Stop Playing Synthesizer Cliches!

- Since I have... :::ahem::: strong (if objective) views on a variety of topics relating to synthesizers, I decided to make a series about it. This episode was a bit of an experiment, and I suppose serves as the first effort.
This is featuring the AMAZING Christine Anderson of WakeUpDreamland, as well as the Mellotron Micro I have extensively demonstrated on my Patreon account.
Don't worry, I can't even play "Jump" properly
I’m not sure that I can, either! :D
If you ever do, you will be featured on your own show.
Then you better buy an Oberheim OB-xA. If internet advertising has taught me anything…
We finally have our "No Stairway to Heaven."
On the other hand, playing cliche songs on unexpected instruments hits a bit different. I occasionally DO play Stairway in music stores, but on piano. If anyone bothers to say anything, it's that they're surprised to hear it that way.
Just to spite you I’m going to buy a DX7 just to play the Taco Bell gong.
I want a CS-80 so badly so I can finally play "Wonderful Christmas Time" :-)
Yessss
😂🤣
Does anyone else get completely naked before they play the Hammond organ?
Isn’t that a legal requirement?
Well how else can one play a triad on the pedals?
You guys still have clothes?
@@jonaseggen2230Are there clothes issued?
Happens all the time at music stores. Drives me nuts. I always appreciate the person who noodles about with something they invented on the spot.
Me: bro that's literally like playing stairway in guitar center, have some class!!!
also me: incessantly playing Little Wing any time a guitar is in my hands....
Totally!
No stairway, denied!
Well first of all, a Mellotron isn't a synth so it doesn't count.
And B, I always play "Watcher of the Skies."
In the Court of the Crimson King.
@@acousvnt That comes next 😉
Sure it is…it’s an analog sampler.
That's like asking guitarists to stop playing shitty versions of Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn
I have been watching your videos since about 2007. I remember getting really stoned one day and being really into Motion City soundtrack, and zoning out on one of your Moog synthesizer demo videos. Thank you sir.
Thank you!
bro that ending 😂 but seriously how could resist
But seriously, you can't have a mellotron and not play Strawberry.
You mean: Watcher of the Skies? ;)
Let’s all not forget about The Final Countdown (Aauugghh!)
jump and axel-f are immortal, but we could always use more terminator 1 soundtrack too 😂
OK, I have to confess: I bought GForce's DMX plugin mainly so I could imitate Blue Monday. Now I'll have to do a penance.
I want to play that so bad. And I did.
Ha! On point Mark and funny 😂 I can’t stand hearing jump anyone grabs OB-anything (I bet it was a reason for me not to even consider it). EVERYTIME I turn my Buchla, I think what’s wrong with me? Why am I playing 208C for music and not for blips and blobs like “normal people” do? 🎉
I need a CS-80 for playing Bladerunner.....mmmh, maybe the result sounds like Wonderful Christmastime
YESSS
now, that was funny!
I've just remoted myself from synthesizers after watching this 😎
But my hands know how to do that stuff so well... .that fragments of schmaltz sound fantastic as fodder for granular oscillators
My great grandma's maiden name was Doty. Pretty sure we're cousins bro.
Opens preset patch and plays Van Halen's Jump.
I’ve heard it said that all Dotys are related!
😂 you are so right!! I am looking forward to creating new stuff on my teo 5. Probably because of my lack of musical training. But also my love of 50’s 60’s sci fi. ❤ and just the sound of oscillators beating.
I love JUMP! I love AXEL-F!
Right on!!✊✊thank you for your voice!!
I see synths turning into guitars and im not into it. Guitar players have a roadmap; get lessons, practice covering other people’s music etc.
synthesists have to form their own style over years of learning and lots of isolation, I think the lack of community kept it special. The guitar route is essentially creative conformity (tell me what to do), synths have always been the opposite. Im pretty sure the “content” and “ affiliate” world might be at fault.
That's a really interesting observation/ thought (no sarcasm); there may be some truth in that.
I played guitar before I got into synths, but once I got into the latter - let's just say I wasn't too interested in playing guitar, haha. One thing that grinds my gears is how so often it seems like everything has to be some kind of guitar/ rock music.
"Oh, this is an *industrial act/band*? Cool! Oh, wait, it's "industrial metal"/"industrial rock."" -_- That's something that's happened to me a good number of times once I actually listen. I think sometimes even when it's labeled "electro-industrial." It's kinda a separate, but related thing. And people act like "industrial rock/metal" IS industrial, full stop. Because that's more popular. Even though it often isn't very "industrial."
Or just in general, it seems like "Oh, we can't just use electronic instruments - we HAVE to have some conventional rock instruments." There are many exceptions, but I think you get what I mean.
😂😂 MARC WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!! LOL. that was great. But hey, Marc Doty. I know you as a synthesizer historian from the Internet and also someone I love hanging out with. I have a great idea for a collab. We do an Axel F/Jump/Sweet Dreams mashup with a hint of Strawberry Fields/Stairway to Heaven mellotron in the back. Then she can really yell at us.
Let’s DO IT!!!
Yup, it's the equivalent of a creative mastermind suggesting to play ''Enter Sandman'' in a rock coverband.
John Castello is a cliche machine😂
who?
@@dankeplace John the loser synthpunk guy.
@@bangmateo7481 yeah that's why I said "who"
Just think of the Bleeps, bloops and blorps just waiting to be discovered !
Great Video! I too have been guilty of the strawberry when G-Media M-Tron 1st came out. I felt like I was a beetle
Having worked in a music store I rarely heard strawberry, but I would hear Chopin quite a lot!
People who ask can a new Oberhiem do "Jump", yeah nah, not why I buy a synth, I could care less about doing covers, more so making my own original music.
Thx for the wise words Marc.
Dear Marc, when do you have the new ARTURIA PolyBrute 12 under your fingers? Warm regards Andreas
Love it! Wisdom.
Ha ha, thank you, sir!
I was afraid you were going to tell mw to start using the black keys instead of just the white ones.
I'm soon going to make multisamples of a handful of my favorite Mellotron voices, on my 1010music Blackbox. Not so I can play Strawberry Fields, however. . 😄
Well, people buy an Oberheim because they want "that Oberheim sound". For that same reason, I didn't buy a C15 because "I don't want to sound like Hans Zimmer all the time". I like narly, mean sounds which is why I go for weirder synths. Like the Poly Evolver, the Norand Mono, the Kijimi or the Xaudio Beats FM. Why did YOU buy that Mellotron?
For doing that is to stop play pop music , the cliché is not the instrument but the kind of « music »
How embarrassing that people typecast and stereotype even our machines
Shaky hands+anxious breathing for absolute comedy value.
Although I totally get your point, I've always taken these classic synths with famous licks as a jumping off point. But yeah, it's all marketing. Who doesn't want to own a bit of the Beatles or Van Halen or Enya (here's looking at you, D-50!)
What does Mr. Filter sweep think about this?
no one cares but a few trolls.
@@dankeplace oooooooooo. I’m telling Mr. Filtersweep
@@nalaeel219 you go right ahead, I am sure it will affect him and he will sue YT.
It’s because the bar is now so low synths have taken the place of the home organ.
Oooh, harsh but true!
Perfection lol
a juno is just made for wide padsounds with chorus, nothing else please
Please don’t outlaw the blade runner riff…I need to play it on every synth…must play it…every…time…
lol, knew something was coming...nice. My favorite use of Mellotron, probably this classic from way back...and one of the darkest guitar tones you'll ever hear on a "rock" record. Almost like Pat Metheny would use later on...

Legit shocked the words "Blade Runner" did not appear in this video.
Weirdly, despite being from the time of Blade Runner, the time of that theme being a performance cliche is after me!
@@automaticgainsay I certainly have never used a Mopho of all things to put a Blade Runner song in the middle of my Soundcloud. Cliches are for clichistes, I always say.
Bitegoatie, synth insultant.
🤣🤣🤣
People always add background music to their clips. They probably think we haven't heard music before.
I’m sure I don’t know what you’re referring to
just a crosstalk from another video.
...uhm. This is the most pretentious, gatekeeper stuff I've ever seen. Keep on feeling self righteous and superior to us mere lowlifes.
How do you say “I didn’t watch far enough” without saying “I didn’t watch far enough?”
Also: you got the smell of “Axel F” all over in ya
This idea is futile! It will never happen in this country since the arts are so dumbed down. I wish tho
😂
You're only speaking for America. Anime makes much better use of synthesizers, and Metroid Prime is basically all I think about when I hear Moogs.
