Growing Lemon Cucumber - Excellent Producer!

- Lemon cucumbers are heirloom variety of cucumbers. They are round in shape and yellow in color. It is believed to have been introduced to the USA in the late 1800s. Lemon cucumber does not have a lemon taste at all, it only looks like one. It has a flavor little milder than a regular cucumber.
One benefit of this cucumber is that you can eat it all at one sitting with no halves left to store in the fridge. We found the plants to be prolific and is a good choice for cooler climates. It is also less apt to develop bitterness.
This is the cucumber often seen in ethnic Indian markets (budamkaya). To save space, give the vigorous plants a fence to climb. You can easily grow this plant in a pot with a 5 to 6 foot trellis
When we moved to Mississippi 43 years ago because of work I bought a piece of property. These things were all over the place growing wild here for years. Love them.

I found your video very relaxing, the music, your voice and the greenery and very informative, thanks!
+Sunee L Thank you! Nice to know you liked the video, music and my voice :) Happy Gardening!
I grew these this year and they were great. He was exactly right, pick them early and avoid the seeds. I had the same issues with fungus but it all worked out.
I am in southern Az. Its in the 90’s now. We just planted 2 new plants of the lemon cucumbers. They are growing pretty good so far.
Yuma!?
Thank you for sharing , now I’m not worrying to plant this lemon cucumber , I’ll try to plant to soil the seeds I bought today
I am going to try this lemon cucumber. I will wait until the trains are done here in Florida because of the fungus problem. Thank you California Gardening.
+our florida garden Thanks! Nice to know you will be trying this variety. Its a nice producer!
How far now?
This will be my first year growing lemon cucumbers thanks to your videos. I've subscribed. I can't wait to see how ine turn out. Great video, thank you x🍋🍋🍋🍋🍊🍏🍎
milk and water, spray on leaves during hot part of the day. do it a couple times i had 100 complete success with that with the infected leaves.
Hi! What would you advice the measurement of milk to water ? And how often in a day to spray please ? Thanks 🙏
Damn bro you are quite good at growing food. love your vids. always look forwards to them
Keep up the good work bro!
+John Smith Thank you for the feedback, much appreciated!
I’m growing these for my second year now... Last year two of my three plants died from bacterial wilt very early in the season, the third succumbing to mosaic about a month later. Hoping I can keep them going longer this summer!
I accidentally bought a lemon cucumber plant this year . Thanks for the video i didnt know anything about them . The are delicious .
I'm growing this for the first time and think it's pretty cool but it's definitely fared worse disease-wise than my marketmores did. I was going to pull it out but saw lots of cucumbers so just pruned it and left it be. Watching this, I'm glad I did. The ones I planted in a better location, on the poles of my greenhouse (plastic is off now) appear to be doing much better than those planted on a tomato cage, too close together.
they're honestly pretty dang great.... 1 plant will produce dozens and they're excellent snack-size
Found them growing wild in south florida near a canal bank they were great
I've just bout seeds for these to grow next year here in UK. Can't wait. I'm not a lover of cucumber but I like to make pickles so I will probably harvest at earlier stage for this, thank you for your very detailed and progressive vids. I love the way we see the growing from beginning to end.
+Marina Wilson Thank you, nice to know you like the videos and the beginning to end growing stages. Keep growing!!
How was your experience? I am about to start. I love your RUclips profile as well🌻
I love your videos. You are a great teacher. I'm growing lemon cucumbers for the first time this year. I hope I like them. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the information! Excited to give it a try this spring!
thank you for your video. It answer quite a few questions I had for the lemon cucumber plant. Good luck on your garden this year.
Still waiting for mine to produce! Can’t wait to try them!
What a grower , I just started some seeds! Maybe I'll try to pickle them since the plant bares so many fruits!!
Did pickling go well?
Do you do Tik Toks?
Thank you so much for sharing you knowledge! ❤ I'm moving mine from the greenhouse to the garden today.
Thank you for your video. Mine are at the flowering stage right now. Can’t wait to see if it produces beautiful lemon cucumbers like yours.
Excellent video! I came in search of the lemon cucumber specifically, but I subscribed and am excited to check out your other videos!
I’m growing in my apartment;doing well so far.
I'm currently growing one of these. I'm proud of it because it sprouted, and it looks really healthy.
It's my first time trying to do this, wish me luck.
So how did it go? I can't grow anything because I live in an apartment :c
I want to try today. What's your experience?
This was really helpful!! Thanks! I'm growing them in big pots with 3 foot tomato cages for trellises, But after watching your video realize maybe I need to do something taller for them.
Lol looks like lemon and that's it, no other resemblance..lol loved it
We pickled our lemon cucumbers ruclips.net/video/SqUqQeUlAXw/видео.html
Thank you so much! This was very helpful. I have some more harvesting to do tomorrow.
I am growing these and will make cucumber salad from them with my Texas Sweet Onions
I am tempted to add this to my list ! Thank you for another wonderful video:)
+Mumbai Balcony Gardener | Avid Life Observer Thank you!
You gave quite a bit of information regarding this plant. Thanks so much. I have tasted these before and it was a mellow cucumber taste and the flesh was a firm texture. I am going to grow some of these and would like to possibly fix some type of relish with them. Thanks for your time and effort to share your knowledge and experience with us. Jesus bless.
Very helpful video, you anticipated all my questions well.
Hundreds of flowers but no fruit yet. Plenty of bees here.
Very interesting review. Helpful advice to harvest them younger for better crispness. Thanks!
I bought some this year. Hope I get a crop like yours... Thanks.
the 1080p looks beautiful man, great video! looks very tasty
+michael ranasinghe Thanks for the feedback on the video quality, much appreciated!
I see that they grow well in containers. I’m gonna try that!
Nice video
Thanks for the info! Just wonderfing if this variety is easy to hand-pollinate, in the absence of insects (on a balcony)?
Yes,I growing them here in Portland,Oregon. Oh man! Do they produce! But how? Not really the bees. I did not hand pollinate. Littery sow bugs, flys ect. And do they spread! They like growing across rather than up. I started them growing upward, but as soon as I released them to grow out they went wild down the garden box. it's the most productive plant next to zucchini ,Oregon suger pod 2,& yellow wax beans here. as far as I see...I have a large garden ( my first year!) And let me tell you they don't disappoint. I'm juicing them today!
So producer wise: great, bugs did the job, they look like you toiled over them & they are great to drink...enjoy!
wow, this is the first time I've heard about lemon cucumber!I didn't know it exist. I want to plant this too.. I'm always inspired to grow fruits and vegetables because of your videos!
does lemon cucumber grows in a tropical country? I'm from Philippines and I want to try it.
+Jessica Asuncion Thanks, yes lemon cucumber should grow well there in Philippines in summers!
Update po?
I just find you! happy for it
This is a crystal apple cucumber. This is the only instance I've encountered where it is identified as Lemon.
Thank you for taking the time to make this. When you pick the yellow ones, do you pickle them or how do you eat them?
This is Larry's answer to the Cherry Tomato by Bob
Thank you
Just bought 3 four inch 2 plants each my 1st x growing these so thanks for the info I give u 5 ❇❇❇❇❇
I just bought seedlings of this and I can't wait to see how they grow and bear fruits. Thanks for sharing.
Interesting variety. Thank you for showing us detailed review of this variety :)
+Fruits For Life Thanks mate! Nice to know you liked it!!
i tried this cucumber in my garden this summer past, very delicious and very prolific. I could not keep up with them, I share some in my neighborhood and at work too. only thing i saw as a downside to this was once picked they only last for a few day before they start to go soft.
+Sherece Prince Nice to know you liked this variety!
I have heard they make wonderful pickles!
Thank You 😊.👍🏾
i prefer these over the bigger green ones. they are just the right size
I will be growing my first crop of lemon cucumber this year. Yes, I love to eat them raw. How do you eat your cucumber? Do you have recipes to share? 🥰 Thank you for sharing
Do you treat this variety like a regular Cucumber plant, like removing the suckers as it grows, & do you remove the male flowers, or use them to pollinate the female fruit. Thank you.
I dont prune my cucumber but yes you can hand pollinate them for more fruit production
My favorite!
It's your soil that is causing that blight/mold. It could be too much fertilizer or too much vermiculite ect. Nice video. Though I was wondering; can you still use the seeds from one of the fruits 1 plant made, so you can plant more, because the other two died?
Thanks alot for this experiment
Loved this video. Thought about what kind of varieties of cucumber to grow since my daughter loves them, next thing I know, you have a video! Great timing.
I was also wondering, if possible, could you please do a video on your current watering system (how it's set up and what it looks like) I've only seen your video on how to convert an old sprinkler system, but I'm looking for more information. I'm really new to vegetable gardening so I'm a little confused on this process. Anyway, thanks so much for all your wonderful and informative videos!
+FadeXscape1 Nice to know your daughter loves cucumbers. My son has two favorites in our garden - carrots and cucumbers! Isn't it such a joy when kids pick and eat the veggies they like...right there in the garden! Keep growing!!
+FadeXscape1 I will try to do a more detailed videos on the sprinkler systems
Nice!
Great video Thanks
+Nicole Moore Thank you, nice to know you liked it!
Thanks for the video. I am going to try it for the fall. Now to find seeds...
+dskillzhtown Nice to know you are planning to grow this. Good luck!
I am growing this variety this year, in our “Pacific Northwest” garden, and I look forward to tasting their sweet fruit. I don’t like bitter cukes.
Thanks for share! Could you please advice if the plant can be grow up continuous for x years or only one year? Thanks a lot!
These are usually grown as annuals, so every year
Hi, I am growing these now in a container. I'm excited. How often did you water? I live in a similar climate. Thanks in advance!
First time have seen this
Can anyone give me a recipe for pickling these lemon cucumbers
I bought a couple lemon cucumber plants. All i have are flowers. Everyone is talking about pollinating my flowers but I can’t tell which are female??
Female flowers will have an immature fruit below them
yes! i will thanks.
+Orange Lee Great! Keep growing!!
Ok these are the craziest - you have massive flower too and not many fruit ??
Me too. I planted around May 17. The leaves has brown spots. Saw a earwig. Lots of flowers & leaves but no fruits. Not sure what fertilizer I need
Do you kno why cucumbers turn out bitter sometimes?
Do they grow up the trellis on their own?
Yes they do, but a little help from you is better
I watched ur video of Taro root growing. I loved it. It looks easy to grow. Can I grow it in grow bags. Taro root is my favourite vegetable n I always purchase these. I am going to try growing it :-)
+Padmaja Mohan Yes absolutely, it should grow great in grow bags. I am working on some grow bag experiments and hope to have it out soon. Taro is one of my favorites too!!
How well do you think they could grow in Oahu, Hawaii?
It's summer all year 😂
My lemon cucumber plants ( 2 ) I only see one cucumber growing. Am I doing something wrong
Thanks for the video, going to try it out. Does it self pollinate?
+GerryStilton Yes this is a self-pollinating variety but still has different male and female flowers.
How do you take the spines off?
wow! it looks great. I want to try growing it. Can I get this variety seeds in India. weather is fine here.
+Padmaja Mohan You should try it. Good luck!
Is this "dosa Kaya" from the South of India?
Great video, thank you. I have ordered my seeds for the Lemon Cucumber. I hope it does well in Ireland. Do you think I should grow this in my greenhouse or outside? Thank you
These should grow well either in or outside the greenhouse, my sister grows them both places, and our climate is similar to Ireland or the UK.
My seeds must have been mixed up because I never purchased these yet they are growing
It looks like you have 4 plants in the container, is that right? How large is the container you are using? Thank you for such an informative video! :)
Yes, the container is about 16 inches wide and tall. Around 8 gallons of soil.
wow i like to try that.
+Orange Lee You should try it. Happy Gardening!!
yes! i will. thanks.
Has anyone pickled these before? Maybe good maybe not but still curious
Can you save their seeds? How would you recommend saving them?
Yes you can, I will try posting a video on the technique
+California Gardening (Organic, Easy Garden Tips) That would be amazing. Thanks.
How do you cook them?
I’ve only eaten cucumber raw, how do you cook them?
You can cook them with lentils (mung bean) and spices like turmeric and salt. You can also add everything and pressure cook them
I think they were referring to ripe vs unripe (unripe being “raw”)
you grow so many things do you have lots of space indoor as well as outside?
+petra hendrikse Only outside :) I live in an urban area so very constrained for space. But its all relative. I have fruit trees, some containers and raised beds so I am thankful to God for that!
It is amazing what you are growing I guess your climate is much better than here in London
+petra hendrikse Yes, we do have great weather here in Southern California and can grow plants round the year!
Do you have any fruit trees? I'm trying to grow more fruit trees Wright now I'm trying to sprout soursoup trees, jackfruit and coconuts not much luck with coconuts.
+maricruz jaimes Yes I do grow a lot of fruit trees, will try to do a fruit tree tour of my garden soon!
+maricruz jaimes I just posted a December tour of my garden :) It includes some fruits I am growing. Let me know your thoughts! I will try to do one on only fruits as well!
really like your videos. why doesn't my lemon cucumber plant have any fruit on it?
Maybe it's a little too early..?
Or it's just not the right season..idk....
Did you grow it inside or in a place with low bug/ bee count like a balcony or screened porch? If the flowers die and rot off it is because no pollen got from the male flower to the female. You can hand pollinate if this is the case.
@MsSMR91 how do I hand pollinate?
So weird because my lemon cucumber was super heat tolerant and very disease tolerant aswell
This is a first. First time I'm not too crazy about one of your videos. 😏
+wonderlucha Why is that? You don't like cukes or just didn't like this variety? LOL
I re-watched it and I changed my mind. Sorry Charlie...I was just not too happy about the yellowing leaves, that's all.
+wonderlucha Oh OK! Yes this variety seems susceptible to fungal diseases. But other than the yellowing leaves, this plant is a great producer!
What super market can you find lemon cucumbers if anyone knows please tell me
Portable Plant Probably no super market, that's why we should grow them.
I got mine from Home Depot
I could never get my lemon cucumber to grow they would sprout and die
+LCJ farms Oh I see, maybe you should try it again some time next season!
I swear I have tried growing this for the past 4 years with no luck. Last summer was the first year I ended up with tons of flower but now fruit. The striped beetles keep killing it off. I grow a ton of other things in my garden with no issues but cumber have never worked for me 😭😭😭
Try spraying with neem oil (amzn.to/1PXeLAR) if you have pest problems. As a bonus, it also prevents fungal diseases. Good luck!
Neem is the bomb-works great. I grew this last year but only got two fruits because the bees were not abundant. I forgot about them and didn't harvest them until they were the size of small canteloupe. I figured they'd be awful, but thought I'd try them anyway.
Raw-just nothing, no taste at all. They looked like a squash inside, with large seeds. I was roasting squash anyway, so I seasoned them a bit and threw them on with the rest, thinking I'd probably throw them out.
To my surprise they had the best flavor of any of the squash I roasted-butternut, spaghetti, etc. It was very mild and I couldn't really describe it, it was different than any I've ever tasted. Kind of sweet, smooth and creamy, very delicate. The taste fades quickly, but it's so good you want to keep eating. I plan to grow this again but I will grow it in cooler weather, as we can grow through the winter here. Will try it small as a cuke this time, since I didn't get to last time.
Thanks for another enjoyable vid!
I'm growing mine indoors so bugs can't get to it.
@@Starrlet how did it go?
Looks like korean melon
