When I was seven, I went to aftercare one day and found a dying bat. It was laying at the bottom of the slide, wings splayed out, just panting. I told other kids, and we all crowded around it, and it never responded. Most of the other kids felt creeped out by it, but I just felt… sad. I’ve had a deep love and sympathy for bats ever since that day.
Educate yourself about rabies. Can’t believe you let kids go near a fucking dying bat. 🤦🏻♂️
No joke, there's a good chance it had rabies. Bats are notorious for being carriers of rabies, and panting is IIRC one of the symptoms. It is sad; rabies is a terrible disease with no cure. Feeling creeped out is also a normal response, it's part of our natural aversions to things that could potentially carry diseases.
Edit to add: A healthy bat probably would have creeped them out a lot less. It's specifically animals (or people) behaving in a clearly abnormal way that triggers a revulsion response, and a big one is being totally unresponsive to the presence of humans. It's an indication that there is something _not right_ with that animal.
I had an encounter with a feral kitten once that did not respond to my presence at all. At first, I was just happy to be able to pet it, but it quickly became clear something was wrong with it. It was having trouble standing up and couldn't walk without falling over. I had to get a rabies shot after it bit me, but it tested negative for rabies so I didn't need any more shots. They think it may have ingested some anti-freeze or something similar. Sadly, it had to be put down.
Love the way the bat grabs them to get more pets and kisses. ❤️

There are people who care for bats that are used for teaching, and can no longer live wild. They literally hold the bats too old to fly on their own, and walk fast or run, to give the bats some sensation of flight they can no longer enjoy otherwise.
I’ve always loved fruit bats, they’re gorgeous and there are a lot in Australia. However, almost all are long-term disease carriers; Lyssavirus, Nipah virus, Ebola, Marburg virus, rabies. All wildlife sanctuaries and zoos I’ve been to that have bats never allow people to touch them and always warn to never touch any bats because of the enormous risk bats specifically carry.
They are capable of carrying those diseases, so hence the precaution for not touching them. But the prevalence of those diseases in the bat populations themselves is quite rare - e.g. ABLV (Lyssavirus) is the virus of concern in Australia, which has an estimated prevalence of less than 1% in flying-fox populations. The other viruses you mentioned have not been detected in Australian bats to my knowledge.

They are such amazing animals, really cute and for the most part very sweet. Its tragic that they are prone to carrying and passing in diseases.
Just wanted to add this for people that don't know this already: If you find an injured flying fox or bat NEVER touch them! Only call animal services!
