Deep River Blues dates to 1924 and was written by Eddie Green and Lucile Marie Handy, the daughter of W.C. Handy-the self-styled Father of the Blues. Doc Watson's recording of “Deep River Blues” is based on The Delmore Brothers' recording in 1933 called “I've Got Them Big River Blues.” In the songbook, "The Songs of Doc Watson" (1971, Oak Publications), Doc confirms this, writing that “This blues was introduced to me in the late thirties by a Delmore Brothers recording..."
