Another great Metallica reaction...thank you. As others have mentioned, "Fade to Black" should be high on your list to do next. And ignore anyone who says to do a live version before you've heard the studio version.
Metallica was like an underground band. Everyone had heard of and listened to. This was their first video on MTV. It was a watershed moment in music. Great video. Great song.
When this first came around my way the general reaction was what is the crap. Then the video came out and everyone was OMG is THAT what this song is about.
Great and honest reaction. I have been a fan of the band since the late 80''s and watched many reactions to this particular song. It is always emotional. I myself cry almost everytime. I think the combination of tender musical moments with heavy moments and the heartbreaking subject matter combine for a very unique experience. The video footage is from the Movie "Johnny Got His Gun," which I think is intertwined masterfully with the music. I look forward to more reactions!
The song is partially about the singers (James Hetfield) childhood, his Dad left and his Mom died so it was him and his brother, his brother was reading a book about a mentally ill person feeling trapped in his body, so One is about guy the almost died in a war, as mentioned in the song “Landmine has taken my sight taken my speech taken my hearing taken my arms taken my legs left me with life in hell” so the song is talking about person trapped in his body wanting to die.
It wasn't a mentally ill person but a solider hit by an artillery shell. They changed it to a landmine in the song. James related to johnny because both of them were unable to communicate with others.
The dichotomy of emotions you are experiencing are normal with this music. The joy you are feeling toward the music itself is exactly what all of us who are fans experienced the first time we heard Metallica almost 40 years ago. No one had ever done anything like this before, and none of us had heard anything like it...it literally blew our minds hearing something like this for the first time. Speaking for myself, I had the barest understanding of the content of the songs until I had heard them multiple times and starting matching the music to the theme, and despite the melancholic nature of the content, it only made me appreciate the music itself that much more. Welcome to a journey that many of us have been on for a lot of years...and welcome to the genius that is Metallica.
Great reaction, thanks for posting! When I was a kid, I liked this song just because I thought it sounded cool. Now that I'm grown up, I can barely watch this video without choking up. It's an amazingly powerful song and tells the story of the horrors of war so well.
The fact that the song became more aggressive and built up matched the level of despair and anger and desperation he was feeling. Also, you'll notice a few times that the rapid drum beats were made to sound like machine guns to imitate the war time feel.
Nice, Jess! This is a powerful song, both in meaning and imagery of the video, to the dueling guitars. I echo other commentary, suggesting Fade To Black...but I recommend checking out a more recent, live version, bc this band has aged very well and they play like a machine of magic sound! And the guitarwork sounds almost like classical music... you'll like it!
The scenes in this video are from the 1970's movie, "Johnny Got His Gun" and the associated book, originally written in 1938. James Hetfield was inspired to write this song after seeing the film. Johnny was a soldier in World War One. He is caught in an explosion that leaves him with no arms, no legs, no face, no ears. He cannot speak, hear, or see - has no sense of time or where he is, and is fed through a tube and breathing through a respirator. I have always interpreted the cut scenes within the song as what is happening to Johnny in the real world. The moments of the song where Johnny is "thinking out loud" are his conscious mind, and James Hetfields voice is his subconscious mind. This was triggered - for me - by Johnny's thought, "I don't know if I'm alive and dreaming, or dead and remembering?" From that point on, the music builds and builds, which - again, to me - signaled the growing conflict between the two sides of Johnny's mind as he dips further and further into insanity. By the time Kirk Hammett's guitar solo hits, (and hits hard), I've always pictured that as the final "battle" between Johnny's conscious and subconscious mind, with the final "S.O.S. Help me..." mantra at the conclusion signifying that Johnny's mind is the same as his body, reduced to "one" singular, autonomic thought. Nothing else of him remains from that point forward. Johnny has gone, and only the breathing corpse remains until he would die of old age. At the end, the crowd singing "Keep the Home Fires Burning" symbolizes how society went on and forgot about him, (and the veterans in general). If you listen to this song from that perspective, you will be bawling by the end.
H Jess... once again, a brilliant reaction to a brilliant song by a brilliant band... I never watched a reaction video to a Metallica song, getting someone so emotional, like you. Yup, this is another brutal song of theirs, mixing the most tragic, horrific, heart-wrenching subject matter with some of the best classic heavy metal music you could ever hope for. So well written. These songs of theirs, IMO, are good for you. They build character, make you think, draw out your "emotional muscles" and the sound hits you over the head with killer guitars and drums. Music like this does a great job of explaining the reality of metal-heads. They (including younger me) tend to dress like brutal thugs, yet they're usually very happy to help others, and welcome anyone without judgment. Menacing at the surface level, yet introspective and empathic under the surface.

Don't think of the emotions as conflicting. One of the main purposes of metal - as opposed to most other popular genres of music - is catharsis. That is to say, be dealing with the ugly, tough, hard, grim and gruesome stuff in a way that allows you to get all those emotions out. So lets form a crowd and do it together at a concert. That's why metal music is a party, even though the lyrics are the exact opposite. You get relief of all those feelings, and that is by definition positive! That is why metal music about negative stuff is a positive thing! Rock on🤘🏼
Give "Orion" a try!! Talk about an emotional experience and a spiritual journey! It's an 8 min. Instrumental that you never want to end! Cliff Burton was like the Beethoven of Metal! He was very schooled in all types of music! To bad they lost their best member! RIP Cliff
Hey Jess! 🤘 You're right. The subject matter of the song is a nightmare. I always get a bit thrown off when I see the video for this song. The inclusion of the spoken bits and other movie sounds aren't on the official song. "...And Justice for All", which this song was on, was their 4th album, first with then-new bassist Jason Newsted after Cliff Burton's death. Unfortunately, drummer Lars Ulrich kept telling the engineer "turn the bass down a little...a little more... a little more..." to the point where it became known as "The album with no bass". Despite that, I still love the album. The title track is my favorite from it but it's all good. If I can put in a music suggestion since you've done a couple Metallica ones. Megadeth. Frontman Dave Mustaine was the original lead guitarist for Metallica but was kicked out shortly before they recorded their first album. A lot of their early songs have him credited as co-writer. If you haven't heard Megadeth, "Peace Sells" and "Symphony of Destruction" are their most well-known, but "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due" is most fans' favorite, me included. A masterpiece song that starts off a masterpiece album, "Rust in Peace'.

First: I love this song Second: I saw the movie (because of this song) and it's great. But especially when it comes to a reaction to this song, I think this video is the wrong choice. There are too many impressions and the actual experience of the song is disturbed (destroyed). I would have liked a reaction to the studio version, preferably with the lyrics. But of course it's not your fault, how would you know? Still a great song from the time when Metallica was the best band in the world for me.
Hey! Yep I had requests for both versions and honestly, I think I chose wrong. The visuals were disturbing but distracting from the depth of the lyrics. Oh well, I’ll listen to it again in my own time and I’m sure I’ll cry like a baby.
@@inbedwithmusic2130 As I said, it's not your fault. It's more up to those who suggest it. ;) The lyrics are tough enough, if you then see the pictures it can be hart. But the audio clips from the movie ultimately screw up the song. Is my opinion.
Great reaction to an epic song, I really enjoyed it. I highly recommend a reaction to Orion by Metallica. If you do so, do some research on the band and the Master Of Puppets album so you can understand the true meaning of that song. Fair warning it might make you feel a bit emotional as well.
@@inbedwithmusic2130 Naw, they have many songs that arr really great and top tier. Master of Puppets and One are just two of their most popular and are huge staples in the metal community. These are songs that put Metallica above and ahead of many of the other thrash bands, very big, grand sounding, interesting arrangements and thoughtful lyrics. Thanks Paul. I heard a female cover of the song maybe 10 years ago. Didn’t realise it was a Metallica song until yesterday 😅 I might still listen to the original as I haven’t heard it (or heard longer than 1minute of the cover).

Plenty more to come, any suggestions?

One might be thier best song
Oh don’t say that, I’d hate to have watched their two best songs straight away and then nothing else compares 🫣
They have other great ones but these are among the best
You're so sweet. 😢
This is their last high speed thrash album.
THIS ISA POWER SONG
It sure is!
If u want to feel a bit more uplifted, try Enter Sandman- live in Moscow 91
I think you would like Metallica. Nothing else matters.
Thanks Paul. I heard a female cover of the song maybe 10 years ago. Didn’t realise it was a Metallica song until yesterday 😅 I might still listen to the original as I haven’t heard it (or heard longer than 1minute of the cover).
❤❤
❤️❤️
I think this song done her in. No Metallica after this one. I guess it's 'Fade to Black'
Not a fan really of people watching the video accompanied with the song....They are horrified by the movie and the visual aspect of it and not really hearing the song. I know i am bitching lol....just stating my opinion. Glad you watched the video!
I totally agree! I wish I had just watched a lyric video.
No. The video is a must for a first listen. First time listeners just need a little context before trying to take it all in.
@@RegurgiNate84 Would agree if the lyrics were the focal point in someone's opinion of a song. But when the instruments get turned down in order to hear a movie....you're watching the movie and not hearing the song in whole.
Looks like you havent been doing vids in awhile, when you return check out Metallica's Fade to Black studio version with Lyrics
Metallica Rules. Want a fast pace heavy song go with Dyers Eve. Rock on Down Under

When you say " The one's who" you are referring to all MEN. Brothes and fathers that have kept this trauma or have ended when they came back to a country and a life they once knew. Just think of this. There is no one that cares to here there story. There is no clinic for mental health for men. Only ungrateful wemon they have died for and or suffered this trama.
Mate, I’m nothing but respectful to those who sacrifice for us so please don’t lump all women into the same basket.
@@inbedwithmusic2130 Not all. Most. Definitely not you. Just raising awareness to all the women so that they know men struggle more than the portrayal on the media and news.
