Great review Hobbiton, I've smoked dozens of different tobaccos from OTC codgers to boutique English blends etc. Half and Half is the only tobacco that I just live everything about, I used to look down on the old codger blends but when I tried H&H I was hooked from first smoke!
Tasting notes I sometimes think of sour candied cranberry, maybe dried green apples,, slightly minty and light Vanilla, pitch from freshly cut fir trees , possibly anise, sweet livestock feed or hay type etc.
This Tobacco is fascinating to me, it seems to taste and smell like what you think at the time and a complete mystery.
Ever since I found H&H this is the only tobacco I smoke anymore and I love how it ghosts a briar pipe and each time you smoke it the flavor keeps getting better over time, like a seasoned teapot or something.
Keep up the great work you have the best tobacco reviews!

Hey Kevin, good to see your video. I keep thinking about getting a pouch just to actually try it. I've heard that there can be a taste difference between a pouch and a tub of this. I don't know why that would be. I'm smoking some G H Rum Flake at the moment in a Nording. But I really love hearing those birds. It's a nice 54 degrees here today. I'm loving it. I got outside for a bit. You have a good one my friend and catch you next time.

    • @hobbitonpiper
      @hobbitonpiper  2 года назад +1

Some prefer the pouches, others prefer the tubs. Levels of Propylene Glycol (a humectant used to keep tobacco moist) may be more noticeable when comparing a pouch with a tub and it may effect the flavor. Regardless, many prefer the nostalgia and feel of a tobacco pouch in hand. PG can go away over time however as the tobacco dries, so in theory I would think if you compared a bowl from a pouch with a bowl from a tub of equal moisture levels that the experience would be very similar. That being said, I enjoy drinking beer from a bottle over a can…same beer, but a slightly different flavor experience to me…try both ways and see what you prefer! :)

Back when I first started my pipe journey about 20 years ago, this was my go-to. I guess because it was only one of about four tobaccos carried locally. My first stint into the pipe hobby only lasted a couple years. But I was faithful to H&H throughout. It was only a couple years ago that I picked-up the pipe again and I went right back to the H&H for my first bowl. It was like reuniting with an old friend. I still really like the blend and even with access to so many other blends, I still regularly visit with my faithful old friend.
Another great review Kevin. I always enjoy your offerings.

I bought a corncob pipe and have purchased tobacco including Cult Blood Red Moon, Stanwell Melange and Sir Walter Raleigh. Which of the three would you recommend trying first? TY.

I think you hit on the aspect for me that I have a hard time with and that is artificial. I think the note and taste departs too much from tobacco.

Kevin, thank you for sharing this with us. My first impression with Half and Half was not favorable, at all. But like it is with many blends, for me, I kept at it; I had to give it a fair chance. So one day I stuffed some Half and Half in an old cob while working in the garage, and it blew my socks off. It was the first time I experienced that "ultimate smoke" that we all seek. Ever since then I was hooked. I now own more Half and Half than any other blend, followed closely by Presbyterian Mixture. Although this new Half and Half bears little (or no) resemblance to its older versions, I keep reaching for it. The funny thing is, I do not care much for aromatic tobaccos, but this is unarguably an aromatic blend.
Have you by chance tried the old/original version?
Thank you again for sharing, all the best.

Hey Kevin!! Great video brother!! I happen to enjoy Half and Half, even though today’s blend bears no resemblance to the original. I have had the pleasure of smoking 1920s vintage H&H and actually did a video review with Matches860 (R.I.P.). The original blend was flavored with Tonquin Bean, which has since been outlawed as a food and tobacco flavoring reportedly due to its cancer causing toxicity. The original stuff is one of a kind. I also detect a hint of anise in today’s version, although the Artful Codger has disagreed with me vehemently!!😂. Back in the late 1980s the plant had a mishap in the blending of H&H and a whole lot of it went to retail and caused quite a brouhaha. The company ended up recalling as much as they could and offered anyone that had a can or pouch of the bad stuff a full refund or a replacement. A very close departed friend of mine was a victim of the boo boo and they sent him a replacement can along with a free can. He smoked a 14 oz can every two weeks!!! Anyway, thanks for the great review!!! All the very best!!!

You are right about the deer tongue, Kevin. The old (original) Half and Half did include deer tongue. That may have been why many of the 'old codgers' didn't take to the blend. Being a pipe smoker that began 'in the day' (1970s) that would have included me. The flavor profile was weird 😉and the aroma was as well. Speaking of which, 'in the day' Half and Half was marketed as pipe and cigarette tobacco. In fact, American Tobacco introduced the Lucky Strike/Buckingham tobacco blend in 1909 as 'canned' tobacco and in cigarette form as Lucky Strike. The Lucky Strike logo was replaced in 1939 with the Half and Half logo. Coming back to 'in the day', Half and Half cigarettes enjoyed considerable popularity for years and many of us were more likely to associate the aroma of the blend with cigarette smoke. It's one of those embedded associations that can influence your like or dislike of something more or less permanently. It's fascinating and interesting to hear you tease all of the flavor characteristics out of the blend as you smoke it. That is something that the lifetime Half and Half pipe smokers would never have done. It was, as you pointed out, a tobacco that you loaded into your pipe and smoked without giving it a second thought. It was just what you did while you were doing something else. Be well, my friend, and keep it awesome - peace

Last night I was enjoying some Prince Albert out of my corn cob pipe. It’s really difficult for me to detect those nuances unless they hit me square in the face. Like the different between an aromatic and English blend. I have no problem with detecting it in the tin note, but not the actual smoke. Thanks for another great video.

I really enjoy PA! Yeah detecting flavor nuances is a skill that’s difficult for many to develop, but that shouldn’t take away from the relaxation that the pipe brings. Detecting flavor nuances in wine and whiskey is very difficult for many as well. Everyone should just find what they enjoy for whatever reasons they enjoy it and load it up! :)

Sitting here going through all of your codger and over the counter blends. Prince Albert, Carter Hall, Captain Black, Sir Walter, and Half and Half. So far, Half and Half is my favorite. The smoke is so subtly sweet to me, perfect after a meal. I mostly smoke aromatics, and mostly smoke cobs. Maybe I'm a cheap date, but if all I could smoke was Half and Half out of a Country Gentleman for the rest of my life, I'd be good with that.

I got a pouch of this today and it's a wonderful surprise. Has much more flavor than I expected for a codger, well compared to the SWR and Carter Hall. I found the Carter Hall to be a bit mild by itself but mixed with RLP-6 it's faaaaaaaaantastic, maybe one of the best smokes I've had so far with my limited selection. I'm planning on visiting a real pipe shop about 30 minutes away sometime to get some non aromatics, or maybe ordering bulk C&D, but so far my OTC/headshop bulk adventure has been quite fun.

Second time visiting H&H … first time I didn’t care for it. Fast forward 2 years and when I smelled it I did say to myself, “self, that is sweet and sour.” When you said cranberries the light bulb turned on. Great analogy. Also, I like watching your reviews with the same tobacco, I feel like it helps me pull the flavors out that you’re describing. Also, H&H has been my only codger blend. I should try the others…

Great video and like the codger blend reviews. Dad said back in the 60-70's they were Carters, Captain Black Original, Amphora (some will disagree with this one), and Sir Walter Raleigh. This afternoon I picked up some mason jars from the local store. I got 12 pint jars and then I got two 16 ounce jars. I had two 12 ounce cans of codger blend tobacco, some sir Walter Raleigh and some half-and-half. I filled up those Big jars with those two blends and I’m enjoying some half and half right now. I’ve had a few pouches of it before and it is honestly one of my favorite tobaccos. The flavor is so unique and I find it really refreshing in between all the other more expensive ‘craft’ tobaccos.
