  • You thought that bats were dangerous killer animals. Well, not this one at least. This is a gigantic fruit bat that we met up in the mountains of Bali Indonesia. This Indonesian guy has this bat as a pet that he rescued as a baby and has kept it with him for many years.

    When I was seven, I went to aftercare one day and found a dying bat. It was laying at the bottom of the slide, wings splayed out, just panting. I told other kids, and we all crowded around it, and it never responded. Most of the other kids felt creeped out by it, but I just felt… sad. I’ve had a deep love and sympathy for bats ever since that day.

    • @Civirk
      @Civirk 6 месяцев назад

      Educate yourself about rabies. Can’t believe you let kids go near a fucking dying bat. 🤦🏻‍♂️

    • @Greywander87
      @Greywander87 5 месяцев назад +1

      No joke, there's a good chance it had rabies. Bats are notorious for being carriers of rabies, and panting is IIRC one of the symptoms. It is sad; rabies is a terrible disease with no cure. Feeling creeped out is also a normal response, it's part of our natural aversions to things that could potentially carry diseases.
      Edit to add: A healthy bat probably would have creeped them out a lot less. It's specifically animals (or people) behaving in a clearly abnormal way that triggers a revulsion response, and a big one is being totally unresponsive to the presence of humans. It's an indication that there is something _not right_ with that animal.
      I had an encounter with a feral kitten once that did not respond to my presence at all. At first, I was just happy to be able to pet it, but it quickly became clear something was wrong with it. It was having trouble standing up and couldn't walk without falling over. I had to get a rabies shot after it bit me, but it tested negative for rabies so I didn't need any more shots. They think it may have ingested some anti-freeze or something similar. Sadly, it had to be put down.

    I’ve always loved fruit bats, they’re gorgeous and there are a lot in Australia. However, almost all are long-term disease carriers; Lyssavirus, Nipah virus, Ebola, Marburg virus, rabies. All wildlife sanctuaries and zoos I’ve been to that have bats never allow people to touch them and always warn to never touch any bats because of the enormous risk bats specifically carry.

    • @aussiedragon288
      @aussiedragon288 Год назад +21

      They are capable of carrying those diseases, so hence the precaution for not touching them. But the prevalence of those diseases in the bat populations themselves is quite rare - e.g. ABLV (Lyssavirus) is the virus of concern in Australia, which has an estimated prevalence of less than 1% in flying-fox populations. The other viruses you mentioned have not been detected in Australian bats to my knowledge.

    They really are adorable, sweet animals for the most part. It's so disheartening that there are many who carry serious diseases. If they didn't, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw more people keeping them as pets.
    Obviously, you can get bats that are not disease carriers. But at least in the wild, there is always that risk.
    They are such amazing animals, really cute and for the most part very sweet. Its tragic that they are prone to carrying and passing in diseases.

      Just wanted to add this for people that don't know this already: If you find an injured flying fox or bat NEVER touch them! Only call animal services! Not only because of serious risk of infection (rabies!) but also because if they scratch or bite you, animal rescue services in many countries are obligated to kill the animal!

      @@JS-hx1cubut it would be me who gets infected and sick no? Not the bat. So why the warning?

    • @JS-hx1cu
      @JS-hx1cu Год назад +19

      @@AutoRauto I am warning about two things when handling wild bats and megabats:
      1. You could contract serious infections. Bats are one the primary rabies vectors. You don't want that.
      2. You could get the bat killed. For example @Megabattie, an australian animal rescuer and carer for flying foxes often warns about touching bats, because they might bite or scratch you and then the rescuer is required by law to euthanize / kill the poor animal.

      @@JS-hx1cuisn't there some way to vaccinate wild bats? Like create a non-lethal trap. And vaccinate them and then set them back into the wild. If you do that long enough they wouldn't carry rabies anymore.

      It's a type of bat nicknamed "Flying fox" or "Fruit bat". They're completely harmless (except for possible rabies infection)
      Unlike the ugly pug looking ones, this one can grow to be over 3/4ths the height of a human and is herbivorous (although it can consume small insects)

    Bats' teeth are so tiny that you can receive a micro bite and not even notice, and you can contract rabies from them. I get that this one is domestic, but please don't repeat such unnecessary actions at least with wild bats, if they need your help wear some type of fabric or clothes for protection, so many people died from contact with wild bats.
