Fire Island is a movie people will still be watching 40 years from now. I've seen multiple reviews call it an "instant classic" and I think that is accurate. The movie to compare it to is Clueless. It's hilarious, romantic... Seriously this movie is everything you would want from the premise. Everything in this movie just works and after watching this interview I understand way more about how that happened.
wow! I gotta say, none of the interviews or clips I've seen so far have convinced me as much as your comment! now I really am way more interested to see it
A forgettable so, so adaptation of Jane Austen's P&P only if one likes to see multi-ethnic men/gurls in speedos. A humorless, threadbare rehash of film stereotypes and meme tropes. The only notable character to look for is Legacies actor and busy rising star, Zane Phillips.
I loved Fire Island and I love him and Bowen! I put it on as background while I was working from home…and let’s just say that backfired on me. Lol at least work wise! I can’t wait to watch it on repeat!
As a baby boomer lesbian, I spent many a summer in the 1980’s and early 90’s in the Pines and Cherry Grove. It was hard to watch how AIDS decimated an entire generation of Gay men, (and many of my dear and closet friends) and how the “our safe haven” was directly impacted on Fire Island. I’m so gratified to hear that some thirty years later, these two “ enclaves of fabulousness” are back and in full swing!!! Can’t wait to see this film! Happy Pride Y’all!!!! 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈
This was a good interview, I'm glad he's doing so well. Back in the 80s I was a DJ and Light-man at the Pavilion, the main club in the Pines. Fire Island is a magical place that's difficult to describe in words. 🏳🌈
Phenomenal interview, and a great film too! I’m so glad that conversations about authentic AAPI and LGBT representation can take place on mainstream programming.
I tried Fire Island the day it came out, because I love Bowen on SNL. I got hooked on all the story lines. Always wanted to see the real Fire Island. It's beautiful. Enjoy!
Wow! Is he a great guest, or what? Clearly he has something he wants to say to the rest of us and knows what it is. His stand-up experience has stood him in good stead. Oh, and he's gorgeous.
sometimes, a guest's experience will remind me of a personal experience (though on a much smaller scale). In College, older than my fellow students by around a decade, having found my path later than expected, I directed a play for which I was also the lighting designer, and prop master. An excruciating, difficult, high pressure senior project that brought me extreme personal satisfaction when the product was fantastic and well received. It is maybe a micro version of Joel's experience as writer/producer/star of such a wonderful product. Memory of my joy makes me so happy for his!
I watched the movie before I saw this, it took me about 45 minutes into the movie before I realized, OMG, this is Queer Pride and Prejudice, it totally thrilled me. And seeing him mention his love of the BBC version and the 2005. How completely brilliant. Jane would have loved the 'Fire Island' homage.
As a straight person (Bowen Yang fan) I HOPE that the audience isn't restricted to the LGBTQ audience. It's really funny, charming and informative about the gay community (occasionally TMI!) Love is love -- Romance is romance. And good for Colbert for celebrating Pride in such a concrete fashion.
Exactly. This is why queer people need their spaces. I don't think non-queer people fully understand that even in places where queer people are more accepted, we always have our antennae on scan for what feels safe or not. This is why sometimes I go to gay weekend events where I know that everyone around me understands me and I can let my guard down and so can they. I also liked the movie Fire Island a lot. If you haven't seen it, give it 20 minutes because the setup to the movie isn't nearly as good as the rest of it.
He had me at Gay Pride & Prejudice. I've been meaning to watch it because of Bowen, but he is so freaking charming! Also, re: Fire Island, I had no idea about this lovely place. I've visited Provincetown, and loved it, so I'm sure that this post of the island is wonderful.
I thought it's gonna be a politics-heavy overdone gay movie. It's not. It's a hearty rom com with some really vulnerable and laugh-out-loud scenes. Great casting! Great actors! Yang and Kim-Booster really shined!
So excellent!!!! Joel did such an incredible job on the movie, it truly is a faithful adaptation. Class is such an important factor in both the book and the movie, but I also loved how he took the institution of marriage completely out of the plot and replaced it with something much more modern and queer: consensual non-monogamous sexual/romantic connections.
Just watched the movie today It was epic and epically hilarious and heartwarming and I cried at least twice This man is as talented as he is stunningly beautiful ❤️
😄 These two have _such_ good chemistry, together. Am I the only one who thinks it would be a good idea, at some point, to maybe bring this guy back to co-host an edition of _First Drafts?_
Fire Island is a wonderful place near the end of Long (125 miles approx.) Island. To get there, one must take a ferry, other boat, or a sea plane to get to this tip of the New York island. There are several different parts of the Island: There is a homosexual (gay) part, nudist part, heterosexual part, and family part (or parts). I had a half share in a house in Davis Park, a heterosexual part of the island, for one summer. Mostly, this island caters to different groups of people who rent a house for the summer (Memorial Day through Labor Day), and go there to have a fun day at the beach and each person renting a house creates a dinner for all the residents paying rent for the summer on a Saturday night, or may go out to eat at one of a few restaurants on different parts of the island, or one of the houses may have a party to which the renters on that particular part of the island may attend, or have a night together to play cards or other types of games. It’s a fun place for people with different outlooks get together on their part of the island to relax from the work grind of the week. Most people drive to the ferry and park their cars, take the boat ride on Friday night and return to drive home on Sunday night. The biggest drawback is driving on the Long Island Expressway with heavy traffic on the weekends in summer. If one can afford it, the best way to go is by seaplane, which lets you off in the water and walk a few feet to the sandy shore and walk to your house from there.
How have I never heard of him? He’s funny and well spoken. I love that he kept getting cast as a Chinese delivery boy, when he’s obviously Korean, lol.
@@lilzuplada1564 I don't know, I've seen at least 3 stand up comedy bits about how Asians can't tell specific Asians from other Asians: delivered by Asian comedians!
The band playing Britney Spears's "Sometimes" when Joel came out is a nice touch - the song plays a pretty big role in the film.
I noticed the song too.
Agree. And the version in the film is a fantastic cover of the song!
@@kmc7062 Absolutely! MUNA did the cover, and if you'd like to check it out, they just released their third studio album, which is fantastic!

it's neither hilarious nor romantic. The film portrays the usual stereotyped queer people of the 70teens. Simply awful.

Awwww you can see Colbert saying "That went well" or something of the like to Joel at the end.
My lip-ready sense thinks: "That was great, man!"

You are 101% definitely NOT straight!!💩
Just now??
As far as we've come as an accepting society, it still warms my heart so much to know that there are allies out there!!
Love it
What a great audience.! I could feel their appreciation of Joel's talent and genuineness.
This was a good interview, I'm glad he's doing so well.

It's exciting to see we've arrived at a place where we'd be spotlighting the ins and outs of Fire Island on national TV.
😂👌🏻
What an intelligent and articulate human.
he's smart and witty, funny, gorgeous and incredibly talented! Enjoyed the interview and the movie too!
Superstar! Can't wait to see where this project takes him. Thanks Steven for getting him the airtime he deserves.

He seems so smart and funny definitely gonna watch fire Island asap

I love how Stephen had a whole stack of cards but Joel killed it on the first one, so he ended it right there on a high note 😂
I think that Joels time was up and Stephen saw this joke as a good exit point. These games are often used as a time filler.
