Your efforts to step up the complexity of your video editing may be a work in progress, but your suggestions for curriculum building are pure gold! This is really valuable information! I can see myself watching this one repeatedly to take it all in.

    Are B1, B2, C1 and C2 students regarding languages besides english rare on Italki?

  • @norabalogh5910
    @norabalogh5910 3 года назад +3

    I’m a student on italki rather than a teacher, but I’ve taken hundreds of lessons, mostly in my four main other languages of French, Spanish, German and Hungarian and I was very curious about the teacher’s perspective!
    I find it fascinating that the assumption here is that the teacher plans the lessons. That’s not how I do it!!!!! It’s central to my philosophy of language learning that I’m in charge of my own learning process. I plan my lessons and ask the teacher to help me in carrying out my plan. For example, in my more advanced languages (French, Spanish and German, which are all in C2 territory), I might select an article that I found very interesting and translate it into my target language, getting my teacher to correct it during the lesson… and also commenting on it and discussing the ideas in it. Or I might summarize a documentary film that I viewed online, picking out certain pieces to view together and discuss. The vast majority of the time I select the topics, though I have occasionally asked for suggestions of films, books, series etc… from my teachers.
    In my beginner language, Hungarian, where I’m currently at the A2 level, I initially asked a professional teacher to suggest a resource and he suggested the MagyarOK series, which very much resembles the types of books they use at the Goethe Institute for learning German….a combination of grammar and communication exercises. I ordered the book and workbook and have been working my way through for the past few months. I work on my own, also using a grammar reference, online dictionaries etc… but record any questions I might have as well as preparing all verbal and written communication exercises to work on together during the class.
    And even in this beginner language, I also believe in finding additional fun resources, like simplified stories to read and listen to, so it’s not all overly serious.
    I never book a class that I haven’t planned and prepared. I can’t imagine doing it any other way!!!! You can also do the same exercise with more than one teacher to get additional practice.

      Thanks for sharing Nora. I’d say you’re a « rare breed », kind of like myself.
      None of my teachers ever planned lessons. In fact, at one point I got so motivated I began twisting their arms to do activities I wanted to do, to the point that I was pretty much planning the lessons, as the student. That’s what it sounds like you have done. Most tutors are cool with that.
      As a professional teacher, after 400 students, I haven’t had a single student like that. All of my students either expect me to plan the lesson - as I explain in this video - or they want unstructured conversation.
      Bottom line: iTalki is different for everyone - teachers and students alike - but in order to be successful as a teacher, it’s important to be flexible and versatile. Developing a curriculum could help with this.
      Again, thanks for your input. I love getting a student’s perspective. 😃

    Ryan, have you ever gone through a situation where both student and teacher showed up, but the student claimed that there was a problem and wanted for rescheduling the lesson (a trial lesson)? According to iTalki policy, if I refuse, I will have to contact iTalki within three days to explain what happened. I've been teaching on iTalki for two months and that is the perfect time it happened. Could you talk about it?

    • @EnglishTeacherRyan
      @EnglishTeacherRyan  3 года назад +1

      Hey Pedro,
      Thanks for the question. Luckily for me, this hasn't happened, but it sounds like the mother of all iTalki scams, assuming that the student did this on purpose.
      I'm so sorry about your luck. If I were you, I would dispute it, and just send iTalki some screenshots of the chat to prove that the lesson did in fact happen. This is why I always keep screenshots.
      Hopefully it was simply a mistake on behalf of the student. Besides, iTalki typically takes the teacher's side in dispute. At least, I've always been successful with disputes.
      Best of luck, Pedro!
