1. John Buford is the unsung hero of Gettysburg. Movie dramatics aside, he set the table for the battle by holding up Heth's Division. 2. Harry Heth wasn't quite the idiot he is portrayed at here. He was a very good brigade commander, but was promoted to the level of his incompetence. This tends to happen when an army has a limited officer pool. And as the ranks get higher and the commands get larger, that pool dries up VERY quickly. 3. This movie doesn't do that great a job of showing it, but the Federal Army would miss Gen. John Reynolds VERY much in the coming year-and-a-half. He was a skilled and intelligent man with initiative and might very well have replaced Meade as AotP commander later on.
agreed, honestly as skilled and trusted* (a very important thing for union commanders at this time) by his men as Reynolds was, I think the union holds longer on the first day if not for that sniper. Probably long enough that there isn't the missed opportunity by the ConFeds to seize little round on the first day.
To me this is one of the best films ever the acting especially tom berenger but really the whole cast are superb and although I'm Scottish the history of it is so interesting and of course tragic
Sorry Gen Lee, it is not the entire Federal army, at that moment just the 1st Corp. And Howard is coming up fast because Reynolds requested his help. You can thank Gen John Buford for starting the greatest American battle and preserving the Union.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: John Buford ought to be regarded as one of the greatest cavalry commanders ever produced by the US Army. JB Stuart and Custer had significant flaws that Buford never displayed... like forgetting their missions and letting their egos dictate their operations. But Buford and Sheridan were humbler men and more interested in doing their duty than getting their name in the papers. And like John Reynolds, the Federal Army would miss John Buford a great deal later in the war when they needed that kind of leadership.
Too bad this clip is not from the Director’s cut version. There is is a portion of this scene that focuses on Reynolds’s decision to stand and fight with the Federal 1st and 11th corps. Buford is a true hero but so is Reynolds
Sir, I commend you for promoting Mr. Sam Elliott's elegant mustache to the rank of brigadier general...it (the mustache) will command General Hancock's left flank.
Lee was very much a gentleman. Heth knew he was getting a chewing out when lee mentioned orders. But lee was also not a man to dwell on failure, either. As a rule he preferred officers who were aggressive.
Longstreet was probably one of the few confederate generals who understood the full nature of the war they were in. He kept opting for the army to fight defensively in dug in positions and force the Federals to attack them, thus negating their numerical superiority. Lee finally adopted that strategy far too late in the war, after he had already wasted over a hundred thousand men in old style Napoleon open field fighting.
@@hisdudeness8328Longstreet was short sighted. Lee came north because he and Davis knew thar Vicksburg was about to fall, cutting the south in half. If the south was to have any hope, they needed a victory on northern soil to offset Vicksburg and weaken the unions morale while impressing foreign governments. Lee also knew Meade, and knew that Meade would not be so easy to trick as hooker. If Lee had pulled back after the first day, Meade would have claimed a victory,
Lee knew the score, win right then, or lose. He made the right call. It just wasn't in the cards. If we are being honest, a win at Gettysburg wasn't a slam dunk win the war moment, but might have led to a War of 1812 eating at the Whitehouse moment.
I took an outstanding Civil War history class at Florida State ... Seems I remember Professor Jim Jones saying that the gunfire was so thick at Gettysburg that musket balls were hitting each other head on. What a miserable waste of lives. Some 650,000 men lost their lives due to battle, hunger and disease. But what man meant for evil, God meant for good; and probably thousands of slaves got to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ and came to a saving knowledge of GRACE that they would not have heard, had they stayed in Africa. And time is running out. Choose LIFE. Choose Jesus. NOW. While you still can. The prince of evil is coming ...

Correction Heth's Division not Corp.
@@StevieGPT Thank you. I'll fix that.

"Well sir, _they wouldn't leave!"_
The iron brigade wouldn’t either….
He is used to a cavalry unit not holding
Yeah, they got the boy's dander up!
You’re on their turf, why would they?
Genuine frustration, there, in real life, and excellent acting. Heth knew he screwed up.

I’m pretty sure his men armed with breechloader rifles vs confederates with manually loaded rifle muskets were a big help.
Take it easy on Lee it's just the stress talking
last 19th century war and first 20th century war...started with napelonic tactics and ended in trench warfare
"Thank god!"
"Can you hold?"
"I reckon I can"
"Ok, good then, we'll deploy elsewhere!"
@4:45. Lee was no Stonewall Jackon. It's no surprise the Confederacy collapsed when he died.
Are you serious!? Lee was simply the best General on either side.

No Iron Brigade, no USA as we know it.

The generals certainly were easy targets up on the horses.

God's Will. LOL!!!! That aged like milk.
They fought there to keep the airport secure.
If Lee only would had to Listen instead of smelling the blood in the water.

Lousy beard - Longstreet
“God’s Will.”
.. did Sam Elliot do anything but ye haw im a cowboy roles other then Blade?
Yep, he played Wade Garret, the best cooler in the business in Roadhouse.
Sam Elliot wasn't in Blade.
Cher's boyfriend in Mask
He wasn't in Blade. You're confusing him with Kris Kristofferson.

I thought this was a parody it's so stilted.
27 surviving original photos of the battle and most of those are of the aftermath.....I'm calling fake history on this battle.
Well it's a good thing no one cares what you think
Sheen is just plain awful. Horrible casting.
