Stage live album.
The ultimate example of a band discovering themselves, and still trying to master it. The live version of "Bastille Day" on "All the World's a Stage" is classic. Like most, I only heard this album in its entirety AFTER discovering Rush with 2112 & "Stage" so, this album will always be a near miss for me. I wonder what my reaction would be hearing this release as it came out.
It's an experimental album in some ways with The Necromancer and The Fountain of Lamneth showing shades of things to come. Tragically the album bombed and the tour they undertook they named The Down the Tubes Tour as they honestly thought that was it for them. Fun Fact: By Tor reappears on Caress of Steel after his maiden outing on Fly By Night, but this time he's a good guy sent to save the world.
Hey Jim, I wanted to let you know that Ren also has an album called 'Freckled Angels'. I don't know if there's an actual album though. I'm guessing there isn't, and it's just available online to listen to, but if there is, it sure would be cool if you could get it and play it on your channel : )
Hey Jim! I don't know why it's derided, as I absolutely love Caress of Steel! I discovered Rush with 2112, then Hemispheres and then Caress of Steel. Those three sealed my fate as a lifelong Rush fan. It's so cool to see again the vinyl with the Mercury label, as my collection was sadly lost 20+ years ago.
funny clip in the Rush documentary had Geddy playing this album to the guys in KISS, Paul Stanley was perplexed and said "this isn't going to get you laid". lol.....
When I was a young Rush fan, (56 now), the test to determine if you were a “real” fan was if you liked Caress of Steel and The Necromancer in particular. Now people love it but back then not so much. For the record I’ve always loved it 😂
I’m not a huge fan of Rush, but I appreciate the history of the band. I think the main thing for me on this album is Neal Peart getting more confident in his lyric writing and story telling. By-Tor and the Snow Dog from Fly By Night followed by The Necromancer here hints at future storytelling with 2112 and Cygnus-X1 Books I & II.
Being an old git, i loved this when it came out. Imho it wipes the floor with their increasingly smooth, bland 80s and onwards stuff. I even like the Narrator’s voice! 🤣
Such a great album, it definitely went in a harder direction but is that such a bad thing? And I think Lakeside Park would have made a great single, it’s a very pop-themed song but with better musicianship than most. The label had nobody to blame but themselves for not releasing it. The outro guitar solo on The Necromancer is one of my favorite Alex moments. It’s such a joyous, triumphant sound, there’s nothing that comes close besides the solo in Blue Sky by the Allmans.
Jim.......This is my favorite Rush album. I say to any Rush fan that did not like this. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!!!!!!!! Wait until you hear side 2. AWESOME!!!
Just like I decided at a young age that I was a Zep guy and not a Stones guy.. I was a Yes guy, not a Rush guy until I got a couple of their CD's in the 80's. Still hardly call myself knowledgeable about their deep tracks.
Necromancer is God tier Rush! Caress didn't do well when it came out, but I don't think it's derided amongst Rush fans today. Its not a favourite of mine but still damn good. My least favourite Rush albums - Hold Your Fire and Roll the Bones. Ironically both of which sit next to some of my favourites (Power Windows and Counterparts).
I guess some people don't like it because it doesn't have Tom Sawyer or Limelight on it. I've heard some people say Going Bald is kind of silly. I happen to love this album. As for The Necromancer, that is my favorite Rush song not titled 2112. The narraration is perfect to me. Neil Peart, he wrote it, why shouldn't he recite it? It's like getting a book on tape read by the author. Side 2, The Fountain Of Lamneth, is actually 1 song. It is their first side long epic. And as they do with other epics, it's divided into parts, but they flow seamlessly. I'm with you, I can't see why some people don't love this album. It is one of my favorites by them.
I think what happened, Jim is the suits at the record label wanted them to start doing short, catchy, radio friendly songs or they were going to drop them. But they gave them one more chance to reign in all the weird stuff and concentrate on the hits. But that's not what Rush were all about, so for their next album they said "fuck it" and recorded _2112_ more or less to piss the record execs off and go out on their own terms. But guess what? _2112_ ended up being a huge hit and from that point onward the suits didn't interfere with anything they did. And the rest is history. _Caress of Steel_ was the boys getting their feet wet for what was to come.
It wasn't so much that people didn't like Caress of Steel, it was more a situation of everyone being "told not to like it". Mercury records were getting scared that Rush were going too progressive and experimental, so they didn't really get behind it. This happened ALL the time with record companies, whose job is to sell records, the artists should never have been pressured to make sure that millions of copies get turned overnight, simply because they don't crank out any 3 minute long charting sjngles. So the company pulls funding out of promotion and publicity and goes "See ? the record isn't selling!! We told you so, you guys better crank out some hits for us on the next one" So Rush smiled and nodded and then gave them 2112!!!! Hahaha ha!!
I think that Rush fans who deride this album are just not metal fans. This is less arty and progressive than what was to come but it's still gutsy, hard-edged metal of a type that was perhaps a little stale by 1975 (though very welcomed by the time NWoBHM came along - this fell in the gap) Though recognisably the same band, Rush's talents were perhaps better suited to the sounds on 2112, Moving Pictures and Clockwork Angels. I might put it on if I wanted to listen to a metal album but I'd put those others on if I wanted to listen to a Rush album.
AC/DCs first album was released in 1975, the same year as this album. Not much time there for it to be an influence. IMO it's more likely the other way around AC/DC was influenced by RUSH. In any event there's no comparison between the two bands. Fortunately classic rock has room for more bands, so nearly everybody's got something to suit their tastes.
We are some that going against the stream and actually like this album ! I don't get it... it's a really good album. It is together with 2112 my 2 favourite albums with Rush.
I wouldn't say I deride this album. It's good, it just doesn't compare to everything else Rush did, especially the next several albums. You can say it was the band finding themselves and it certainly feels that way, but it amazes me this is their third and not second album. "Fly By Night" feels simultaneously more fresh and more mature. For me, the only great song on here is Bastille Day. Side Two has some fantastic moments, but altogether it's sloppy and ill-produced. I understand why hardcore fans raise this up as underappreciated, but to say this is one of their best is to deride the rest of their superb catalogue.
Caress of Steel is a very good Album. From Beginning to the end. Don't care what the stupid Critics have written. The most of them never had anyway not much idea of music. 😒
Your write this is in their top 10 albums. That was great reaction and alot of people don't know that, cheers to u, BUT TRUMP SUCKS DON'T VOTE FOR A WANT TO BE DICTATOR YOU WILL REGRET IT, YOU WILL REGRET IT.
Where did you get the indication that this was disliked. Most Rush fans own and play it. It may not be on rotation like Hemispheres or Moving Pictures but WHAT IS?
It's great to hear this again Jim. I had almost forgotten how good it is! As usual with Rush, the critics got it wrong, and the fans got it right.
I love this record actually. The purity and clarity of each instrument is apparent. You can tell it’s a precursor to 2112! The Necromancer, Epic!!
I love RUSH!!! And Caress Of Steel is awesome!!!
🔈🔉🔊😎
The first record by Rush I ever heard. I immediately loved it on first spin - screw the critics :)
Last part of Necromancer had me singing "Sweet Jane" Anyone else? Love this album!
I was a 14-year-old boy when I first heard this masterpiece. It was my introduction to the magical world of RUSH. Pure magic one of the best ❤❤ albums a story to be told from start to finish
Great album
A hard rocking Rush with a fantastic young Geddy Lee vocal…
Great comment, “Rush discovering their sound” Exactly!! I love this record.
The Necromancer..."Three travellers from Willowdale...". Geddy and Alex were from Willowdale a neigbourhood in Toronto Canada. And so, Neil inserts the band into the storyline and part of the album's content. Brilliant!!!

I for one have always loved this album. And it still holds up well for me. Necromancer was life changing first listen.

The idea that this album is derided is just a meme started by mainstream music press. Fans still love it. It's one of my personal favorites, in fact.
Love Alex guitar work on this album
This was my introduction to Rush and I LOVE IT.
By far my favorite album from them with the Fountain being my fav tune

The weekend starts! Thanks for this'un!
