  • Introducing the Sanderson Steam Cycle! Named "Jenny", this home built coal fired steam cycle was painstakingly crafted over the last 4 years to look like it could have been built in the 1920's.
A traditional coal fired steam engine on 2 wheels! You've seen nothing like this before.

Wow! Absolutely amazing!!! I'm retiring tomorrow from my job as a coal fired power plant boiler operator for 37 years generating electricity. If I may offer some friendly advice,,..You need to run the cleanest water in your boiler. This will cut way down on the scaling of your boiler tubes. If you have an under sink reverse osmosis unit, that water is the best! Also, flashing down your boiler is fine but I think you should wait until temperature and pressure drop down. This will minimize stress caused by differential cooling of the components on the boiler and whole machine. You may also think about "Inerting" your boiler when it wont be fired up for awhile. This consists of using nitrogen gas or c02 to push all the air out of your boiler. This will cut way down on corrosion! Rust has to have oxygen. Close all of your drains and open your uppermost vent on your boiler. Remove your boiler water fill cap and drop a pound or so of dry ice in and put the fill cap back on. If the cap is vented you will have to seal it up somehow. Remember c02 is heavier than air and flows like water. The dry ice will off gas and c02 will begin to fill the low spots and It will push all the air out of your uppermost vent on the boiler. Cheers from the Petrified Forrest in Holbrook Az. U.S.A. Contact me anytime brother! DDDave

The Narrator: "So, what inspired you to build this?"
This guy: "Well, I looked at a regular motorcycle and thought to myself 'How can I make this less practical and more dangerous?'"

I'm pretty sure that in the US operating that thing would require a boiler operator's license. Also, the boiler would have to be built to pressure vessel code standards. Those standards came about through many destructive and deadly explosions over the decades. Hope he's got enough safety factor built into his boiler so he doesn't end up like the steam engineer of the "old 97."

That's the thing. I'm sure he has no idea how close to failure he is. @3:00 it showed red line at 125psi. For just a 10 inch diameter boiler that's almost 2 TONS of tensile force!

    “I’m not an engineer”
Well, it hasn’t exploded so, that’s sounds like some good engineering to me

I saw a lady riding a steam bike at Driffield show a couple of years ago it was a lot smaller in the whirring bits, painted brown, might have been a Haleson.
