This is so amazing to see PMS & HARVESTING this big now. I remember being on the ground floor when Todd first started w/3 trucks, 1 cutter & 1 packing tractor.

1st time me and my cousin were hired by a farmer who we had been hanging around his shop. The time to cut silage , he had a milk herd that mostly his was taking care of. He ran a fix it shop and bought a used dozer for packing and he asked a kid me if I could run it. Was honest I probably can but really be new for me. Build it high as you can don't get it wide and pack it all day. He would buy a dozer with some problems and the silage would clean it while getting the job done. Cousin ran a tractor pulling a wagon. 2 other farmers would help and we would help them. Dad didn't ask much about the job but was glad we had got a job.

Being hired for a job because he thought we could do it. He said to ask our dads and mine was like ok. Don't know if he had talked to him about the job but dad acted like it was fine.

Does anyone else remember when farmers used to grow vegetables? Growing up we could go by fields with anything from pickles to peppers, now corn for silage and soy beans. It's a rare sight to see a field of corn that is harvested for the for the ears of corn and not just chopped up. Bon Appetit!!!

We're do you live? I'm Michigan we raise field corn, soy beans, black bean, white beans, Lima beans, etc etc on the dry beans. Seen a farmer this year planting green beans we had to stop and watch the harvest because this isn't something we do on our farm. We also plant sugar beets, potatoes. And some areas grow lots of carrots. Your vegetables can't be grown in any old soil so that is why we don't do vegetables. Dry beans, corn and sugar beets are very common for our type of ground. Lots of farmers grow sweet corn and sell at road side stands but that isn't how they make a living it's only pocket money .

I have never seen a fresh grown pickle. What does the plant look like?
Been in farming one way or another from the 70
Where does the frozen ears of corn come from, and can corn if it is all be chopped up for feed. And here (Texas) we have fresh corn in the stores most of the warm months.
That farm is raising their silage for their livestock, as not having to buy it. They are at their TX panhandle location, that is a dairy farm. (milk factory)

I dairy farm with my parents we have 120 milk cows and raise our own heifers. We run a 4455jd on a 900 NH 3 row head. We put up 8 or 9, 9×200 bags every year plus a few bags of haylage and rye. Dad chops, and I do all the hauling. It wouldn't work for us to pile it because it would take more people. It usually takes us 10 or 12 days to get corn all chopped.

When I was young silage for the most part was stored in silos. There were some farms that had pit silos but the larger farms had Harvestore silos they controlled the fermentation best. I remember how that smelled.

I work in an industry similar to this, but with ranches instead of farms. And more often than not, unfortunately, it's usually the farmer/rancher that gives up the farm willingly. Health reasons, kids aren't interested in taking it over or they don't have kids at all, taxes, environmental factors, there's a pile of reasons large companies take over small family farms. And it's generally mutual.
